Just did a part of the tour. this is where VR shines. It is as if you have the museum to yourself and can view everything in peace and quiet without crowds of annoying people :P Very detailed with models, videos, narration, i would recommend it.
Update: I've talked at length with the developer of this experience and he is committed to improving and fixing the various issues reported. I'm happy to say that LOD issue and quality issues have been mitigated. For now, I'll leave my original review unedited, but please know that improvements have been made. The good: The highlight for me was definitely the recreation of the Mulberry harbor, as it really puts into perspective the scope of both the invasion, manpower, equipment, etc. It was very impressive and the reason why I'm recommended this (with caveats). The bad: This is an early access experience and it shows. I played on a Quest 3 via Virtual Desktop on a pretty beefy computer and I ran into some performance issues. Also, the various assets are mediocre quality. I also experienced pretty annoying LOD issues which prevented clarity on certain assets unless looking directly at the object. The ugly: Pronunciation of French words made my skin crawl. Lastly, the uniforms and equipment for the US soldiers are wrong or incomplete. I'm familiar with the US equipment, but not Canadian, UK, or German so I'm unsure if that is correct or not. Overall: I want experiences like this to succeed, but I would suggest waiting on this one a little bit longer before buying, unless you want to see that sweet sweet Mullberry. After all, it's logistics that wins wars. Recommendation: My suggestion for the developer would be to focus next efforts on scenes and content that show the scope of the invasion, as that can really only been done in VR. Like the number of number of boats, number of casualties, number of planes. Put all of the boats on a virtual ocean, let me see them! Most of the content can be experienced in a normal museum, bring the scope of the invasion to life.
Experienced on the Meta Quest 3
You can view my gameplay & early impressions here: https://youtu.be/pao04T5__Og Like Switzerland, this is a neutral recommendation. I was enjoying this historical / educational experience about the Normandy Invasion by the Allied Forces in World War 2. Unfortunately, I experienced a serious crash during my gameplay. I don't know how common the crash is, but it does give me pause in recommending the app. I would say if you're interested in this app, then wait for a patch. There's original videos from WW2 included. Along with 360 stereoscopic photos of locations in France during the Allied Invasion. There's lots of audio tidbits (from AI voices) and 3D props. There's a lot of very interesting information. Several things that I learned that I hadn't known before. App is running on the Godot Engine. For the most part, I was getting 90 fps. However, it did drop at various times to 60 fps. So the app could be better optimized. There's also several loading screens. You have full locomotion and smooth and snap turning available. I did not like the UI at all, it was very clunky to navigate. Rate ?/10.
Please note: I received a free Steam key through the Steam Curator Connect program.
I bought this when it launched into Early Access. had a little look around as was impressed but then kinda forgot about it apart from seeing the odd update. And now out the blue we have 1.0 release and judging from the trailer it looks like it has got loads better. So I cannot wait to put on my quest 3 and dive in again and see all the new stuff. And with this game I won't break my bedside monitor like I did with Crossings VR yesterday. New monitor arriving today had better be careful. Play this instead. Still think the british should have been the core of the game as 3 out 5 beaches were British lead and the whole operation was British lead and would not have been possible without the Royal Navy and RAF. But I'm guessing Americans made it.
Awesome VR museum. I love it.
VR is a powerful learning tool and this title demonstrates why. Detailed models of sites, equipment, guns, 3d scans of tanks, images, animation, video, audio make this the riches D Day experience you could hope to have.
Amazing well done and beyond highly recommended. By far the best historical and war VR experience . History should not forget what these men give give to the world.
I love these kind of showcases for VR. It's a great way to take advantage of the medium. It's so nice to feel like you have a whole museum to yourself and can explore at your own pace. The dev is also adding some set pieces which take you to actual locations or put you in the shoes of soldiers for a brief segment of a mission. A fantastic use for VR that anyone who enjoys history, especially the WW2 era, should try. Even just looking up close as the models is fun, but narration and trivia really add to the experience if you want to learn more. If you're on the fence, give the demo a try, it's free!
