The premise sounded good. However, no speed control and near 90 degree corners littered with obstacles. I didn't play long enough to know if they are random or not but I believe there is a random seed at the start. Why? lol is windy curves with obstacles and no brakes not enough? Maybe how about later in the game or at an advanced difficulty, but at the start? Seriously? Do you want to sell your game or be peppered with refunds?
PROS
+Easy to control, hard to master +Nice and clean graphics +Good price
CONS
-It might become repetitive due to few contents
SHORT REVIEW
DriftForce is an endless run game with drones. I recommend it for its gameplay, which is challenging and fast-paced, the good looking graphics and the low price.
GAMEPLAY
The main objective is to earn as many points as possible during the run. Points are awarded by traveled distance, boost usage (which will make avoiding obstacles harder due to the faster speed), drifting at "drift walls" and by collecting orbs that grant extra points, boost, and extra lives. The gameplay is the "easy to control, hard to master" kind so reaching advanced stages and the top of the leaderboards will take time and practice, mostly on randomly generated tracks. GAME MODES The game provides different modes where the objective is the same which is earning as many points as possible before running out of lives, what changes in the different modes is the shape of the track and some minor differences to the rules. The main modes are the Normal Mode that comes with 6 fixed seeds tracks and the Random Mode which comes, like the other modes, with random seeds tracks. The others are the Track Mode which is a harder version of the Random Mode where there's just one life at the start, the Block Mode, set on a track full of boxes that need to be avoided, the Space Mode which has winded tracks with obstacles and finally the Narrow Mode which was added in the Update 1 and is set on a single lane track without protecting sides walls where the player must try to not fall. CONTROLS The game can be played with keyboard, controller and mouse. The drone drives well and controls are reactive without input lag. There are the classic steering and the strafe: using both of them will allow the player to drift: this technique is useful since can grant the player extra points at drift walls: at these walls, the player has to scratch the external rear angle of the drone against the wall to earn points. There's also boost that, if used for a long period of time, can give extra points. DIFFICULTY As I said before, this is the classic "easy to control, hard to master" game, indeed, controls are few and avoid walls is fairly simple at the first stages but, further, in the run, the speed will increase as well as the number of obstacles placed on the track. These obstacles are sometimes very close between them so the player will need lightning reaction times; on fixed seeds tracks, practice will help the player to remember where the obstacles are placed but with random seeds, success is all about reflexes. The game offers leaderboards for all the game modes. CONTENT There are three drones, one available since the start and two unlockables by completing some objectives; customization is limited to primary and secondary color change. There are several game modes; tracks are 6 with fixed seed in normal mode and all the others have random ones; those tracks are very similar between them and, if having familiar tracks can help, on the other hand, repetitiveness might bring to bore; this depends on the player's tastes.
TECHNICAL SIDE
TEST PC CPU: Intel i5 6400 GPU: AMD Radeon RX380 4GB RAM: 8GB GRAPHICS AND PERFORMANCE DriftForce runs on Unreal Engine 4. Graphically is clean and visibility is high; drones details are good as well as flames, water trails and particle effects. What really stands out graphically are the locations which are very suggestive and eye catching; they vary between stages, from plains with huge futuristic buildings to arctic zones, deserts, etc... Performances revealed great: the test PC ran the game at high settings without any frame drop or stutter. There are also different video options to make the game run at his best. SOUNDS The game doesn't have many sounds; the effects are minimal but nice to hear. The soundtrack is relaxing (quite the opposite of the game's pace) and, with the backgrounds, creates a very evocative setting. BUGS I haven't found any bug or crash during my test. PRICE The game is sold at 3,99€ which is very good for the content it brings. Thanks to this price, the game can be recommended to everyone: newcomers will be able to try a game without risking lots of money meanwhile the fans of this genre will find a challenging experience. CONCLUSIONS DriftForce is a good game: funny, frenetic and challenging; graphically is very nice and clean, the soundtrack is evocative and the price is low. Unfortunately, the limited content might bring to prematurely stop playing it but for all the players that love to improve their scores in videogames, this is the right game. Excellent production value, the game looks and runs amazing. The controls would have been great for normal racing, but they're horrible for high speed obstacle avoidance ... which is the core gameplay of DriftForce. The inertia makes it hard to deal with blind corners peppered with random obstacle. Tighter controls with more nimble steering and this could have been fun.
This game's pretty neat. It's not a full-fledged racer with AI opponents and weapons or anything, but $5 really isn't asking a lot for what you get here. It's a pretty solid endless runner that, while not having much to offer, has some great core mechanics. The controls in particular are really good, they're responsive and fluid and it feels great to dance around obstacles and grind along walls at breakneck speeds. It's also a really pretty game to look at; like RadPanda said, this game looks like straight up sex on a 144hz monitor. While I can't see myself playing this for hours and hours at a time, it's a ton of fun in short bursts and ends up being a great way to kill a bit of time. No game-breaking bugs or crummy presentation here; DriftForce is a polished, well-made, and fairly priced indie game. I'd love to see a few new game modes or mechanics in future updates, maybe along with just a tad more track variation, but the game is already definitely in a state where it's easy to recommend. If you're a fan of anti-grav racers and endless runners, this game's for you.
This game wants you to go fast, but it doesn't let you. This game plays like a discount Redout, minus vertical tilting. It has a great sense of speed and style, the boost feels great and vehicles control great, if you are already used to using both analog sticks to pilot. Collecting the pickups feels great if you manage to tightly swerve through a dangerous obstacle. Except many times you don't, and you sit there waiting for 3 slow seconds to respawn, to retry. This game feels like it should be all about speed, there's a boost but it does not increase your score if you use it. Going faster is not beneficial, going longer is (you have easier opportunities for score pickups). In fact, going faster is detrimental because dodging some obstacles (looking at you, circular thingy right at the entrance of a tunnel) becomes prohibitively difficult. Energy walls are awesome, they feel great but feel too short, and once they end, it's easy to strafe into an obstacle as it ends. I would have had a more enjoyable time if: - Obstacles were more sparse (at certain angles you cannot drive through them, and there's nothing you can do about it except crash) - Obstacles had more distance between them along the track - Boosting felt more beneficial - Respawning was quicker
A small endless race game with several different level types for a price that is more than fair. The graphics are really enjoyable and smooth. The races are fun yet very challenging, and since there is more than just one map it's quite varied and doesn't get boring. Just turn on some smooth synthwave, lay back with your controller and play.
Atrocious controls combined with randomly-placed, white obstacles (on a white racing track) and no brakes makes for a very frustrating experience. Since everything is the same color palette, there's no contrast and obstacles blend in until it's way too late, and the vehicle absolutely refuses to steer. It's like playing Wipeout, but the vehicle has no steering wheel, and you just got flashbanged.
Controls are not really that great, but visuals are nice and music is pretty dope. However the game has not been updated with any new content at all since it came out. Only 3 drones (ships) and map seeds looks so much alike. For the price is pretty nice. Just can't recommend it since it has not had any updates at all
