amazing game, very hard but fun. controls are good and easy to learn.
drive me Crazy!
Demon Hearts is yet another retro pixel 2D platformer infesting Steam. Control some kind of vampire/demon lady and stab ghouls and things. The art style is really bad here, the developer tried to start with the "colourful background and black foreground" schtick that dozens of lazy indie devs use because hiring an artist or having talent is beyond them, but then the developer decided to make some things in colour anyway because who cares about consistency in game design. The game also has fixed resolution assets and un-mappable controls (the developer could not tell the difference between a HOTAS, racing pedals, racing wheel and peasant gamepad, or didn't know how to write control remapping code, so your character always runs to the left). All these technical difficulties along with boring, uninspired platformer gameplay add up to a big thumbs down.
Thank you developer for giving me the stress that I was missing ;)
This game is a hardcore platformer and definitely not my first. I've beaten Electronic Super Joy, Super Meat Boy, Giana Sisters Twisted Dreams and a few others. There are certainly fun stages and a lot of challenge here, but there are also issues that need to be addressed. I enjoyed the traditional stages, but I take issue with the Curses stages. Quite a few of them felt unreasonably tight even by hardcore standards and you end up stuck in high intensity without any break since those levels don't have checkpoints. Also, some of the later curses levels also have a death laser hot on your heels, which feels unnecessarily redundant. Be ready for your hands to hurt. There are also possible glitch issues with the character's weapon. I have had multiple times with the vampiress where she'd kill and enemy with her sword and still die, which doesn't feel right. The cat girl's slash animation and damage don't even come out sometimes when you hit the button. X( Speaking of which, yeah, there's more than one playable character and they have different abilities, but the levels are all the same, making the option seem more like filler.
I would overall recommend it, maybe more on sale. I noticed in other reviews that they were complaining about input errors, but I didn't have them, so the developer might have fixed that. I felt it was pretty solid platforming overall. The fighting isn't too satisfying and feels more like an obstacle than a battle. The game is hard, and I think the levels could have ramped up more to prepare you for it.
