Take on the role of Detective Kobayashi, the one and only genius detective who has a reputation for solving any case, however dark or difficult...if he isn't playing games at the office or awkwardly hitting on girls, that is.

To be fair, I’ve always been a huge fan of the genre crime whether it’d be games or shows. There is just nothing more thrilling than trying to catch the culprit while you’re sympathizing with the protagonist. Actually, the only thing that would be even better than this is to catch the criminal yourself, which is possible in Detective Kobayashi which is a visual novel but with gameplay included. After playing and enjoying the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy, I was especially thrilled to check out a game with a similar premise, although I have to admit that my expectations were quite low in the beginning, I ended up enjoying several aspects of this game. Detective Kobayashi introduces Kobayashi Masayuki who is a detective and is trying to collect enough clues to solve five different cases. He gets accompanied by Matsuda Midori, who is an investigator as well and helps him out. Kobayashi tries to forget his past that has been haunting him although he will get confronted by it quite soon. Together with his team, the main goal is to save the victims and make the culprits confess their crimes they’ve been trying to cover up. First of all, I found the cast quite interesting as Kobayashi is the typical perverted guy you might find in anime as well. During serious cases, he manages to light up the mood by his weird comments besides putting the pieces together. This made him a very likable to me, but not because of his perverseness but because he manages to keep the team together as well as brings in some comedy as well, as the game already deals with sensitive topics such as death. Another character I found very refreshing was Matsuda Midori as she looks girly on the outside, but is actually very strong. I’ve always had a weak heart when it comes to strong female leads which she definitely is, although sadly there is no romance at all in this game. Detective Kobayashi contains quite a lot of interesting features. The most significant thing here would be looking for clues. This is done in a similar way hidden object games are and thus, there are items spread around in a room you can interact with and get clues from. Not every object does contribute to the story, however, I liked that you could scan the area and know which item you already inspected as there will be a green checkmark in the magnifying glass. When there is an object left to observe, it’ll be red so it’s immediately visible even if it only shows up for a short while. An important hint here is that you can drag the screen to get access to the whole room. While this already got mentioned in the tutorial, I ended up forgetting about it and got stuck until I figured out that you’d have to drag the screen. Additionally, talking to different people to find more evidence is essential. When collecting enough clues, the investigation ends. After completing an investigation, Detective Kobayashi moves on to the battle with the suspect. Here, you have to choose the right answer or evidence when trying to prove that the person on the other side is lying and concealing the truth. Sometimes, there are multiple suspicious statements the suspect makes but only one of them is disprovable so selecting the right one is necessary here. When selecting the wrong answer or clue, it’s a point for the suspect and eventually, you will reach game over if it happens too often although you can simply restart the confrontation. One hint here is that you can switch between evidence as well as character information, so the reader should pay attention to what the task actually requires. Lastly, the reader has to answer three questions as a conclusion of the case where the answers are floating around in bubbles. All in all, Detective Kobayashi is very linear and there is no way to influence the outcome except for a single choice in one chapter. This choice, however, only changes the end of the specific chapter but has no influence otherwise. In another chapter, you’re trapped into a room as well and have to look for a way to escape here. There are a lot of puzzles spread here, but once again, the order you have to do for these are fixed and it’s easy to get stuck here when the reader misses out a step or doesn’t know what he is supposed to do next. In this case, there is a Chinese guide I found which is quite useful, although you’d have to translate it first. Besides names, google translator worked fine for me and the steps were easy to follow. Something unique here is that there are light bulbs during the dialogue that light up every time Kobayashi has a new thought. When it’s yellow, personal thoughts of him are getting displayed when the reader hovers over the bulb while there are new hints available when it’s red. These thoughts are, however, easily skippable and don’t necessary when you want to experience the story and I have to admit that I stopped using this function quite soon as I was too lazy to move my mouse during the conversation. Additionally, mobile phones have their own features as well where you can chat with your team to solve cases, as well as discover new random numbers and chat with strangers. To be honest, I found a lot of joy in Kobayashi’s phone and spent a long time chatting with multiple people and the conversation is so well made that you can tell a lot of effort was put into this feature. I liked the artwork of Detective Kobayashi with sprites even having different facial expressions and although the style is quite simple, and there aren’t a lot of CGs available, I got used to it fast. It’s very charming and the background and investigation areas are detailed although it was hard to guess with which item I could interact, luckily we have the scan functions which can help us out in the worst case although it’s sadly not available during the escape room. That being said, I loved the Chinese voice acting. I just happen to find that Chinese is a beautiful language and despite being worried it might not fit at first, I even preferred it over the usual Japanese voice-over. Detective Kobayashi is, however, not fully voiced but only during the main story scenes. Detective Kobayashi deals with murder and solving cases while looking for evidence a lot. I found some parts, especially the escape room’s puzzles, quite tricky and sometimes getting stuck or trying out random answers might very likely occur although it feels quite good being able to catch the culprit in the end. In fact, this visual novel is very linear, yet I liked that you have an impact on one of the chapters although it only influenced the end of this specific chapter. Additionally, the game hints that there is going to be a second entry of this visual novel and I can’t wait to know how the story will turn out. That being said, Detective Kobayashi implements a lot of refreshing and interesting features I had a lot of joy messing with, and therefore, this visual novel will very likely appeal to those who love crime-solving. No dragonmaids 0/10 But seriosly .. Detective Kobayashi is indeed detective VN. It's originaly chinese game, the translation is ok even if it's rough around the edges but the deeper you go, you discover many problems ... like there is testemony where guy says that he doesn't know who lives in flat nextdoor but he heard noises from there, but the clue item says that he didnt hear anythng .... that makes you wonder how many miss-translations there actually are. There are partial chinese voiceovers of variing quality, specially your male collegue ... some of his lines sounds like they have been recorded thru pipe or something. Another issue with this game is the actual detective mechanic, you are gathering clues and then use them to prove contradiction in the statements .... but there are often many contradictions that can be proven, but game will only accept that "one" that devs were thinking about, other contradictions might be used later on or ignored altogether .... so game keeps failing you until you find that right one .... sorry but this is really just bad game design. Story itself isn't bad and game is kind of fun when you are not dealing with the issues mentioned above. But because of the issues I cant recommend it
