I called the original DeathSpank "a thoroughly mediocre action RPG that takes after Diablo but never manages to be all that entertaining", and while some of my complaints 100% apply to the sequel, the significantly increased difficulty meant I actually had fun with Thongs of Virtue. My gripe with the itemization remains the same as the original game, so I'll just repeat it here: "Probably my biggest mechanical issue with the game is the itemization - there's no randomly generated loot, and almost all items are just straight upgrades that require higher levels to equip. The only exception to these are the weapons which allow you to use your Justice Meter, which also have tiered upgrades, but deciding which of them to use is actually slightly interesting - though I found the spinning swords to be the best of them by far, to the point where I didn't really use the others much." In this game, at least, the stores were much more useful, as you actually had the money to purchase things sometimes, like potions, refills of your consumable weapons, and very occasionally equipment upgrades. Due to being significantly harder than the original DeathSpank, Thongs of Virtue was also much less simple, since you need to use the variety of consumable ranged weapons, potions, and other items in order to get through the many tough fights in the game. Figuring out which ones to use when will turn an annoyingly hard fight into a cakewalk, which I enjoyed. As far the humor... I said this about the original: "The parody elements were occasionally amusing, but frequently fell flat for me - that you're going on a set of stupid fetch quests isn't made any better by the game calling attention to how stupid the fetch quests are, for instance. It's one of my gripes about parody RPGs in general, that they frequently seem to think that it excuses replicating bad game design for the sake of parody. Some of the more puzzle-like quests were amusing, however, and weren't something I was used to in this type of game." and I'd stick with it, but somehow the humor hit better for me in 2025 than 2015. Can't really explain why, just my tastes probably changed. So again, DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue is the kind of game I would mostly suggest trying if you think its style of humor would appeal to you. It doesn't really stack up well without that, though Thongs of Virtue is in all ways a significantly better game than the original, and I will recommend it as a result.

This game is a must!
DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue is a delightfully absurd action-RPG from Hothead Games, published by Electronic Arts, and it continues the outlandish adventures of the self-proclaimed hero of justice, DeathSpank. Picking up immediately after the events of the first game, the sequel wastes no time throwing you back into a world where heroic bravado, zany humor, and over-the-top situations collide. What distinguishes Thongs of Virtue right away is its commitment to expanding the universe beyond the fairy-tale fantasy backdrop of the original. Instead, the sequel blends multiple genres and time periods into a single chaotic road trip: one moment you’re battling demons in fantasy forests, and the next you’re mowing down enemies on a war-torn battlefield, sailing with pirates, or facing robotic monstrosities and alien abominations. This genre fusion gives the game an unpredictable, comedic charm and reinforces the series’ identity as a satire of RPG traditions. At the heart of the experience is the combat system, which retains the accessible hack-and-slash gameplay of the first game while adding a wider arsenal to keep encounters lively. Instead of limiting you to swords, maces, and crossbows, Thongs of Virtue opens the door to modern firearms such as pistols, shotguns, machine guns, and even RPGs. These weapons coexist with magical staves and melee gear, allowing you to mix ranged and close-combat strategies freely. The quick-swap weapon wheel makes it easy to experiment mid-fight, and the returning “Justice” meter rewards steady offensive pressure with powerful area-clearing abilities. Combat is fast, flashy, and humorous rather than tactically deep, and it works best when embraced as part of the game’s exaggerated tone. While it can grow repetitive over long sessions, the variety of environments and bizarre enemies does help keep things feeling fresh. Narratively, Thongs of Virtue embraces comedic storytelling without apology. You’re tasked with tracking down six mystical thongs—relics meant to maintain world harmony but corrupted by their wearers, who are now powerful, deranged bosses. This absurd quest structure sets the stage for jokes, puns, and affectionate mockery of fantasy and sci-fi conventions. The dialogue is written with a playful rhythm reminiscent of classic LucasArts adventure games, and Ron Gilbert’s influence is obvious in the dry wit, eccentric characters, and the willingness to be unapologetically silly. Even routine side quests become entertaining thanks to the humor baked into NPC personalities and quest descriptions. These writing strengths help compensate for the formulaic nature of some tasks, making even fetch quests amusing through charm and attitude. The visual style remains consistent with the first game’s “pop-up storybook” aesthetic, using bold