Woof! Woof! :(
I'm not really sure if D3D INSIDE is an asset flip. Some elements of this game certainly make it seem like the developer put some effort into assembling some kind of original here. On the other hand, a lot of the game assets don't seem like they were created by the developer, but they haven't credited any asset creators for supplying assets, which might be a case of plagiarism. There's no evidence, so we need to give the benefit of the doubt... regardless, asset flip or not, the quality here is indistinguishable from many asset flip/cash grab scams, and that's a problem in itself. This is a basic low poly/minimalist FPS game with no value whatsoever from gamers from a Russian developer with questionable ethical behaviour. You just run around a lot poly environment and shoot red demon asset things... that's all there is to this. Wolfenstein 3D has significantly greater depth than this... there's nothing of value for gamers here. Taking this shovelware seriously as if it was a genuine attempt to make a game, it doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The game features lazy minimalist/untextured low-polygon "retro" assets and visuals, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the early 1990s. The lack of textures is a method that lazy devs often use to disguise their lack of talent/interest in doing the graphics properly and trying to disguise it under the name of "art", or "We made it look bad on purpose", which really isn't something gamers should have to put up with. It's unclear why the developers weren't willing to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets and high resolution textures for the game. It looks bad as a result of their decisions, and that's just another reason to avoid it. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 5 players, and the worst part is these weren't genuine players, these were the Russian fake review accounts that the developer paid to make the fake reviews. Since the fake reviews are all done, now the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. They're all written in either Russian or broken English, appear at almost exactly the same time, very shortly after the game launched on Steam, all have a direct Steam purchase of the game, and the accounts are used consistently to write fake reviews for asset flips and other cash grabs/scams. The "Positive" review score on this game should be disregarded due to this blatant, unethical review manipulation. This is done to deceive and scam gamers into paying for a bad product. D3D INSIDE has the almost comically optimistic (if it wasn't so sad) price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the unethical nature of the developer. Remember that if you buy a game from an unethical developer, you're putting your money at risk. This is also competing with over 9,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
Unfortunate proof that the latest version isn't always the best. D3D INSIDE is a sort of remake of DED INSIDE: taking the very simple top-down adventure game and translating it into a 3D twin-stick shooter. The original struggles to feel worth the price of admission but was at least basic, inoffensive and felt competent, something akin to a flash game from the mid 00's. Here a lot of the jank and overlying issues of the first really come home to roost and the ambitions turn out for the worse. Starting with the good: it does have more content to it than the original. Aside from the secret extra boss and ending the world map has been split up and some extra bosses and side quests added. It's roughly doubled the content of the original but that doesn't say very much. The graphics and sound are fine, the previews give a thorough rundown of what to expect with an electronica soundtrack that was definitely picked because it was available over anything else. The graphical style is fine but very repetitive, as in the original you might get a little lost once or twice simply because of how samey everything looks despite the relatively small world map. So in terms of aesthetics it's fine but some extra models and audio tracks would've been nice to keep things fresh, on top of maybe finally giving enemies a hurt sound. The game suffers from a pretty dismal economy: the original showered you in cash to the point of which any degree of intentional grinding would see you set for the entire game. It seems this was noted and greatly over-tuned: money left in the open no longer respawns (except for a few very specific and arbitrary cases) which in of itself wouldn't be a huge issue were it not for the multiple downgrades you suffer from the original: pickups give less ammo, health is more expensive and enemies only sometimes drop coins. Coupled with the fact there's still no reliable way to tell how many shots any given enemy takes and the addition of new tank-type foes who just exist to soak up ammo and it becomes a slog. What this all amounts to is that the majority of the game is spent scrounging for coins and ammo while trying to waste as little as possible so you can buy the expensive item necessary for progression. Due to this all the side quests go from just that to basically mandatory. Boss fights don't fare much better as they're generally just large, static enemies who will fling huge patterns of bullets at you with very little clear pattern or indication. As such most of these end up feeling more like slugfests where you hope you brought enough ammo as most of these bosses take 150-200 units of ammo to deal with. Though this is also where the difficulty falls apart, I found when I tried to go to the third area of the map to get the last cash I needed for health only to find there was no third area and I'd walked into an optional boss: death isn't really punished, and to be fair, how could they? With so few resources or progress points they could threaten to take from the player so instead you get a slap on the wrist, then topped up with 100 units of ammo and health and sent back in with all progress intact. This was probably my breaking point for the game: why bother playing it as intended if you can just mash your face against enemies, never buy items then use the money saved so you can face bosses with so much health you can just stand still and hold M1 until they're gone? The main gameplay loop isn't rewarding enough to make gathering resources anything but tedious and annoying and even with side quests it's a challenge to balance your cash. This is more thought than an hour-long game deserves so long and short: you can afford to miss this one. I sincerely hope the sequel improved things.
Fun, small and interesting indie game that worths to be bought when it's on sale. It's better than I thought!