Detective Kobayashi game is a mixture of Visual nove and Escape room. You play as Kobayashi, a lazy detective whose main goal is to find a girlfriend, so he keeps on chasing girls, however, when it comes to his job he focuses on it and delivers better than any of his colleagues, especially Ryu, his rival. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3034775166 The game has four cases and an extra short one, each plays differently. In the first two cases you investigate, collect evidence, interview suspects and witnesses, and then accuse the one behind the crime, however, in the third episode the game turns to an escape room style with multiple puzzles to solve, I honestly enjoyed it although it was pretty tough to solve. I liked how in the last episode you gathered everything you know to solve the last case, The game is pretty solid and I enjoyed every moment of it. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3035258657 You have a journal in which you collect evidence, and a character profile that you can use during the battle system when you confront the other person with what you've learned, be careful though you could easily lose as there is only one way to win, everything was logical in my opinion. During the gameplay, you can hover on the light bulb and read Kobayashi's mind to collect some hints about the case, or sometimes you read his thoughts about the girls he is talking with. Speaking of that, there is also a 'shake' option in Kobayashi's phone, where he can get a random number to speak with, in hope of finding his future girlfriend. The conversations are funny and some of them are emotional. I found all the characters are likable, I didn't dislike anyone. You can collect photos of special moments with the characters and fill Kobayashi's desk, the achievement is pretty easy if you like to explore things. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3035257652 Pros: +Interesting story. +Excellent writing. +Interesting and likable characters. +Nice soundtracks. +Good puzzles. +Manual save. +Steam achievements. Cons: -The story is still ongoing and there is no English version of the new game (It's on mobile) The game is very addictive, you'll keep thinking about who did it and what will happen next. I honestly suspected everyone, even the minor characters. The game's length is good; it took me 16 hours to finish it without a guide. There is a second season of the game on mobile, but there is no English translation of it yet. I still highly recommend it to people who enjoy investigation and detective games. First of all, I am really fan of this type of games, for example Phoenix Wright, The Room, Danganronpa ... So my review will have of some comparisons with those games.I will give my opinion about some themes that I consider important: GRAPHICS:Anime style, they are good and you can remember many characters for having such a unique style.Maps are fine too. For me this is 7/10:They are Okey MUSIC:This is not quite right for me.Some soundtracks listen when they finish and it is not very pleasant because it takes you a bit of experience to hear the same song starting, ending, empty space, starting ...However the songs are not bad so 5/10 CHARACTERS:They are really nice characters, you can enjoy with them, the protagonists are "special".But i had a problem with the witnesses:secondary characters. They are good characters however you cant love them because you dont have time for this. You only see them once per case also they do not interact with each other, they don't blame others (except when you're condemning one).So its a 7/10 because the protagonists are greats (I need to see more cases to feel sorry for Murata and love the "chief" of the police (I don't remember the name) * Kobayashi 2 *) DIFFICULTY(how interesting are the cases):I want to sort the cases from greatest to least difficulty:1º case 4 (and 3) =they are the best cases, above all, Case 3 is surprised by that great change of game style (like The room) i want to give my opion on "GAMEPLAY" and the history is so nice. 2º case 1=He was the one who gave me the most work, I don't know if it was because he was the first one or because I wasn't expecting the "plot twist" in my opinion a little fuzzy to be the first case. 3º case 2=I think of the main cases the easiest to be among the other 2, which I think are quite interesting, but it is curious, I would have put a case of this difficulty in the first case. 4º bonus case:its okey xD.So its 9/10 I was quite surprised, they are not the best cases in the world but they are really good. GAMEPLAY:The most important thing. There are a lot of minigames:Investigation=Its like Phoenix Wright investigations,so they are okey, you can enjoy some funny dialogues and you have "scan" if you dont want to waste time there,so its perfect.Mental Fights (i dont remember the true name)=it reminds me Milles Edgeworth investigations mental fights of course, these have typical flaws of these games, like those clues that both can be used and would say the same, but only one is the real. The typical situation of: I know what I want to say but I can't find the clue that says exactly that. But its me favourite minigame.Bubble games=I'm sorry, but this minigame is bad for me, I think it's not the best way to "solve" a case; 3 questions and 3 answers, it is true that when you find the solution it is nice, but I think there are better ways to summarize and prove that you have solved the case.Case 4=Its a great surprise its funny, interesting,"hard" i love it but i think that it will be worth have tips (more than 3) tips that you can look when you want if you are not interesting in this level so much or you want to play it and solve it fast.Mobile Phone=MasterpieceIts a 8/10 (bubble games) Finally, for the duration, the price, the fun it provides and for being a type of game that unfortunately are not very sold today (I love them), this game is incredible and deserves many more sales than it has (I don't know how much but surely not enough) I highly recommend it, I can't wait for the next one to come out, however I would love a translation into Spanish xD. Kobayashi lover here
This looks like a decent Detective Game which feature a few different Genres. It has Visual Novel Storyparts, Point and Click Type Gameplay together with Hidden Objective like features. You can basically talk to people, search for evidence and clues and move around between multiple areas. There is also a battle Game, where you have to use clues to contradict a statement and this is where i got annoyed by this Game. I am not sure if I am stupid or if its the Game, but the Clues that I found would have made sense to contradict a statement all were wrong. I tried quite a few and never got the right answer. It really isnt fun just trying every possible option and since i tried quite a few I just gave up. If you like Detective Games and Point and Click + Visual Novel Games then you will probably enjoy it. If you are like me however and dont have enough patience to get all the things right even though you are pretty sure that you got a good option, but the game only accepts a single answer as correct, then maybe stay away from this. I also dont like the Chinese language that much and the Voice Acting is in Chinese plus its not the best quality. Apart from that everything seems to work and the Art is alright. Considering this, I will probably come back to this Game once a Guide gets published so I can see what the right Answer is and still be able to enjoy my playthrough. If you like Detective Games and you can get it in a Sale, then for sure give it a try. If you are just looking for a nice Visual Novel better choose something else as you will really have to think in this one. Length wise it should be a good few hours for sure. 6.5/10 from a Quality point of view Check out my Curator Page: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/34401214/

