Simple little tower defense game where a map can support up to four players, all working together to beat all enemy waves. Towers are a bit unique because you buy a random one each time you click the button, so you never know what type you are getting. The same button can also upgrade an existing tower, so clicking it does not always mean you are getting a new one. While a tower or upgrade always costs the same, placing it requires you to increase the population limit, which becomes more expensive with each purchase. Once bought, a tower can be placed anywhere on the nodes around the map. The map is simple since it is circular, and enemies spawn and loop around it, meaning you do not have to kill them on the first pass because they will come back. Although you can control your invincible drone around the battlefield, it has no purpose other than collecting loot from destroyed enemies. Once collected, you can place it on any tower to boost damage, fire rate, or critical chance. If you have money to spare, there is a shop in the center where you can buy the same components. If you want a higher chance of getting money or a specific type of loot, you can spawn four special waves that move alongside the regular enemy wave. They take time to recharge after each use, but you can activate them as many times as you want. Although enemies loop around the area, you can still fail if the number of enemies on screen exceeds one hundred. You may survive a few waves, but eventually you will not be able to keep up with stronger enemies regardless of your towers. The money you earn will not be enough to buy new towers or upgrades to defeat them all, so you need three friends to beat it.
(Defend the Lab)*, developed and published by 围巾, positions itself as a cooperative-focused twist on the classic tower defense formula, blending familiar strategic fundamentals with a light roguelike structure that encourages experimentation across repeated runs. At its core, the game revolves around protecting a central laboratory from increasingly intense waves of enemies, but rather than leaning solely on static defense placement, it introduces a layer of adaptability through randomized upgrades and equipment systems. This gives each session a slightly different rhythm, where success depends not just on planning but also on how well players can react to evolving circumstances and available tools. The defensive systems themselves are straightforward yet flexible, offering a range of tower types that cover standard archetypes—rapid-fire turrets, high-damage precision units, and area-of-effect options that handle crowd control. What makes the gameplay loop more engaging is how these tools can be modified or enhanced during a run, creating opportunities for synergy and specialization. Instead of locking players into rigid builds, the game encourages trying out combinations that may not always be optimal but can lead to surprisingly effective outcomes. This approach adds a layer of unpredictability that helps offset the inherent repetition often associated with the genre, though the depth of these systems still feels somewhat limited in its current form. A defining feature of *Defend the Lab* is its emphasis on cooperative play. Supporting up to four players, the game shifts from a purely tactical experience into something more dynamic and, at times, chaotic. Coordination becomes a central part of success—deciding who focuses on which defenses, how resources are divided, and how to respond when enemy waves begin to overwhelm carefully laid plans. In these moments, the game delivers its strongest appeal, as teamwork and quick decision-making create tension and memorable scenarios. However, this strength is also dependent on having a group to play with, as solo play can feel comparatively subdued and less dynamic. Visually, the game adopts a clean, functional style that prioritizes readability over flair. The top-down perspective and simple effects ensure that players can easily track enemy movement and tower coverage, which is crucial during more hectic encounters. While this design choice supports gameplay clarity, it does come at the cost of personality. The environments and visual presentation lack the distinctiveness that might make the game immediately recognizable or memorable, leaving it feeling somewhat generic despite its solid mechanical foundation. Where the game shows its rough edges is in its sense of progression and overall content depth. While the roguelike elements introduce variety, they don’t yet provide enough long-term incentives to keep players engaged over extended periods. Runs can start to feel similar after a while, and the absence of a more robust meta-progression system means there’s limited motivation to continue beyond the immediate satisfaction of surviving waves. This gives the impression of a project that has a strong base but hasn’t fully realized its potential, particularly in terms of replay value and player retention. Even so, *保卫实验室 (Defend the Lab)* demonstrates clear promise. Its combination of cooperative gameplay and modular tower defense mechanics creates a foundation that could evolve into something much more compelling with additional updates and refinements. For players who enjoy experimenting with strategies or playing casually with friends, it already offers moments of genuine enjoyment. The key question is whether future development will expand on these ideas and address its current shortcomings. In its current state, *Defend the Lab* feels like a competent but still maturing entry in the tower defense genre. It delivers enough variety and cooperative appeal to stand out slightly, but it stops short of being truly memorable due to its limited depth and presentation. With continued support, it has the potential to grow into a stronger contender, but for now it remains a modest, enjoyable experience best suited for short sessions or group play. Rating: 6/10
