There's no doubt some major bias from me since I'm a massive Disney adult, but man I'd be lying if I said I'm not addicted. This game is essentially the ultimate cozy game. There’s farming, gardening, fishing, full valley decorating including your house, recruiting characters to your town, and a huge variety of side quests and collectibles that will keep you busy for ages. The base game offers roughly 80–100 hours if you focus on the main content, and even more if you dive into everything else. Additionally, each of the three DLC adds around 100 hours of gameplay, meaning that if you own all of them, you’re looking at roughly 400 hours of total content. Unfortunately, the game can get a bit pricey when it comes to in‑game items and moonstones—the game’s premium currency—which are clearly designed to trigger FOMO and encourage spending (typical greedy Disney…). The good news is that you don’t have to spend real money if you don’t want to. The game is still perfectly enjoyable without any extra purchases, though in my opinion, the DLC is absolutely worth it.
nothing says nostalgia like paywalls! what happens when a greedy company employs a greedy company? dreamlight Valley is what happens!
I'll start my review by saying this is definitely for Disney fans. If you aren't a fan, I think the gameplay loop might get a little dull without the excitement of bringing new characters to your valley and getting to interact with them. The good: The game regularly receives free updates, bringing new characters to the base game without the need for DLC. There are also seasonal events which provide more opportunities to get more decorations and items for free. You can also participate in weekly challenges to earn some premium currency. It's not a lot at once, but if you participate regularly and save up, it's enough to get premium shop items without spending real money from time to time. I have a couple of the DLCs and feel like the additional content was worth the money. The bad: Not a great game if you struggle with FOMO and don't want to top up your premium currency to get all the latest items from the weekly shop. When you crunch the numbers, items are pretty pricey for what you're getting. I only spend moonstones from DLC purchase bonuses and what I get from daily chests and weekly photo contests. Otherwise this could become a really costly game. Additional context: I play on multiple platforms so my hours here do not reflect my true hours in the game.
great idea however they pump out DLCS not much free content considering the base game and DLCS arent too different in price
Racist Customer Support I came back to the game after a long break and discovered that a major update had completely broken my save. Donald Duck's shop and Remy's restaurant, which I had fully upgraded, were reset to zero. Some decorations that I had paid for disappeared. My in-game currency was gone as well. This was not a small bug. The update broke the game for many players, and the developers told everyone to contact customer support. So I did. And I never received any actual help. Every single time I explained my problem, I got the same automated response saying that my country is not supported. My Steam account is registered in Kazakhstan, but it did not matter. No person ever looked into my case. The company took my money, deleted my progress, and then completely ignored me. My support tickets keep getting closed automatically without solving anything. Think twice before spending money on this game. If something breaks, there is a very real chance that you will lose your purchases and be left with nothing but automated replies.
I have over 1k hours in this game. Obviously I enjoy it, and have for many years. But would I recommend it? No and here's why... 1. I purchased the game in early access with the knowledge that the game was planning to be free for everyone else. The idea was if you wanted to play it early you paid $30, but at full launch the game would be free for everyone. This did not happen, within the year they announced that due to costs the game had to be full price. Disney...complaining about money burns my biscuit. 2. Let's say you want to play all of the content. Well you'll be paying $40 now for the base game and every DLC (there have been 3 with a new one releasing soon) is $30. Right there just for access to all the quests you are paying $130. 3. Premium shop is mad expensive. You can obtain moonstones through Dreamsnaps weekly challenges (and if you have this game I highly recommend you do). Otherwise if you want the Starpath (this games battle pass) you'll need to fork out about $10-$15 for moonstones. I am not a fan of premium currency in games aged for all. 4. The updates are very easy to binge. They don't take that long. So you will have months in between with very very little content. On top of that the Scrooge Shop which is an in game shop not requiring premium currency does not update that many items. To say the least this game is fun for a week once every 3 months. There are better games out there, this one is nice if you want to just pop in and play for an hour and then close it. No stress, simple tasks ect. But it's basically Disney Dreamlight Sims which is fun but not worth $130.
This game started out as a lovingly crafted, yet awfully coded, sweet Disney game. It was a pleasure to see it evolve from the tiny mess it used to be. Now, that's no longer the case. This game has become one big coporate slop machine, pumping out microtransaction content and never fixing bugs, unless those bugs impact the microtransactions. I genuinely loved this game so much, even though it was always really limited. But I'm done with Gameloft's anti-consumer greed. They have made it very clear that they simply do not want this to be anything other than a corporate moneytree and slop machine, constantly pumping out new stuff with as little required work as humanly possible. The game barely has any animations to speak of, always reusing the few animations (that are also extremly broken) and painting a new look on top of it, pretending that it's somehow different. The warning signs were there since the early days, when the devs promised that new content would be free for everyone, before suddenly acting like they never said that and making every minor thing a microtransaction. We chose to ignore it. And they happily took advantage of every player. I'm not gonna continue to support this disgusting corporate behavior, and I sincerely hope that more people step away from this "game". Ideally, the corporate dirtbags will let this return to being a passion project. Realistically, at best, Dreamlight Valley would instead end up dying in a pit of dragged-out corportate greed. Cannot recommend. If you value your time and money, stay away from this game. I've already wasted enough of mine.
It's easy to get started and play for a long time finishing quests. After a while though, the quests become boring and repetitive. This game cost a lot just to buy, so the fact that the DLC are also expensive is very disappointing. The expensive in-game currency is optional, but if you have FOMO when it comes to premium items and clothing, you will be spending a lot of money. For the price of the game, it is very high, considering that the game lags a lot and items/characters are constantly clipping through each other.
I had a phase with this game for a maximum of 3 months, uninstalled it one day and never played again. Such a boomer, I paid a lot for it and got bored from the repetitive gameplay :(
