This game is an old school first person shooter like Quake and Duke Nuke em 3D. The difference is that you're flying a space craft that can move in 10 different directions. Once you master the keyboard controls it's more fun than any of the other old first person shooters.
Once you get it working with the DX Rebirth mod it works flawlessly. Great trip down vertigo/memory lane, retro games were tough!
This game is so nostalgic but also is still just a good game till this day.

It is a great action retro game that thankfully is now available for all. I am so far on level 3 and loving this game again. I played it years ago and now get to play it again. In order to play it you need dosbox installed before hand. The first time I installed the game from Steam, it would not work so I uninstalled it, installed dosbox and now it launches fine. Remember to press F1 for all the keyboard shortcuts including how to save.
Classic shoot-em up game!
when it was released, it was absolutely mind-blowing. I had a 486 DX2-66, got the demo off a computer magazine, and played it until my eyes bled. Something like this, 360 degree movement FPS, did not exist before Descent. Later i bought the game. A year later, Quake was released. The nineties was a very good time to be a young gamer. Descent atmosphere was unique. The sequel was good but never quite the same. Also the music in Descent is something that just sticks in your mind. Now with rebirth mod, you can play Descent on your modern computer without any issues. I recommend you do so.
I bought this game when it came out. At that time the degrees of freedom it offered was completely new.
For some reason, Descent is one of my favorite games of all time. When we think about the 90s, we usually think about Doom, but Descent, which came a few years later, is to me an equally great FPS. Its core gameplay is simple, yet its atmosphere and fast-paced action remain unmatched even today. No other game puts you in a truly full 3D environment like this. The mix of sci-fi and subtle horror through its art style and sound design creates something special, somewhat reminiscent of System Shock, though in its own way. Should you play it today? Hard to say. This one is unique: with full 3D movement, you can easily get disoriented or lost in the maze-like levels. The graphics are basic by modern standards, and the gameplay loop is straightforward. But on the other hand… what an experience. I recommend playing it using the DXX-Rebirth executable, which runs perfectly on modern systems and stays faithful to the original game I loved in the 90s.
As creepy challenging as it ever was
Love it back in 1994 (Shareware) and still after 31 years! With some Mods still playable today!
