Unreal Tournament is the original King of the Hill in the frag-or-be-fragged multiplayer gaming world. As the undisputed 1999 Game of the Year, Unreal Tournament grabbed the first person shooter genre by the soiled seat of its pants and knocked it around the room with its never-before-seen graphics, brutal edge-of-your-seat gameplay and...

I've played a lot more of this outside of Steam....hundreds of hours, probably. One of the best multiplayer shooters of all time. As of 2026, runs very well on Linux. I suggest switching to the OpenGL renderer, where it allowed my max resolution. I think the overall graphics quality is lower, but I prefer native resolution at full screen.
A brilliant game. A hallmark of PC gaming's golden age. The best of the best of the best of the Arena shooters combining raw attitude with brilliant design and a genre-expanding featureset, like a last furious shout from a different era when things were free to be wild and edgy and insane if they wanted and if anyone didn't like it, too bad. The Epic Games that made this gem of a time gone by doesn't exist and it wishes this relic reminding you of the time when it could would just cease to exist entirely. They never built anything better, in my opinion. This was the last stop before early 2000s shooter syndrome ruined Unreal 2, then Unreal Tournament 2003, and after the brief interlude of UT2004 came the shift to console, and the end of PC gaming's golden age.

Thats not just a game thats a work of art.
A relic of it's time and an engine almost entirely made by 1 very smart dude. Can't be bought now but you can get it for free with a community patch on oldunreal.com
1999... Quake III Arena and Unreal Tournament in the same year, what a time to be alive it was dawg. Besides being one of the definitive pinnacles of the arena shooter genre, Unreal Tournament helped pioneer competitive multiplayer alongside Quake III. Back then, I had no idea what I was actually witnessing as a kid. Looking back now, it's crazy realizing I got to experience the birth of modern competitive FPS gaming firsthand. The weapon design was nothing short of revolutionary. Every gun had a distinct identity, but mayn... The maps? Like dafuq, absolute masterpieces! Especially the CTF maps were some of the most iconic multiplayer maps ever conceived. The rivalry between UT and Quake III also helped establish a new blueprint for the industry. Multiplayer wasn't just a feature anymore, it was the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game. We're talking about two mfs that helped legitimize competitive gaming, laying the groundwork for professional players, major tournaments, prize pools, sponsorships, and everything that would eventually become modern esports. Like come on! Ts was pure dopamine, y'all are hearing these in your heads while reading this I bet: Killing spree! Dominating! Rampage! M-M-M-M-Monster kill! Some of my best gaming memories were forged in this masterpiece. Whenever Unreal Tournament crosses my mind, it's nostalgia in its purest form. I know it's a bit cliche but it's also faxx homie: games like this simply don't get made anymore. Calling it the greatest FPS ever made might be a stretch, but if someone genuinely believes it is, I wouldn't argue with them. I'll never forgive Fortnite for being the reason the Unreal Tournament reboot was abandoned by Epic. Crazy that it's not even the worst ♥♥♥♥ that happened to UT, because they also delisted every Unreal Tournament game from both Steam and the Epic Games Store, and shut down the official servers too. It all feels like getting disconnected from the internet because someone picked up the phone during the dial-up era. ♥♥♥♥!
Since the original game came out in 1999 I have been coming back to this game on a regular base. It just has something that other games never achieved for me.
Sigue siendo uno de los mejores shooters de los 90s y 2000s
10/10 - if games these days were as enjoyable as this the world would be a happier place
