One half of the game is pointless and not fun at all. The other half is just a rehearshal of the original.
Doodle Kingdom takes the familiar element-combining formula of JoyBits’ earlier “Doodle” games and dresses it in a playful medieval-fantasy theme, inviting you to build a world of knights, dragons, magic, and mythical races one discovery at a time. At its core, the game sticks to the alchemy-style premise: start with a handful of basic concepts, combine them in pairs, and gradually expand your catalog until you’ve constructed a fantastical ecosystem. This approach can be immediately charming, because the fantasy framing lends more personality to the combinations you uncover. Rather than creating vague abstractions, you piece together tangible, recognizable fantasy elements—elves, dwarves, necromancers, enchanted forests, and more—each new discovery adding a whimsical piece to the world you’re assembling. The main “Genesis” mode forms the heart of the experience, and it’s where the game is most enjoyable. Mixing two elements and watching a new creature or object emerge can be surprisingly satisfying, especially when the combination follows a clever internal logic or references a familiar piece of folklore. Sometimes it’s intuitive—metal plus a human becomes a knight—and sometimes it leans into fantasy tropes in fun ways. The sense of slow worldbuilding through trial and error gives the game a casual, laid-back rhythm. You can play for minutes or hours, dipping in and out without ever feeling pressured. That accessibility is a strength: Doodle Kingdom is easy to pick up, easy to understand, and easy to enjoy in short bursts. Beyond the base mode, the game tries to broaden its appeal with several side systems. There are branching “quest” scenarios where you take on roles like a benevolent ruler, an aspiring necromancer, or a dragon keeper, each with its own flavor of objectives. There’s also the “My Hero” mode, which turns the game into a simplified dungeon-runner in which an adventurer fights monsters, gathers loot, levels up, and acquires gear. On paper, these modes break the monotony of pure combination-based play and introduce different pacing. The idea of breeding dragons, managing a hero’s progression, or restoring a kingdom adds thematic richness to what could otherwise feel like a single-note puzzle game. Yet this ambition is also where Doodle Kingdom sometimes begins to falter. Many of the side modes feel underdeveloped compared to the main combining mechanic. “My Hero,” in particular, demands a substantial amount of repetitive grinding for equipment and progress, without offering much strategic decision-making in return. The quests, while imaginative in concept, often unfold in straightforward or linear patterns, providing flavor but not significantly expanding gameplay depth. These modes are pleasant as distractions, but they rarely feel like fully realized game systems—more like optional mini-games added to pad variety. The element-combination system itself, while enjoyable in bursts, also suffers from inconsistencies. Some combinations follow a clear, logical chain, but many others feel arbitrary, forcing you into random experimentation rather than meaningful deduction. When the game’s logic breaks down, the process becomes less about creative problem-solving and more about mechanically testing every possible pairing until something sticks. This inconsistency can be frustrating for players who want a puzzle that rewards thought rather than guesswork. It’s a recurring issue in the Doodle series, and while the fantasy theme softens the irritation somewhat, it never entirely disappears. Visually, the game delivers a charming fantasy aesthetic with colorful illustrations and a warm, storybook style. Castles, magical objects, dragons, and mythic creatures all carry a lighthearted tone that suits the game’s casual nature. It’s not a visually complex game, nor does it attempt to be—but its presentation helps maintain an inviting atmosphere. Unfortunately, the game’s technical performance can be uneven on PC. Some players have reported crashes or minor bugs, and the general structure of the interface still shows its origins as a mobile title. The pacing, menu layout, and achievement structure all betray the design philosophy of a mobile game adapted to Steam rather than one built with PC play in mind. Ultimately, Doodle Kingdom is best approached as a short, relaxing, and imaginative diversion rather than a deep puzzle game or a robust fantasy simulation. Its strengths lie in its whimsical worldbuilding, accessible mechanics, and the simple joy of discovering new combinations. Its weaknesses come from inconsistent logic, shallow side modes, limited long-term engagement, and a sense that the game stretches itself thin when it tries to be more than its core identity. For players who enjoy casual creation-style games or simply want a light fantasy twist on the alchemy genre, it offers a few hours of enjoyable experimentation. For those looking for complexity, strategy, or sustained challenge, it’s likely to feel too lightweight and temporary. Rating: 5/10
Doodle Games are fun to play BUT NOT THIS ONE. Crashes frequently and My Hero mode is super awful especially for people hunting achievements. There is no scaling for XP and Gold gain and there is actually nothing you can do besides clicking some chest for 100 gold every now and then. Im currently at level 15 after being stuck at level 14 for HOURS (would probably take me atleast a full week to finish all achievements) because of the low XP gain. The other part of the game is not as good as it is with other doodle games but atleast playable. Don't buy this game, don't ask for it to be gifted and don't wishlist. Worst Doodle Game I've ever played.
