D.A.M Champion is a pretty good Monster Tamer game (AKA a Pokelike) good monster designs, Snappy dialogue for this type of game and it's open world! Con: The game is difficult at times (You may get jumped by a gang of angry cheeseburger turtles)!
I like the monster designs in the game and the game is challenging. Music is good
For the time I have played this game, let me first say whether or not I’d recommend it…. Simple answer is yes. It is a fun title (I did receive for free, just want to be transparent) but even then, I would’ve payed the 9.99. The monster designs are cool, the music is actually pretty nice and the story can definitely get a laugh out of you and can get into the more adult side of life topics. If you are looking for a fun and simple enough monster tamer, I’d give this game a shot!
This game is an acquired taste, but if it fits your taste, its 100% worth a play. As someone who enjoyed Pokemon Wack, this game felt like it was right up my alley. Since the game was made by a single person and its also their first game, it needs to be treated as such. Basically, just keep your expectations low and you will be surprised. This game wears its Pokemon inspiration on its sleeve. It is clearly a passion project of someone who enjoys the older Pokemon games and wanted to make their own take on the genre. There are a number of points that separate this from a typical monster tamer. Those main selling points seem to be as follows: - Open world: While nice to explore at my own pace, the game still felt extremely linear due to the level scaling of each location. At times I also felt unsure of where I was supposed to go due to the lack of direction. - EV & Nature Improvements: These are great, you can buy cheap items that attach to your monsters that function just like pokemon natures/held items allowing for easy customizability to your team. The EVs also arent based on the type of monster you kill and can be allocated towards the stat of your choosing. - Capture system: To unlock new monsters for your team you need to defeat 10 of them in battle and then find the shop where you can exchange for that monster. This took a bit of time to get used to, but it was extremely convenient in the late game. The biggest issue with it is for capturing rare encounters. Instead of needing to find 1 rare encounter at a 5% chance, you would need to find 10 in order to unlock it (and find that its relatively common at some other locations). - Darker Story: The story here is really awful, but luckily its not relevant and can be skipped entirely. The dialogue tries to go for a dark humor vibe, but its really cringe and dark humor isn't for everyone. The game doesn't feel any more mature than a pokemon game, but alienates a potential younger audience by having those dark themes. Maybe someone else can appreciate the jokes more than me though. Now for some other pros and cons Pros: - All monsters are viable: You can pretty much throw a team together with anything you think is cute and run through the game with it. - Optional trainer battles: The large majority of trainers on routes are completely optional. This is a great decision as it allows you to skip them entirely if you are already ahead or grind at your own pace. - Convenience options: There is a battle animation skip, instant dialogue, and an auto run feature in the settings. All of these make the game so much smoother. - Few to no bugs: This game is really well polished. There were 2 softlocks I experienced from specific scenarios, both of which got patched out within a couple hours. - Reasonable pricepoint: A full price of $10 seems completely reasonable for this game. It took me 6 hours to beat the game and I was practically speedrunning it with autorun, animations off, and skipping most dialogue. Theres even a battle tower in the end game that I havent attempted. Cons: - Lack of difficulty/Simplistic battles: I beat all battles without ever clicking a status move, planning synergies, using healing items, or utilizing abilities. Just raw damage moves was more than enough. There also isnt a special battle mechanic that makes the game unique. Its all 3v3, but theres no swapping or backups. Its also very easy to overlevel since the exp gains are static. The late game battles do get a bit harder, but I only lost a couple times in the whole run. - Lack of visual clarity: A lot of information in this game is either hard to access, or not accessible at all. I was never able to find any indication of whether my moves were using special attack or physical attack. I also couldnt rearrange my moves in battle to have moves I wanted towards the top. *A patch came out which now displays which attack stat is used on attacks - Small endgame roster: Despite boasting a 120 monster roster, the game only has 41 fully evolved monsters. Nearly every single line is a 3 stage evolution. This seems like a weird choice as most preevos dont mean much and it makes building teams harder as there are really limited options for each type. - Punishing routes: The routes in this game are very small, but the encounter rate feels like its even higher than Pokemon. even worse, repels only decrease this chance by 50% and are not efficient to use. Worse than that though, is the MP system used in combat. Its a great system to help balance harder battles, but the fact it doesn't recover after battles makes it so you have to go heal after every couple battles or wait 5 turns to recover it fully. *A patch has decreased the encounter rate and MP cost of attack moves Well thats the most of it. Despite the cons I think this is a worthwhile game to play. It has a charm to it thats hard to explain. The simpler battles allow for almost a relaxing experience while still playing a monster battler. If it sounds like you would enjoy it, I would absolutely give it a try!
