Deep in the twilight of the Black Forest, you and your companions crouch before the robber-knight's tower. Hans, the alchemist, places his mysterious potion by the door. Ebhard the friar implores Saint Dunstan to bless your weapons and armor. And you and Gretchen grip naked long swords, praying your plate mail won't squeak.

C'mon,we need a remake!
I used to play this way back in the day with my boi, Meatball Mike. Darklands is a massive, unapologetically complex Ultima-like that rewards patience and curiosity. At first, it’s overwhelming to the point of intimidation - the kind of game where the manual isn’t optional, it’s essential. But once you push through that barrier, you’re dropped into a surprisingly deep and open-ended sandbox, especially for its time. The world feels huge, alive, and full of possibilities, letting you carve your own path through a gritty, myth-soaked version of medieval Germany. It’s dense, a bit daunting, and very much a product of its era, but that’s also its charm. Somehow, it's ultimate medieval German-ness made me crave jägerschnitzel, currywurst, and spätzle - and while I know that may make me appear ignorant and racist, I can't deny what my tummy wants.
Been trying to install the game. Keep getting a disk write error after game download. Any help would be appreciated.
It was a deep masterpiece of it's times and still hold it's ground vs anything we have seen in the genre in recent years. You need patience as the game does not hold your hand. You are a German citizen in medieval Germany: what they believed is how their world actually is, literally The Character creation is as deep as it gets, with education, profession, and even aging. nothing ever came close. The graphic has not aged well and it was no "state of the art" even in 1992, but you don't play for the visuals, even back then. Keep the key codes at hand: the old copy protection is a nasty one. Play this game and immerse yourself: the technical limitation will suddenly fade away and you will find yourself deeply involved in a great epic story.
One of the best games from my childhood. Amazing character creation with a decent battle system and intriguing choices throughout.