The game starts out fine in the first two chapters, but then it changes gears into a puzzle solving scenario in chapter three. I don't mind puzzle solving when it is done fairly, but there are some puzzles that are pretty much impossible to figure out without a walkthrough. Like the infamous "drop the butterknife in the forest" in Mystery House, once the puzzle solving goes illogical, it is no longer fun to play.
As a huge Phoenix Wright fan, I had craved a similar game in quite some time, and I had to play Detective Kobayashi. It looks good on a PC screen, the character designs and backgrounds are very pretty. The first stories are not too hard to figure out, but the main fun is the gags and dialogue. I play with the voice volume turned off, since I'm used to this type of game without voiceover, just with silly faces and upbeat music. And because I like to imagine what the characters sound like. Apart from the detective main story, an extremely fun minigame is texting random people on the phone and talking to them about various topics. It does not influence the cases as far as I can tell, but it is neat world building and learning to know the main character. The conversations are different in each chapter, so I make sure to activate them all right at the beginning. I'm not much into translated character names, but I have to admit it works really well in Phoenix Wright, because they have meanings which you can't know unless you speak the original language. In Kobayashi, the names are left in the original version, so it makes a more grown-up impression than the Ace Attourney series. When you get Larry Butz and Lotta Hart, respective puns included (instead of Masashi Yahari and Natsumi Osawagi), it is of course cheesy, but good for easier introduction. But this is a matter of taste, and in doubt I would vote for keeping the original names unless something great is planned with the translations. I thought the lightbulb feature was a little superfluous at times, and it interrupted the flow of reading. Also, the lightbulb shows up only after the text has been typed in completely, which is easy to miss if you are a fast reader. In itself it is a cute feature to know what the character is thinking but not saying. However, if both speech box and extra info practically say the same thing, it's better to have it less often. Overall I'm enjoying the game a lot, I like talking to the colleagues and suspects and looking for clues. At the moment the cases are fun and entertaining, but after having played several PW games, I expect more dramatic twists in the coming ones.
I'm going to start here by saying that I ONLY recommend this game because I was able to find a guide for the original Chinese release (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1644345467) that isn't accessible from the localized game's community hub. It's a great story, and there's a lot of fun in the interactions between main characters, but the puzzles are hard to solve because of all the possible right answers. If you are certain you're on the right track, but you can't find what the game wants you to know, I recommend checking that. The investigations themselves are pretty straightforward. It's a scene investigation styled like your typical point-and-click, hidden object game. If you get stuck, there's hints for that. However, when it comes time to solve the cases and draw your conclusions, the debate minigame can be confusing. Not because you have to pay close attention to the case to get the right answer, but because there are so many possible right answers, and the game is looking for a specific one. There was a point where I could have easily countered every single point someone threw at me with the evidence at hand, and eventually it plays out that way, but it wants you to start with a specific one. I don't know if that's bad localization or bad game design, but it definitely got in my way. The other point of frustration is in the bubble minigame for drawing conclusions. In other areas of the game, you can get some hints on stuff if you get lost, but not here. In the one for chapter 2, I was literally writing different combinations for things on a sheet of paper to keep track of what I tried, because there were too many phrases that supported the exact same motive, but again, there's only one right answer. The debate/battle minigame frustrations aren't so bad, there are only so many logical ties the evidence can have, and even if you fail it's not like testing them all takes a huge amount of time. But this other one, you will know the answer, but because you can't find the one answer they want out of several combinations of correct answers, you could end up like me, stuck in one spot for over an hour, writing combinations on a sheet of paper because there's nothing left in the game to help you even if you restart the investigation.
A peotillomaniac who fancies himself a Sherlock must solve a series of cases involving “not” Thomas the Tank Engine, horror moopies, suicide, and toilet-related misconduct. Will he do it? Well, if it has two legs and a cute face, the answer is “yes”. The Good:

