Recently, I gave a few Chinese visual novels a try and I managed to absolutely enjoy one or another title, and thus, I decided to give Fateful End: True Case Files a try as well. Obviously, I was already biased after playing through Detective Kobayashi that was from the same developer: Genuine. Admittedly, I never heard of them before, however, what could go wrong after I already made some experience with one of their games, right? Anyway, what stood out immediately to me was the stunning artwork, and the plot that seemed very mysterious. Unfortunately, despite me enjoying Fateful End: True Case Files, I feel like I simply expected too much of the plot.
The Culprit Might Be Closer Than Anticipated…
Fateful End: True Case Files starts with the actual end of the game where the protagonist gets abducted and killed. However, after the unfortunate events, the game loops back and starts at the very beginning to properly introduce the cast first. It seems like someone is secretly following the main character, however, he has no clue who it could be. Evidently, he cannot trust anyone, and even his girlfriend started to get cold towards him which made him suspect her of seeing someone else.
The Execution of the Plot
The main objective is simple in this game: To find out who wants to murder the protagonist. As aforementioned, this part of the game was my least favorite. I just happened to set my hopes too high for the mysteries and got utterly disappointed at the reveal. The reason why the protagonist got threatened was so shallow that I had a hard time believing anyone would go that far. The problem is that the view of the culprits doesn't get explained in-depth enough so I found the whole premise just off. Evidently, as the player doesn't know who is behind the happenings until the end, the objective of the culprit was not convincing at all. This aspect had a great effect on the pace of the plot as well. I was surprised when the game ended and even felt confused. That's it? That's everything? I was thinking that could not be the explanation for everything that took place. While there were no hints at all throughout the game that would have made sense for me for the writer to choose that outcome, all the information just got dumped to the player near the end of the game and then the credits rolled. Something I have to mention here is that I suspect there will be a second season coming up for the story so I still hope that the culprit's view will get explained more in-depth. As much as I disliked the route Fateful End: True Case Files went, I still found out one or another aspect that I didn't expect at all. Regardless, this visual novel still managed to surprise me, and along with that, I might have regretted a few decisions that I made because I felt like I trusted the wrong people. This made me feel bummed and I found this was a positive aspect as eager players can go back and fix their mistakes.
Investigating Through The Chapters
Every chapter mixes visual novel with point and click elements. There are multiple rooms where the player can freely move around to investigate objects or pick up items to merge them into a new one or simply use them on an item to advance with the story. I personally loved those parts as it required me to think outside the box, although most puzzles are fairly easy to solve. Regardless, I got stuck from time to time and it took a while until I understood what I was supposed to do, but luckily, those situations didn't happen often so I never got frustrated when not being able to think of the solution. Sometimes, taking a break is necessary, after all. [*]
Light-Bulb-Hints
So, in case the player is stuck, they can click on a light bulb in the corner of the screen. To be honest, I felt quite mixed about this feature as, on the one hand, it greatly managed to help me when I got stuck but, on the other hand, it was useless at times. By that, I mean that sometimes a text shows up that tells the player exactly what they have to do or where to find a needed item whilst, at other times, the hints didn't reveal anything at all. It was tough for me when I got stuck and the hints only told me to find some pictures so I was left all alone having to solve the puzzle. It slightly confused me as well that there was some mixture of the hints that some were very straight forward and others were expressed more complicated. [*]
Moving To Other Rooms
Well, this is a minor nitpick from my side, but I sometimes found it tough to find the spot when I wanted to move to the next room. Some areas are very straight forward and mark the next room with a white line, although sometimes clicking on the doors is enough as well. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case with most areas and I sometimes had to guess where to click when I wanted to investigate another area. I got the hang of that later in the game, however, it slightly interrupted my immersion in the beginning. [*]
Story Fragments
While investigating an area, the player can find story fragments throughout the game that seem to be hidden randomly in a room. With that, side-stories can be unlocked that gave me more insight into the cast as the main game is told solely from the protagonists' view and, evidently, he doesn't know what happened behind his back. Anyway, I really liked those side-stories as I, myself, had an entirely wrong impression and was able to sympathize with the side characters more. I felt like I even wronged them and may have judged them too fast, which is why I am grateful that there was still some content available besides the main story. [*]
Dead Ends
Fateful End: True Case Files implements multiple ends, as well as dead ends. The latter gets triggered when the player doesn't fulfill specific requirements, which will pop up when dying, by the way. Something that slightly annoyed me here was that I was so immersed in the game that I often didn't think about saving the game. However, when I happened to die because of a mistake that means that I had to replay a certain part of the game. This wouldn't be a huge issue, but this visual novel doesn't support the option of skipping the text. So, I would advise ocassionally saving the progress. In case there is a specific requirement, the player can still load the autosave file to correct the mistakes as it saves each time the player enters a new chapter.

Graphics and the Immersion
As aforementioned, I absolutely love the graphics. I feel like it's so refreshing from the usual anime-styled artwork and that was something that immediately managed to catch my interest. Whilst the backgrounds and investigating areas are rather simple, the CGs make it up more than enough as they're simply stunning. At times, it was hard for me to distinguish what object I could interact with so I ended up clicking on nearly all of them, which works out I suppose as I managed to unlock all side-stories by the end of the game.
So, what do we have in the end?
