Adventure. Gunslingers. Outlaws. Shoot-outs. War. Set in the Wild West, Dead End Junction hits on themes relevant to the setting, such as treatment of the Native American population and the scars left by the Civil War (represented fictionally in-universe); many of which are applicable today.

Calling this product a game would be an overstatement. There are no choices to speek of, so it's not even a Visual Novel. Right from the get-go, Dead End Junction presents itself a digital dime novel. And its easy to see why; It was build from the ground up to be a short, pulpy cowboy flick. But that doesn't mean it's bad, as i learned. 8 hours may seem on the short side for VN's, but because of it, DEJ has got really excellent pacing. There is always someting going on and no plotpoint is lingered on to long. The characters are very well written, and although some are a bit trope-y, they play off each other superbly. And finally, the world of DEJ is great. At the start it seems like your typical Wild-West World but it dosn't take long until this notion is abandoned for a much more interesting setting. The only valid criticism i have is that the action is downplayed quite a lot. All fights are just one still frame and some sounds. There isn't even a description of the fight, its just *kling* *klung* [Fate to Black] and thats it. All in all a very solid ga- digital dime novel thats best experienced over the course of a week in small chunks. 7/10
The reason for the thumbs down, is that there is NO option to save your progress in the read through. So every time you exit, you have to go back to the start of the chapter you were on. This makes it frustrating to read this digital comic strip. The story itself isn't bad. It's the repetitive button pressing to progress to the next speech bubble that makes it feel boring.
Basically a fantasy western JRPG ala Wild Arms if you strip all the world map travelling and turn based combat and leave just the really nice comic-book style cutscenes. You can't help but keep expecting the game to cut into world map travelling or turn based random encounter at any point.
Just 85/10!
Cowboys,
zombies
and
dimension hopping.
Yeah...It's good!
Went in with little expectations, but soon found myself hooked.
Just another typical story that was not that interesting made in a comic style art style.
Dead End Junction doesn't have any gameplay at all but, to be honest, no one bought this game thinking it would have deep mechanics or complex systems. Its a visual novel. The important things on a visual novel are the story, the characters, and the art direction, and let me say, they are just perfect, and SO different from any other VN I had played. Some people may be a little turn down by the lack of dialogue choices and the sort, but once the story starts pumping up, I garantee you that you would not care ♥♥♥♥ about that. It is like reading a manga or a novel you just can't put down. If a badass story with anime cowboys, plus a little bit of fantasy, sounds intresting to you, chek it out. Also, Inaho best girl. Inaho x Josette best ship.
