its all right, not the best in the long term
Darkzan Adventure is a strange little free RPG that mixes arcade combat, auto battling and idle progression into one very simple package. I play through a medieval world while fighting the cult of Darkzan, collecting characters and dealing with random events along the way. I can play normally with my character and AI controlled allies, or let the idle mode handle the fighting while I come back later for the rewards. I like the basic idea because it gives me something active to do when I want to play, but it also lets me step away when I am not in the mood to constantly control everything. The combat is fairly straightforward. My characters have their own abilities and attacks, and positioning matters because I can move around the battlefield while their attacks happen automatically. I am mostly trying to stay in a useful position, avoid danger and make the most of the abilities available to me. Special skills give me something to actively manage, while the auto attacking keeps the combat from becoming too demanding. It is a nice middle ground for me, although it does mean the actual fighting is not especially deep. I like the amount of characters and progression packed into the game. There are dozens of characters with different abilities, and I can build a team around the ones I have unlocked. Random events can also throw different situations at me, including enemy groups, travellers and merchants. The collectible side gives me a reason to keep playing because I am not only trying to survive the next encounter. I am also gradually building up a larger selection of characters and improving the options I have available. The idle mode is probably the feature that makes the game easiest for me to come back to. I can let the heroes fight on their own and return later to collect what they earned. I do not think this is as satisfying as the active combat, but it fits the game well and makes progression feel less demanding. There is also online co op and local shared screen play, which gives me another way to approach the game instead of keeping everything completely solo. The fact that the main game is free also makes the simple design much easier for me to accept. The biggest problem for me is that the combat does not have enough depth to carry the whole experience by itself. Once I understand how the characters and abilities work, I am mostly moving around while their attacks handle a lot of the actual fighting. The roguelike elements and random events help, but I still end up repeating similar encounters quite often. I can see myself enjoying it more in short sessions than sitting down for a long uninterrupted play session, because the simple combat starts to lose some of its impact after a while. I also think the free to play structure is worth mentioning because there is a lot of optional paid content built around the game. There are character DLC packs and a supporter pack, while the main game itself remains free. I do like that I can get into the core experience without paying, but the extra characters being sold separately makes the collection side feel less complete than it could. The frequent updates and new maps are a positive though, and the game has continued adding free content such as the Frozen Cave and Magma Cave, which gives me more reasons to check back in. Overall, Darkzan Adventure is a fun little free RPG that works best when I want something casual and easy to pick up. I like the character collecting, simple combat, random events, idle mode and the ability to play with other people. The biggest issue is that the actual gameplay is quite shallow once I understand the basic systems, and the paid character content makes the progression feel a little less complete. Still, there is enough variety and personality here for me to enjoy it in shorter sessions, especially when I can switch between actively playing and letting the game progress on its own. Rating: 7.4/10