Fateful End: True Case Files does have its shortcomings. However, I still had a lot of fun playing through this game and finished it in one sitting so, in my opinion, it's definitely not a bad game at all. Sure, I had my problems with the execution of the plot but there were still a lot of aspects that managed to catch me off guard and not everything is as it seems here. That being said, Fateful End: True Case Files is definitely worth checking out for anyone who is into detective games, and puzzles, and I am personally looking forward to playing the second season if it will get added into the game. For the first time, I play a game as an evil character. The main character has a very bad attitude and deserves everything that happened to him. The game starts off with the future. You find yourself locked in a box as if someone kidnapped you, and after trying to escape, you've been caught and killed. Now, they'll take you 17 days before your death; you will be careful with whom you are dealing to discover who will kill you. The game has multiple endings, you could actually escape death too. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3041976135 I don't know what to think about the characters; sometimes you like them, and sometimes you can't; they actually did a good job writing the conversations between the characters and capturing their anger and bad personalities. The side story made me understand the characters more and was a good thing to wrap up the game. In order to get the side stories, you need to collect random story fragments throughout the game; you'll find them by clicking randomly in any area you are visiting. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3041976388 The game style is more like an Escape Room than a visual novel. Most of the time, you'll find yourself locked in three or two areas where you need to pick up items to help you open the door to escape, or you are hiding from someone, so you need to create a distraction to buy you time to escape. I enjoyed those parts, and the puzzles were fun, too; however, the hinting system is not very helpful. I found myself stuck a couple of times, and the hint told me to do a step I already had done. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3041975198 The length of the game is good, It took me 11 hours to finish it with only one ending, it has a total of ten chapters, and each chapter has its own puzzle and choices. The choices affect your relationship with the characters and this will definitely affect some part of whether the character you are close to helps you in certain situations or not. The side stories doesn't take long to finish, they are nine in total. Pros: +Interesting story (Total of ten main chapters and nine side stories). +Choices and consequences. +Good soundtracks. +Good game length. +Multiple puzzles. +Multiple endings. +Manual save. +Characters relationships meter. Cons: -No Steam achievements. -No chapter select. -No voice-overs, only few words. You better keep separate save files when you play the game because sometimes your choices lead you to death or being discovered, if you miss up your saves there is an auto-save at the beginning of each chapter. Too bad there is no chapter select after you finish the game. Fateful End: True Case Files intrigued me with its unique plot and art style, however between the text setting being either a snail pace, or double clicking to simply be able to read at a rate above that of a child reading for the first time, and puzzles that left the player with no direction I can't recommend this game to others. The story seems interesting but as I haven't been able to finish the game, and have only managed to complete the first 3 chapters, that is all I can speak on. The story I've witnessed quickly falls off after the first chapter, the main character isn't anyone you want to root for and it's not surprising that someone was out to kill him. The main character makes a living through scams and forgery to make quick easy cash that they can then invest. He's manipulative, you can make him cheat or be faithful to his girlfriend to whom he has no regard for her circumstances. Instead of trusting that her father is ill, the company she never wanted to inherit, and the long hours, the main character decides that she must be up to something because she refuses to get in bed with him more and more often. Despite the game having many choices the only indication I could find that they affected anything in the story was relationships to the main character. The puzzles and hidden object portions of the game were okay at best. Many of the hit boxes for the areas were difficult to find or poorly structured, and many locations could only be searched after triggering the event that required you to retrieve an item. This means that the player has to research entire rooms over and over again to find any new interactables within it. I could have overlooked this as I was still a bit intrigued by the side characters of the story, and because I wanted to see just how horrible of a person the mc was. Unfortunately, this wasn't were the issues ended. In the fourth chapter I visted Yu's (a girl the MC used to have a crush on while dating his current girlfriend) school only to get locked in the room. I collected the necessary items and entered them where needed. From here the in-game clue helper could no longer help me and the clue given from a projector didn't appear to do anything. There were no new interactables no matter how many times I clicked around the room. All I had to go off of was a piano tune with no context and a phone. I've never been a fan of music based puzzles, and likely never will be, at least not without a clear clue given for it. It's unfortunate how this particular title played out. I am not opposed to trying out other titles by the developers in the future, but for now I can say this one is a hard pass. There are simply too many issues in both design and structure for me to recommend this game to others in good faith. The art of the game may hold a level of polish but it isn't enough to save this game from the many problems already mentioned above.
Genre
Eine Visual Novel mit Point & Click Adventure Gameplay
Story
Again I find myself wishing I could write a neutral review. The game quality is forgivable for the price. Its plot depth is rather typical for a mobile game mystery. That said, I found myself more frustrated than not. For a point and click, those sections are frustrating, with no clearly defined artistic objects that have you button mashing the screen for anything that may register with no rhyme or reason - only to find a bit of advancing dialogue means areas you already checked may have new items now that you're looking for something new. The text speed was gratingly slow and no good way to adjust to fix beyond double clicking. I personally found the MC to be completely intolerable, which didn't endear me to saving his life. On more than one occassion I got stuck for 10+ minutes just because I couldn't figure out how to navigate my way around the room or even realize there WAS more to the room with the registered click area to move or turn not being well defined or easy to find. Once you actually found the objects - the puzzles were decent. The music tracks were limited, but fit the moods well. The art was good. At $5 I feel Iike I got what I paid for, but I still wouldn't tell anyone this is something they should purchase.
Nice game! Good suspenseful atmosphere with just a few splashes of light horror. I thought the story was really well done. All the characters have a reason to hate you so it keeps you guessing till the end who wants you dead. The one thing I might say is that there are a few parts that play uncomfortably like a dating sim, but maybe that's just me. Beyond that I would definitely recommend this game.
lovely novel type game
