Appears to be a CYOA with game-book mechanics (like Lone Wolf series), but it plays more like a Visual Novel style game. You are given three choices, with choice A giving a small benefit, choice B giving no benefit, and choice C resulting in a resource penalty, but they all advance the story to the next page. It's all trial and error to find the a path that will not end the progression because of resource depletion. Then, it's back to the beginning of the story again, to try different choices that successfully end of the chapter. How many times are you going to re-read the same first chapter story, recording your previous choice outcomes on some paper, so you can try to access the next chapter. For me, that number was two. The game designers should have added something to help with this boring task - like a save system or in-game record of choice outcomes.

This is not a pick your own adventure book where the story changes based on your choices. rather, if you do not make the appropriate choice, you receive a ding to stats and the story continues down the same linear path, even going expressly against your decision, if need be, in order to do it. If you're familiar with choose-your-own-adventure books, you know that a choice will send you to entirely different pages of the book where the story is entirely different from where you were. That is not this book, and this game's page on steem is deceptive in portraying it as such. But then I'd not have bought it. And that's the point, they want to misrepresent this to make sales. if they didn't market it as CYOA & choices matter and told you it[b]'s writing style[/b] [strike]was geared toward kids < 12 yo[/strike] [b]was like what you'd expect for a book for 12 year old's[/b], they wouldn't get as many sales. Again, if you're an adult you won't find this content satisfying. It didn't even scratch my nostalgia itch as it is no-choice and all force-you-against-your-choices because they can't be bothered to write different story arcs for the user's choices. I didn't play long bcus nearly every choice I made was the wrong choice and it forced me down the opposite path instead, in direct opposition to my choice.

I am not sure why this has the 'choose your own adventure' tag because it's not. There is really only one good path to victory. That being said: The Good: - The story is well-written even if it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea. - The music suits the story. - It is pleasing enough visually. The Bad: - You're stuck with only one good outcome so choice doesn't really matter since there aren't multiple ways, or paths, to success. The main selling point for this game (choice) doesn't really exist or at least not in more than a superficial way. - Except for the female priest cleric I hated all the characters including the one that you play. This is personal preference but I felt an absence of any that were endearing in any way. The Ugly: - This game is very, very dark and could offend some. Granted some D&D modules are like that but it's worth mentioning that this isn't for kids. - This game falsely advertises choice. It is not the choice I expect from games like this. Overall: 6/10. I actually don't hate the game. The first two chapters really drew me in with the writing. But yeah the fact that it doesn't live up to what it's being sold as prevents me from giving this a good review.

This is a preliminary review as I haven't finished the game, but the Autumn Sale ends in a few hours, and as I nominated this game, I need this review for my badge. That being said, this isn't really a "Choose Your Own Adventure" game in the traditional sense, in that you don't get choices like "You encounter a man in the road. You can 1) approach him or 2) move to France." This is much more on rails, such as "You encounter a monster on the road. You can 1) hit him with your left fist or 2) hit him with your right fist." Or "You can attack with 1) your dagger or 2) a magic spell of Pointius Daggerius." I understand the benefits of this approach: the author only has to write one story, not 64 or 128 or 256 stories depending on your choices, but it means there's no replay factor unless you're trying to improve your score.

Note, this contains some spoilers. So, the tags for this game seem to be incorrect. Choices do not matter, except that some insta-kill you. There seems to be no possible change in the outcome of the story. Large parts of chapter 2 seem entirely pointless for instance as whatever you do there doesn't matter. Also, I was promised "play as a wizard", not "play as a demon-possessed vampire". Since I have no real interest in the latter, and since the only alternative to this was not playing the game, I chose to not keep playing the game. Unfortunately, by the time I had gotten to the whole vampiric demon possession thing, I had played for three hours, so over the regular 2 hour refund limit. So if you don't think that would be something you want to play, I suggest not even starting.

Wizard's Choice is a substantial (300k words!) text-based rpg that really invokes those gritty roleplaying sessions from the 90s. Wizard's Choice is a Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA) game in which you run a Wizard, Duh. I got a bit of a "table top" vibe as if you were playing an adventure module run by a mediocre Dungeon Master, neither good or bad. As it is, I enjoyed Chapter One. In Chapter Two, things fall apart. Let me explain. The game was/is still solid, I just did not like the direction the devs take the game, and there are 6 chapters total. It is a lot like the "John Wick" movie series: The first chapter you have a fighter buddy helping to keep the riff raff away so you can work your mojo. And an implied support system back in town. I liked the first "John Wick" movie because he was free to do his "thing" without fear. In Chapter 2, your Wizard is on the run, being hunted by everybody, like John Wick in Chapter 2 on. And one of the little "tips" that pops up on the loading screen says in the higher chapters your mental stat becomes as important as your health points; this leads me to think the Cult you ran across causes eventual strain on your sanity that must be managed. All this is NOT "breaking the game", it's just not something I personally enjoy so it still gets a Yes vote from me and the game is reasonably priced so I am not upset. But I will end here.

This is one of the best games I have ever played. It has rekindled something within me, I've been spoiled by modern games that I sometimes don't feel like I enjoy them anymore.... but this game showed me I still love playing. It made me recall the past by making sure not to make a mistake or make a great trade with the mistake, to think twice and sometimes in advance on what my decisions will cost, to balance my supplies and to take necessary risks. But most of all, despite losing over and over again, to continue and play until the end! I can't wait for more of your games, and thank you, for allowing me to enjoy a game just like that of when I wsa a kid.
