Dawngrown is a very basic adventure about healing the world. Its story came across as rather undeveloped and the gameplay itself was tiresome and repetitive. The pixel art is cute, but with the other elements lacking, it is not a title I would recommend. Pros

Charming pixel art
Positive story premise
Cons

Under-developed story that fails to evoke any emotions
Repetitive and boring gameplay

Gameplay & Story
Reading the concept of Dawngrown on the Steam store page, it comes across as rather wholesome, but after playing the game…my opinion differed. You play as a cute frog named Azure. Azure is on a task to cleanse and hydrate the environment. These environments are mimicking the minds of troubled villagers, to rid them of bad thoughts (the dark ooze called corruption). On paper, I like the idea of this wholesome premise, but I found the very little dialogue in the game to be uninteresting. I did not resonate with the humour, nor did it make sense what was going on (only once I went back and re-read the store page description). I felt as if a lot of opportunities were missed to discuss what the dark ooze was symbolising in the different lands. The story came across rather rushed, but this would be passable if the focus was on the gameplay. However, I also found this mediocre. Gameplay consists of using your cleansing gun to slowly eliminate the dark purple spots of corruption. These spots slowly grow back and thus you must act quickly to stop it completely. The gun runs out of fuel quickly and there are only limited refuelling spots to use. After clearing the area of corruption, another gun is used to “paint” the environment, or effectively, hydrate it. This brings the greenery to life, sprouting new plants and also supplies some new fuel for the cleansing gun. All in all, I did not mind the gameplay loop, but the purple corruption can grow very fast, constantly making players run back to a refuelling spot or trying to hydrate areas to get a tiny amount of fuel… and repeat. Its not necessarily difficult, but I found the repetition tedious, not relaxing, which seems to go against its “cozy game” style.
Visuals & Sound
The cute pixel art is Dawngrown’s strongest feature, and it is clear that much effort went into the visuals. The audio is also retro and relaxing, with many quirky sound effects during cleaning.
Conclusion
Dawngrown is a short adventure that is lacking in both its gameplay and story elements. It fits more within the “cozy” games subgenre, but its uninspired and tedious gameplay loop left me feeling tired, not relaxed. There are many good ideas here, and I appreciate the meaning behind the story, but its not a game I can recommend. dawngrowth feels like a couple interesting ideas thrown together in a very short span of time without much deliberation put into shaping them into something fun or engaging. it clearly wears aspirations of being a cute wholesome comfy game about emotions but it falls short of evoking anything in me beyond it being nice to look at. there's not much to see here and what is here is fairly rough. i'll say again that the game looks nice, the pixel art is competently crafted and the character designs and world are adorable at but it feels vaguely cynical how shallow every other aspect of dawngrowth is. the character writing is at best inoffensive but at times feels almost desperate and vaguely cloying. the whole story feels like it was adapted directly from a one page rough draft. the most important aspect of a cozy game like this is endearing a player to the world and characters and dawngrowth seems like it makes a token effort but utterly fails. the gameplay alternates between clearing areas of corruption and then "painting" over the whole level screen with a separate tool. it's simple and promising gameplay at the start but levels quickly become tedious as options are introduced but then strangely taken away making the whole experience a chore. the screen painting is profoundly annoying to do with a controller. i switched over to using mouse and keyboard for those segments but neither set of controls feels quite right for playing the whole game. i want to stress that the problems with this game are not that it's small, i love a lot of small games that put all their effort into a handful of ideas. dawngrowth is trying to do slightly too many things for its very short length and as such fails to develop any of of its ideas much at all. it leads to an unfocused experience.
If you are looking for a game with a beautiful structure in pixel art, good game play music, with an original concept, this game is for you. As well as, if you are one of those who want to support new developers and be part of their projects, I recommend it. Now if you are looking for something where you can immerse yourself and explore how to exploit the game's potential, I don't recommend it, as it is a game that looks really cute and short, but the game play feels unfortunately rather lacking in some cases. Overall, play the game and enjoy the short adventure of a Froggy who wants to clean the world from corruption!
Short and cute. Hugi's debut game on steam was a good one. great graphics, music, and gameplay loop that'll make you joyous. Great work to the entire team!
Really cute little game! The corruption gets quite intense!
I love this game. I have bought it for the Steam Deck and its very relaxing. What amazed me and i liked: - 16:10 support - healing nature using touchscreen However, what I did not liked its that it use a lot of power, at 100% i have 3 hours left. And before you say Deck is the issue, games like Stardew Valley can last 7 hours. Just wanted to say it. All in all its a great game.
A short story about a frog that can not only heal the environment. Pros: -unique mechanics -various weapons - Good pixel art and sound design -nice story twist Cons: -no overview of the controls (keyboard&mouse; controller) -not enough info about the characters
Been having a lot of fun with this game. I love the little sound effects when cleaning the corruption. The music is delightful and it's kind of relaxing to clear the corruption and restore the land. This is a good game to play when you need a change of pace. Definitely belongs in the cozy games genre
I actually liked playing this game, its so charming and chill, but its just way too short. Please add more content to Dawngrown. 6 dollars for less than 2 hours of gameplay?
