runs good on steam deck, very good and underrated. don't follow the hate train and form your own opinion
movement is horrendous, defensive mechanics are lacking and stiff, combos are limited and boring. enemies are either stupidly easy or gimmickly harder without much depth. Not worth even on sale.

Overall, this game is very polarizing, but then again, it wouldn't be a Double Dragon game otherwise. I have to admit that I went into Double Dragon Revive with a lot of apprehension... especially because it came after the masterpiece that is DD Gaiden. However, despite what a lot of the gaming community would have me believe, I found a very fun albeit ambitious game. Double Dragon Revive has a lot going for it, and will please many fans of the franchise. Of course it features the titular heroes, Billy and Jimmy Lee - both in their respective colors of blue and red, who each have their own move-sets, specials, and play styles. This helps add to the replay value when you go back into the game after beating it for the first time. (You will also have a fun time chasing down all of the achievements in the game after completing it too!) In addition to the Lee brothers, Revive also lets you play as Marian (no longer the damsel in distress) and Yagyu Ranzo, from Double Dragon III. Both of these characters are great additions to the roster and play very differently from one another. Plus, while the story is admittedly a bit silly, Revive gives some good background to Marian and Ranzo, making them actual established characters within the DD lore. As far as the graphics go, I actually like the style this game employs. I have read plenty of complaints about the design of the characters and the stages, but I think they all look great (maybe with the exception of Abobo who just looks too plain) and the stages have some great details littered throughout that help build the world and make it feel more believable. I also really like the sound design as well. Voices, sound effects, and the remixes of classic Double Dragon tunes all sound great. Now, I said this game was ambitious because the gameplay has a lot to offer in terms of moves, combos, environmental gimmicks, and strategy, but fails to really come through on all of it. Now, don't get me wrong, as of this review I am still having a blast with Revive, yet I get the feeling that it could be so much more with just a little more time in the oven. Indeed, the biggest thing this game has going against it is its length. Each stage is unique from the last and offer cool gimmicks within the scenery, but they are over much too quickly. Additionally, while the characters all feature exciting move sets and specials, the implementation feels a tad clunky in certain areas. It is exhilarating connecting a bunch of moves into a massive combo - topped off by a flashy super, but the three-dimensional movement seems off, which makes these moments more rare than they should be. The 3D movement affects jumping as well, making jump kicks a little wonky and unreliable. Other aspects to note are the block and dodge system, which are great to have, but are never really necessary throughout the game - even on higher difficulties. On the whole, I still recommend Double Dragon Revive - especially if you are a fan of the franchise. DD has seen its ups and downs throughout the years and I can confidently say that Revive is certainly in the upper category in comparison to many of DD's previous titles. If you are not as immersed in the world of DD, then I'd suggest waiting for a sale. Either way, I'm glad I added this game to my library. It may be short and a bit clunky at times, but I still have a lot of fun playing it - and that's really the whole point, right?
We've played over 40 hours of Double Dragon Gaiden, and balked at the price of this on local co-op. We were looking for a new fighting game, having nearly all of the local co-op beat-em-up's on steam. Myself, I found the 3D and camera hard to adjust to at the beginning, but I would say within the first hour of play - and both doing the tutorial, this is now our favorite game to play together. 100% recommended if you're into beat-em-up games with your partner on the couch. Happy wife, happy life.
