I want to give this a mixed but I did have a good time with it overall. Took me 21 hours to beat the game on normal with all characters but I'm also kinda middling at beat em ups. I think the game is fine for what it is, heck it even entertained before it got annoying, but it's also a bit overpriced and pales in comparison to a lot of higher tier beat em ups that just make this game look bad both figuratively and literally. As a fun brainless punchfest I think its a good time but only on a sale or a price below its current asking price of $35 USD. Only get this on sale or as a very hardcore beat em up fiend that already played Absolom, Marvel Cosmic Invasion, Streets of Rage 4, TMNT Shredder's Revenge, Fight N Rage, River City Girls 1 & 2, Mayhem Brawler 1 & maybe 2 if it's out and priced nicely, and maybe Double Dragon Gaiden? Most should be cheaper and have a bit less jank but I have a soft spot for what it was trying for. Pros: Punching and Kicking feels good. The combat model is serviceable. Mechanics are serviceable and unique to this game. Provides online co op and online co op with Epic Games(Though it also asks to connect to the Epic Games Store which might be a con. It does ask and doesn't seem to be mandatory) Performance was okay. It stayed at a weird 62 FPS during gameplay but dipped to 30 or 40 during cutscenes. There is a story that's serviceable but also has a few plot holes and lacking payoff in a few areas. Computer System settings were okay. Characters have distinct uniqueness with each of their respective kits and varying degrees of depth but... Room for improvement: Art Style should've gone a bit more cell shaded, colorful, or cartoonish or at least had something a bit more eye catching. Cheaper asking price. This game's immediate competition do what it does while looking better, playing better and at a cheaper price. Game also could've used a bit more humor or whimsy. It took itself too seriously while having a story that failed to properly establish it's stakes. Spoilers for the story(stuff in the story that kinda annoyed me):
Note I'm bad at remembering nouns names and specifics so I tried Googling what I forgot and guessed at spelling some things. The kidnapping subplot didn't work the whole way through unless we can see the people that Billy, Jimmy and Marian are trying to protect. We should've gotten that one kid early on getting kidnapped or, their family or another person specifically introduced early that was kidnapped that motivated us to keep searching. Marian was that person but she became playable so the hostages' identities and status became nebulous as opposed to being something we're wary of or worried about. The Dragon Vein thing still doesn't quite make sense to me. Does it actually turn people into dragons? That seems to be what they're implying but the character models for the Dragonized people looked like guys in green masks. Also none of them were the kidnapped people which would've been an interesting twist. Also the Lees and Marian never discuss if what they're witnessing in the green people are the effects of the Dragon Vein experiments. And if they are, wouldn't Billy, Jimmy, Marian and Roland be turning into Dragons too? If Dragon Vein has a connection to the Sosetsuken style, why hasn't that been elaborated on? Why the heck is that dragon dude from the subways showing up to fight us? Is he a dragon naturally? Was he experimented on? Why didn't he come with us and why wasn't he playable? Ronzo Ninja guy is barely in the crew and he never elaborates on why his clan is charged with protecting the Dragon Vein or if they have any direct connection with the Sosetsuken Fighting Style. Why does he know of Dragon Vein? Does he know of Sosetsuken? Why did he not just travel with us? Why so underutilized? Why did Raymond trick Willie into doing unnecessary experiments with energies when he could've just simply confront the Lee brothers and Marian and fight them to assess their energies? Did Willie not have the ruins outfitted with surveillance tech to keep track of prisoners and intruders? How could he not notice our powers were clearly working? Or that Ronzo was freeing the prisoners, offscreen, allegedly... Why is Raymond saying that Sosetsuken and Gousetsuken use Yang and Yin energy when the ruins don't suppress Sosetsuken Yang energy implying they suppress Gousetsuken Yin energy when he's still fighting fine? Dude is just lying to everyone. Why is Billy the one who needs to leave to look for Marian's father when Marian should be the one to look for her dad? Why couldn't she initiate the journey? It's a small thing but it's kinda weird. Why? And why is Ronzo not joining them or at least going somewhere else? Is he sticking around? What's up with that guy?!
