The game is fun but its way overpriced, I played for about 4 hours and theres already nothing more to do. Also during my short time playing I encountered so many bugs
For a game that cost $17, I'm so disappointed. I support this game in it very early access state because I really like the art. However, the content they put into it from early access to full release is so little. This game is the cause that I don't want to support early access game.
(EDIT) Changed my review to negative because the authors didn't really try with synergies or anything
I picked this game because I'm a fan of the very nice artstyle from the dev OneShark. All their previous games were idle clickers so I didn't have a lot of expectations because most deckbuilder attempts suck, but I was pleasantly surprised because this one is rather good, even if still far from the gold standard in deckbuilders that is StS. The game is a bit rough around the edges and lack some basic QoL and UI features, but it's still okay. The cards for example are not very readable, and it's difficult to know what's your progress wrt card unlocking or what the character levelups really means. Also no card encyclopedia. The devs wasted a lot of energy on useless features such as character customization or PVP, which is not what players want from a deckbuilder. The door choice doesn't work as well as the map in StS where you could planify your run strategically. Most of the time you're presented with three identical doors, which is dumb. On the topic of the game mechanisms, I'd rank it above Monster Train. It doesn't have the annoying Tower defense mechanisms of the aforementioned game. Here they added a dice mechanic that works rather well as a RNG-mitigator and helps a bit for for when you draw a f*ed up hand of cards. You have to choose betwen three classes at the start of the game, but we're far from the strategic depth of StS. But still good enough. You'll find the game easy if you're a StS veteran, I beat the last boss on my third attempt. I think I encountered some bugs, with for example doublons of my cards appearing, although given the genre, you're never sure it's a bug or an unnoticed status effect. Graphics are nice, but the screen is often very busy and difficult to read. The music is nice but very repetitive and that added to the back-and-forth animations on all the characters, it tends to put you to sleep very easily. Better to listen to something else. One problem is the stock price which at $17 is too high has probably cost some audience to the game. Should be more like $12 or something. If achievements are important to you, be warned than one of the achievements is linked to playing PvP, which could be an obstacle to some players. This is a very good first attempt, and if the devs tried to keep the core prototype and make a new deckbuilder, removing the useless parts and fixing what need fixing they could have a future hit on their hands. So I hope the devs don't despair that the game is a semi-flop.
(follow my curator page GenXPlayers for more retro and indie reviews)
Better than Slay the Spire as I own both. It's just a relaxing game, the fun is constantly improving your deck after each run.
I finished the game on second hardest difficulty, dragons and all that. Once you know what to expect it becomes quite easy. I would recommend it, but I still don't get it what they mean by 90 cards being in the game. I have done all I could and I would say there were about maybe 40 or 50 cards that I have seen. And none that were new for the last 3-4 runs. So I am pretty sure those cards either don't exist or maybe even specific. I have not tried insane difficulty, but I am pretty sure there is no more content or cards, only items but those are so meh. Maybe if you pay for the alternative bosses, they might drop something new, but it becomes so grindy that I would only consider doing that if I was sure there are more cards to come. So I would say it is quite good, but Knocking on Coffin's Door is somewhat similar with a lot more polish and better progression, better UI, actual story and VERY responsive devs. It becomes great fun if you stick with it and reach the point where you will see that there is actual progression. Actual content - lost of it. My bad, there is really that few cards, the shop does not refresh when you finish the runs. There is really that little content. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, this is bad. It really shows that they made clickers/idlers in the past, because it would be fine for that maybe, but for a rouge-like it is boring and unfair. Mainly boring. We have a love-hate relationship, but it is a good thing.
I really like the game overall but the relation content price it`s not good. Too short, too little variety of skills, cards and enemies.
