Do Animals Dream? is a wholesome attempt to explain that animals are sentient beings with feelings and not inanimate objects. What it basically does is reverse the roles between humans and animals, so instead of being in a world where humans are the ruling force, it is now the opposite. The protagonist is a whale hunter whose boat gets destroyed in an accident and then he is stranded on an island with talking animals. In order to escape you have to help cure their dying leader, and while doing that you will meet different kinds of animals who will tell you about their life's story or ask for a favor. I found some of them funny actually. The game doesn't take too long to finish, but there are 3 different endings ( or are there more? I only managed to find 3 ) which means you can replay it. Apart from the fact that choices matter, there isn't anything special when it comes to gameplay. It is basically a walking simulator with very simple animations. There are some map bugs that consist of invisible obstacles (maybe intentional, because the developer wanted the player to take a specific path ).
Short, Simple, and far from Preachy. Heed the Steam content warning.
While I appreciate the message this game is trying to portray, to treat all living beings especially animals with kindness, I do not agree with the agenda. Consuming meat does not make you a bad person, and just because someone chooses to be vegan, does not make them a good person. I do not agree with animal cruelty. Just because someone decides to consume meat, does not make them an abusive and horrible human being. I did like the message similar to the man looking in the mirror with the camera option. We can choose to be better people, but choosing not to eat meat doesn't make you a better person. Overall I'd give this game a 5/5 for the graphics, 0/5 for the vegan agenda.
A completely wholesome game that you definitely don't get emotional scars from.
This game is so bad it's good. I get the message it was trying to get across, but if it wasn't that condescending maybe more would've taken this seriously. Buy this when it's on sale the controls are pretty wonky.
I played this a year ago and I still think about it
A short adventure on an island with talking animals. First thing first, this might not be suitable for your youngest despite the cute animals and pleasant aesthetics. It shows the other side of the animal world that’s usually hidden behind fairytales. The point is that animals die too, and sometimes in a very cruel way. The message the game delivers is an honest one, but it goes for the shocking scene right from the start. Fortunately, that’s the only part because the rest is much nicer. You take the role of a young man who wakes up on an island after a shipwreck. Apparently, you’re the only one who survived. You get this information from a talking owl, the first thing you see when you open your eyes. It turns out you landed in an animal kingdom ruled by a lion king. But the lion is sick, so you’re asked to help. The controls are simple, and there are no special actions. The character can only walk and interact. The movement is a little strange because the guy appears to be on ice skates. This is obvious while attempting to go left or right; the character continues to look forward without turning, and he slides across the surface. Although you can explore the island for things to help the lion, it’s very small and linear. You can talk to a few animals, who will point you in the right direction or simply have a chat about how awful the humans are. General topics never go away and you can choose them again. However, there are a few situations where you can be nice or mean to someone. If you want all the achievements, you’ll have to be nice. The game can be finished in an hour or two. There are three endings, but the game makes everything very easy. Once you see one ending, the next game gives you all the important items right at the start. This allows you to see the other two in a couple of minutes.
It is hard to make a recommendation of this game. I mean it's a short fetch questing walking sim with no added bloat, but the underlying message seems vague. For a game that somewhat censures animal cruelty, you are given an option to actually inflict animal cruelty with no punishment whatsoever lol. Not to mention the game's visuals, main character (why is he walking like that?) and NPC sprites are looking adorable (despite some of them being morbidly misconfigured). I think the juxtaposing is cute, funny even, and made the tone of the endings creepier. I guess I'll give it a thumbs up.
