9/10 would play again thank you
Demon Core is a short horror game that I found genuinely tense because it makes navigation part of the fear. I enter an abandoned nuclear power plant wearing a radiation suit, carrying a map and a radiation detector while something dangerous moves through the facility. I really liked that I am not given convenient waypoints telling me exactly where to go. The map and radiation detector are the heart of the gameplay. I have to figure out the layout myself while watching the radiation levels around me and deciding which routes are safe enough to take. I enjoyed this because it makes exploration feel like an actual survival problem. Getting lost is not just inconvenient because I also have to worry about what might be waiting nearby. The creature also works well because I cannot simply fight my way through the facility. The focus is on surviving and finding a route through the plant rather than turning the game into a traditional action horror experience. I liked that choice because it keeps the tension high whenever I hear something nearby. The atmosphere is easily the strongest part of Demon Core. The abandoned nuclear plant, radioactive corridors and disturbing scenery create a bleak setting that fits the psychological horror tone perfectly. The sound design also helps a lot because the quiet sections make every sudden noise feel much more threatening. My biggest issue is the limited amount of content. The experience is intentionally short, and once I have learned the general structure of the plant there is not much left beyond replaying it. Some navigation can also become frustrating when I lose track of where I am, although that is partly what makes the experience so stressful. I also appreciate that the game relies more on tension than constant action. There are no elaborate chase sequences dominating the whole experience, so I have time to become uncomfortable with the environment before the next threat appears. That slower approach makes the horror feel more personal to me. Overall, Demon Core is a compact and effective horror experience with a great setting and a clever navigation mechanic. I liked using the map and radiation detector, and the decision to make the threat something I have to avoid gives the game a strong identity. It is short and occasionally frustrating, but the atmosphere makes the journey worthwhile. Rating: 6.8/10