Cons: It seems to use 8 way directional movement that favors horizontal targeting leading to a lot of moments of frustration where you can't lead or target enemies into certain directions or can't move in certain directions. It's particularly frustrating trying to use environmental takedowns when you aren't the Lee siblings. It goes for platforming & level design that it doesn't have the control scheme, camera framing of action or game feel/movement to make it satisfying. Interactive elements are inconsistent. You can only jump off VERY specific walls or surfaces to the very left or right of the stage but not on the background or foreground. And even that is very dubious. There are a lot of enemy designs, mechanics, attacks, and environmental traps where you can't properly avoid damage or counter. You're kinda f***ed and its a bit frustrating. (Might be a skill issue of me rushing but some of this just feels clunky.) Heavy dudes that do the slow crosschop to your throat and you have to have very specific timing to stop them because of their supernatural range and weird timing. Half the time they hit you from across the room for no reason. Certain characters and bosses in later levels just have armor or invincibility on everything they do when they shouldn't need it. There are a lot of stage layouts that only utilize half the stage surface area and you have a lot less area to move around. Which gets really frustrating The game also goes out of its way to force the camera and stage walls to make backtracking or collecting weapons from prior areas that you were literally just in and are just offscreen impossible and very frustrating. Health is handled in the weirdest way. You have no pick ups You just get a large glut of health upon entering certain stages. It lacks personality for a game that has the problem of lacking personality. If you don't like Epic Games Store, this game will make you sad but I believe the Epic Game Store connection is optional. The game doesn't look the prettiest especially in comparison to its competition. I have too many cons and nitpicks to give it a clean recommend. If it's on sale for less $25 USD or less, particularly $20 and below, it might be worth a trial run if you've tried the games mentioned above and want something a bit less refined.
This game ain't it, chief. The movement feels sluggish, rigid, and imprecise. Hitboxes are all over the place. All actions are highly committed and leave you open to all kinds of cheap shots. Enemies are almost entirely cheap shots. Guarding is useless. Perfect dodges only work some of the time. Jumping attacks are annoyingly hard to land. The enemy can juggle you endlessly. The game relies heavily on environmental gimmicks for crowd control. Interrupting enemy special attacks is inconsistent, as is the method to do so (e.g. - you have no idea anti-air attacks can be used for this until you fail the third stage boss). Some attacks have i-frames, some don't. The game is inept at conveying this. Victories don't feel earned through clever, or skillful gameplay, but rather through cheap exploitation of AI limitations. The final boss is just a more ridiculous version of a common enemy. Even on easy the difficulty is brutal. Super Double Dragon is my favorite DD game to date. It was also a sluggish game full of cheap enemies and brutally difficult, but man oh man did it feel a LOT more fun to play than this game.
Simply put, it's not worth the price tag. Controls and hitboxes are a bit clunky, sometimes there are too many enemies that you lose track of where your character is. Character aiming for opponent isn't the best either.
If you ever wondered what 'Double Dragon 64' might've played like this is it. A complete misunderstanding of what made the original games good poorly implemented in an attempt to modernize. Controversial opinion, Double Dragon should stay 2D, Gaiden was awesome, following it up with this is pathetic. The story is also overdone just like the gameplay, the end of the first mission Marian reveals she let herself get captured 'on purpose' and she's actually a martial arts master too. I liked when Marian punched Skullmageddon, I tolerated it when she was a cop in Gaiden, but I'm really really done with the whole Marian is just as tough as Bimmy and Jimmy act. One of the most iconic shots in gaming history is Marian being carried off, yet every reboot the devs seem to try and apologize for it. Technically it's a mess, ugly post processing as far as the eye can see and I couldn't for the life of me get 60 frames per second. On the reboot note, I've lost count of how many reboots this makes for the franchise, even when they have a good thing going like with IV and Gaiden, time to reboot again. If you're gonna remake a game at least remake 3 lol. Double Dragon Advance is on steam and that's the best remake the OG version ever got. I recommend every single Double Dragon game on Steam over this one, including the Arcade compilations.
Underrated Gem – Double Dragon Revive Deserves More Love I went into Double Dragon Revive not expecting much, especially given the mixed reception—but honestly, I came away really impressed. This game is criminally underrated. At its core, it captures that classic Double Dragon feel: straightforward, satisfying beat-’em-up combat with a modern touch. The controls feel tight, the hits have weight, and there’s something genuinely fun about chaining combos and clearing out waves of enemies the old-school way. It doesn’t try to overcomplicate things, and that works in its favor. Visually, the game has a clean, stylized look that fits the series while still feeling updated. The environments and character designs aren’t groundbreaking, but they’re cohesive and give the game personality. The soundtrack also does a solid job of keeping the energy up during fights. What really stands out is how much better the game feels than people give it credit for. A lot of the criticism seems exaggerated—once you actually spend time with it, you realize there’s a lot of fun to be had here. It may not reinvent the genre, but it doesn’t need to. It delivers exactly what a Double Dragon game should: simple, satisfying brawling. Is it perfect? No. It could use more content and polish in certain areas, and I wouldn’t have complained about deeper mechanics or more variety. But none of that takes away from the fact that it’s a genuinely enjoyable experience. Bottom line: If you’re a fan of beat-’em-ups or grew up with Double Dragon, don’t sleep on this. It’s way better than its reputation suggests, and easily one of the most underrated titles in the genre right now.
DO NOT get ts full price cheep bosses, Janky hit boxs, high price tag, not much combo potential or clarity buy on sale. there is still fun to be had with a friend but hoooolyyyy
It's pretty fun with 2 players, but it's DOUBLE DRAGON. This title doesn't remind me of a series with nearly 40 years of history.
一个键盘一个手柄不能两人本地玩?
runs good on steam deck, very good and underrated. don't follow the hate train and form your own opinion
