Experienced on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers
You can view my video review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/WqFYG7mTRZI I am a big fan of Ninja Theory. They made my absolute favorite VR experience in Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. I actually bought this game, before playing HSS, on sale for $2.99 and completely forgot about it. Today I finally played it and I was excited to see what Ninja Theory brought to the table before HSS. I even like on-rails shooter. I think they are a good fit for VR. Drop Dead is the perfect example of making a good on-rails shooter for VR. Unfortunately, this is not a good game. You don't even really aim in this game. You tag the fire enemies with your blue reticle and tag ice enemies with your red reticle. Then release. Bam, you killed a bunch of fire and ice enemies. Now do that again for 5 more levels. You can also activate a temporary shield. There's an underwater level, a fire level, a snow level, a forest level, a boss level, and an arcade level with slightly different gameplay (it adds a new bomb enemy that you have to hit with ice, then fire & it adds a new ice slow or explode special ability). The visuals are decent and they probably looked really good in 2016, but the gameplay is bland & repetitive. The only real challenge is climbing those leaderboards. Now, there is easy, normal, & hard difficulty and I only played the game on normal. I finished it in about 30 minutes. I didn't want to play anymore after that. This game reminded me of mobile VR games or Oculus Go quality type game. Rate 4.5/10. Basically, I didn't have fun. However, it may appeal to you if you enjoy climbing those leaderboards or like the idea of an on-rails shooter where you tag enemies with the corresponding reticle.
A simple Panzer Dragoon or Rez type shooter where you have a colored crosshair in each hand to match up against colored enemies. Occasionally an enemies attack and you need to block their projectiles. There’s 4 stages with fixed patterns and a boss with randomized patterns, each takes a few minute and is a leaderboard score attack. The patterns are really well designed and fun to learn for repeated attempts. Hard mode makes it so that any mistake breaks your score combo. The game looks beautiful and has some of the best looking snow dunes I’ve seen in VR. Each area is pretty strongly themed (water, lava, ice, etc.) and look very different from each other. Everything moves on a rail, so if you get motion sick easily you should skip this.
DEXED is a clean, vibrant, surprisingly calming and especially satisfying arcade VR experience. Check out my full review @ https://vivereport.com/2016/09/28/ninja-theory-joins-the-vr-party-with-dexed/
Yes. And this is exactly one of the best VR titles I've seen on the HTC Vive. Even though it's an arcade game and there is not thaaat much to it. But what it does, is great. This game is not rich in content nor does it offer a lot of control in the game itself, however the game design, the game mechanics and the reward system is brilliant. The feeling to "be there" is so relaxing and statisfying. It was difficult to understand what the game was all about and how THAT could even be good. Especially by looking the trailers it looked rather boring. On a monitor with 2D mouse controls it would be dull. But in VR it looks and feels absolutely fantastic. The controls are highly precise and it is such a challenge to really get it right, to get the combos right, to memorize the levels and enemies a little and reach high scores. Now what's missing would be even crazier worlds that could dynamically/organically change, leave you in a strom or rain. Highly polished and well thought out!
My wife and I just couldn't get into this game. I gave it 30 minutes, and it just seems really boring to us. That is just my opinion, and this seems like a game one might play on a touch screen tablet or phone. I do not see this as a VR central game, but a phone port. Not bad in VR if you like those sort of games. I just expected something more than that from all the positive reviews.
Nice rail shooter with absolutely stunning graphics. If you liked the old "panzer dragon" games you will like this one. It got 4 Levels with 1 boss level. 3 difficultys for each and seperate leaderboards. I hope ninja theory will make more games, because they obviously know what they are doing. AAA polish!
So I'll start out with the bad - this is a short game, and you could potentially play through all the levels in a half an hour or so. The good? a) This is one of the best VR games you can get right now. It's a rail shooter with ikaruga like shooting controls, where you lock onto enemies of the opposite color instead of the whole aim/shoot/reload thing. b) The graphics are a class above virtually everything else in VR right now. It looks amazing. If I were HTC I'd make this a pack-in game.
The is a beautiful illustration of what a team of talented individuals can make happen in VR in a very short amount of time. The gameplay is kind of like a mix between Rez and Ikaruga, but there also doesn't seem to be that much of a sense of urgency in the gameplay... which isn't a bad thing. I will probably use this in the future as something to demo VR to people, and i'm excited to see what ninja theory comes up with on VR next.
A good idea, with an averagely polished graphics (not very detailed but competent, and with two dominant colors) and an on rail shooting gameplay with an Ikaruga kind of targeting. The only huge problem is the longevity: 20 minutes to beat all levels and the only boss. I knew before about the lenght, so my expectations about contents were very low, but Dexted is even shorter and easier than my worst fears. Replayability is just playing for best scores on leaderboards, and an arcade mode than (after 10 seconds of enthusiasm, finally some challenge!) is just a wave shooter in a closed arena.