outlines, vibrant colors, and layered landscapes that give environments a handcrafted feel. Each region has distinct thematic flavor, from icy northern outposts to industrial war zones, and the exaggerated character animations reinforce the game’s comedic identity. While the technical polish might not rival modern action-RPGs, the cartoonish presentation suits the game’s tone perfectly. Voice acting is another standout, with DeathSpank’s booming, overconfident delivery anchoring the humor and supporting characters adding personality throughout the journey. Despite its strengths, the game does inherit some weaknesses from its predecessor. The overall structure mirrors the first game closely—so closely, in fact, that players who finished the original shortly before playing the sequel may feel they’re experiencing a larger expansion pack rather than a fully distinct installment. The sidekick co-op feature also returns with limited functionality, offering casual support without much depth or agency for the second player. Additionally, combat simplicity and occasional backtracking can make the pace drag in certain segments. Yet these issues rarely diminish the game’s charm; rather, they highlight that Thongs of Virtue is best enjoyed in bursts, with an appreciation for humor over tightly engineered mechanics. As a whole, DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue succeeds by leaning confidently into its strengths: irreverent humor, colorful variety, and a gleefully chaotic world that refuses to take itself seriously. It expands the scope of the original while preserving the personality that made the first game memorable. For players seeking a polished, strategic action-RPG, this may feel too light and too silly. But for anyone craving a quirky adventure packed with jokes, outlandish characters, and satisfying, fast-paced action, Thongs of Virtue delivers an experience that is both entertaining and unmistakably unique. Rating: 8/10
It's been a while since I last played a DeathSpank game, and even still I hadn't forgotten it. The irreverent, often nonsensical and somewhat meta humour and interesting art style leave a lasting impression, at least on me, and going back into DeathSpank was a touch nostalgic, as well as interesting. That said, I may have good memories, but there are a few things that concern me about this title. The difficulty is all over the place - in the beginning, enemies are regually higher levels than you are and sport some very frustrating kits (flamethrower troops, exploding robots, ect.) which makes getting going a little on the rough side, and will likely cost you a few deaths. After that, the difficulty evens out a touch apart from noticeable spikes (the invincible Undead Commanders and skirting around the giant electric tower) until you reach the desert town, whereupon I started to get significantly overlevelled - to the point where mobs started to become green and grey instead of orange and red levels, and aside from choosing to tackle the frost DLC at it's level, I didn't experience any real difficulty once I reached that point, which leaves the pinnacle of difficulty being reached at about 25% of the way through the game. Armour is largely just a health booster, other equipment barring weapons is also just basic stat boosting, and levelling rewards are still mediocre as they were before. I also feel the combat is a little... wonky, due to how tricky it can be to melee some enemies due to odd hitboxes, or how dangerous enemies can just be spawned in to annihilate you if you pick the wrong quest or wander into the wrong cave. That aside, though, there's plenty to like. DeathSpank's sense of humour and meta awareness proved to be a fun distraction, and DeathSpank (the protagonist) has a wonderfully stupid personality, which leads to a lot of amusing moments - the bumbling idiot hero cliche isn't used much, and that's a shame because it lends itself well to a lot of fun dialogue. The actual plot is a little dry, and doesn't contain a lot of *particually* interesting moments, but that might be the story beats not landing for me, since the encounters with bosses and NPC dialogue tend to be at least a little amusing. I'm also very fond of the artstyle and the visual presentation of the world and gear you acquire - DeathSpank's artstyle has let the game age much better than a lot of similar games from it's time period, and I think that'll continue to occur as time goes by. There aren't a lot of games out there that remind me of DeathSpank, and I've played quite a few titles in my time, which speaks to the game's somewhat unique presentation and styling. While I think too many games like it would diminish all of them, I have to say, I'm glad some do exist. For every serious, intense and meaningful game with important characters and complex world building, it's good to have a few irreverent, lighthearted titles that put on a good show. DeathSpank is one such title - and I'd say that it's worth the money and the time, though I would recommend playing the first one first as some of the story beats might not land as well if it isn't fresh in your mind.
Enjoyed this as much as the first game.
Fun art style and good humor. A reasonably fun gameplay loop, though certainly not deep.
After 4 hours of gaming, my save file is corrupted and I can't play this game anymore