Really fun game, watched a youtube video of this randomly, and havent been disappointed
I would definitely recommend this to players that don't focus too much on expensive visuals. This game is very simple and yet still enjoyable. It was not created by a pro or veteran developer. If you just want an enjoyable game and a feeling of nostalgia then this game might be perfect. Pros: Great monster designs, entertaining dialogue, provides a healthy challenge, the music is good, I also feel like the game gives me more freedom as a player compared to other creature collector RPG games. Cons: Not a AAA budget game
A light hearted Creature tamer light, made by a very passionate dev. Some of the jokes in the game made me crack and its clearly very self aware of that. I can feel its a bit open ended specially with some of the most difficult fights. Im impressed by the amount of creaturers and unique designs and the dev actively listens to feedback and applies changes. I did not engage further with the game than a couple of towns but I can see some traits of having a good dev for the game. Try it is fun and entertaining.
This game alright.
~Gameplay~
If you think of as another Pokemon game on RPG maker that's what it essentially is. Plays like a RPG maker in how you battle where you can hold down/ mash the OK button mindlessly for attacking and use another skill called 'wait' just to recover your MP but back to mashing again. It plays like a ROM hack version of pokemon where things have been modified on the surface but deep down nothing feels new. The problem is that this game ties it's likeness to an preexisting I.P. which it's hard not to make any comparisons to it or everyone who sent or sending me (personally) pokemon like games. while I was playing the game live I felt I was being backseatted by a stan who really wanted me to like the game. Usually it's the developers of the game that does that to me while im playing live and I was being told on how good this is"better that Gen 1 pokemon like beedrill."
(really anything can be better than Gen 1 which was made long ago. Hopeful dev or dev team that wasn't you in the video trying to hype up this game.)
The mons ( a short word for monsters) evolve like Pokemon do but they do it off screen and there's no pay off you just open your menu and you see it's bigger all of a sudden.
~ART~
The art direction is inconsistent as the mons and the people and sprites you can tell comes from 3 different places or packs and nothing look thematic to the game nothing really says 'Digital Advanced' but it does say mons.
~Dialog~
The dialogue of some characters is very meme like, It ages itself with words like "Vibe check" and "F.A.A.F.O." "handing out L"etc that is a writing faux pas in many circles. I wouldn't consider it part of the "dark humor" either just a product of it's time.
~MISC~
Personally I'm not a fan of the RPG maker XP or below MV games because it really messes with my monitors resolutions and OBS. Maybe this is the dev's first game (or teams) but there a lot of alternatives that cost less or free and play the same, I would consider buying this to just help the dev put development towards their next game if they don't have a crowd funding site. What's good about the game - The monsters look cool https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_4sWTKcA_E
D.A.M Champions is a solid mon tamer with a unique capture mechanic and comedic spin on usual mon formula. I enjoyed that that it was non-linear and you could tackle the bosses in any order you chose and there is two possible endings that depend on what choices you've made throughout your journey. My only nitpick is that when it comes to selecting attack, you have to scroll through a list and you can't rearrange moves accordingly for ease of access. Other then that though, it's definitely worth playing if you want a short but chill monster tamer.
This game was a great little game almost played the whole thing in one stream! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqWnIny_2-Q
