So, I really enjoyed this game and wanted to share what I think it does well and who it might appeal to. For context, I'm a massive Double Dragon fan. I own all the games, I even own the blurays for the movie and the animated series. I even like Double Dragon IV. And I think that's who this game will appeal to the most -- Double Dragon nerds. Fortunately, it does Double Dragon justice. It's essentially a remake of Double Dragon Advance. Like that game, it is a re-imagining of the original Double Dragon, while also adding in elements and enemies from Double Dragon II and Super/Return of Double Dragon -- making for a "best of" experience in one game. If you've played through Double Dragon Advance, then you already have a solid idea of what to expect here story and structure-wise. It has a lot of great references to the games I mentioned above, including musical callbacks, enemies, and boss fights that really land well for a "special" fan like me. What I also like about this game is that it's specifically paying homage to the earliest wave of arcade beat 'em up games. You know, the ones influenced by The Warriors (my favorite movie), with street gangs hanging out in subways and dark back alleys, packing chains, knives, whips, and ... pro wrestling moves, because Japan. That's my thing right there. Give me that all day every day. This game delivers that in spades. So, I think fans of the original Final Fight may also appreciate that. If I were to describe the gameplay, I feel it's a bit like a beat em up mixed with Virtua Fighter. By that I mean it's a 3D brawler with fairly simple controls, and a lot of the experience is trying to jungle and stagger enemies against walls and background objects. I think it's very solid, and I really enjoy it. I've also always had a soft spot for Virtua Fighter (mind you, don't come in to this game expecting that level of depth). I've also seen someone on Reddit (the other guy out there that actually admits to liking this game) aptly describe the gameplay as a bit like Punch-Out. Enemies all have specific weaknesses in their patterns that, when countered, lead to a huge and satisfying counter attack that sends them flying. It's like hitting Bald Bull at just the right time when he charges at you. It's really good stuff. What this game also really does well, that I don't think I've seen anyone give it credit for is boss fights! This game has some really good boss fights. There's a particularly epic fight with four classic Double Dragon enemies on a rooftop that just had me smiling the whole time. I also enjoyed the level design. There's some fun and creative scenarios in this game. I've seen people describe the game as "soulless" but when you actually try it, and play through some of the cool segments this game offers, you do see that some real care went into it. So, the only thing I'd maybe knock this game on is length. I got to the final stage pretty quickly and beat it. On the flip side, the characters you can unlock play VERY differently from Billy and Jimmy, so there's replay value there. It's quite a different experience flipping out with ninja teleportation and elemental attacks with Ranzo or busting out muay thai/kickboxing moves at lightspeed with Marian. So, if you're on the fence, I say give it a shot. Remember, a lot of people were dismissive of Double Dragon Gaiden due to how it looks, and that game turned out to be a modern classic. I wouldn't say this is a game with broad appeal, but for us Double Dragon fans, it's a surprisingly strong entry.