This is the only visual novel I’ve played so far—so maybe the visuals are run-of-the-mill—but I like them. I’m glad that when you’re investigating a scene you have a more isometric view to take everything in.
Has a bulb you can hover over to get a character’s thoughts while they are interacting with other characters or deducting.
There are only 5 chapters (including the bonus), but the cases at least have variety.
There aren’t really any awkward translations that stood out; maybe the occasional typo or misspelling (halluzinations, overnite, etc.).
You can copy/paste phone numbers.
The Neutral:

Under 10 hours of playtime.
The shake feature sounds like a teenage boy slapping off.
Not all lines have recorded dialogue, but when 2 or more characters are interacting, they usually do.
The Bad:

Tsuguo’s audio sounds off. It almost sounds like they had to get someone to record his lines from their home and you can hear a fan in the background.
The soundtrack doesn’t always have a smooth loop.
Contradictions are not always contradictions.
Pro Tips:

Make sure to use the shake feature at the start of every chapter. There are several characters you can talk to in each one.
If you want the Achievement Hunter achievement, here is what you do:
In Chapter 3, when you get to the room with the stove, don’t start the fire. Hit the pipe above the stove, and then hit the pipe with the valve on the other side of the room. Open the stove with the blue key and you’ll find a photograph.

There is a glitch with the Memories achievement, but there is a workaround: [olist]
In Chapter 4, use the shake feature to talk to Arai Yuki (Ponyo).
Get Arai Yuki to send her picture (finish the conversation) before interviewing the last person.
Battle
Matsuda
.
Open the phone and look at Arai's conversation after going to the crime scene.
The photograph should now be in your collection when you exit to the main menu. [/olist]
I would say the weakest parts of the game are the audio and the battles. When it comes to the audio, it’s too inconsistent with the recording quality, and the music needs a smoother loop. My issue with the battles is how I can find contradictions in someone’s story, but it doesn’t match with what the game actually wants. I like that I get to investigate, find clues, and piece things together, but the actual deduction minigames need more depth. Despite the faults, I still enjoyed it, but I wouldn’t pay the full $13 price.
