I really wasn't sure how to rate this one. I completed the game - so obviously it wasn't terrible. But, I'm not sure I'd tell my friends to play this over the RE2 or RE4 remakes. Positives include solid gun play (better on Steam Deck than PC, the M+K implementation felt off), some solid "hub and spoke" level design (go find the 3 keys and bring them all back), and an interesting mechanism (your health = your ammo). But, it definitely has some negatives. A lot of the puzzles turned out to be mathy/spatial puzzles instead of using items you find in the environment to piece it together. There are VERY few enemies in the game (I think 5), so you will run out of variety very quickly. The land mines (chapter 2) and turrets (chapter 3) are incredibly annoying. It also has maybe the worst story/dialogue/voice acting I've heard in a long time. This is a very solid game, but it doesn't do anything new and I recommend you play Signalis or any Resident Evil game first.
If this game wasn't so genuinely awful to play it might be worth playing for the art and atmosphere, which are top tier. But unfortunately the gameplay is genuinely terrible. The gunplay is genuinely some of the worst I have ever experienced. Wether youre using aim assist on a controller, or a mouse and keyboard, nothing can prepare you for the genuine horror of trying to shoot an enemy in this game. The crosshair is wider than the pacific ocean and enemies lurch and jerk around so fast, and aiming movement is so slow, that putting a bullet where you want is like some arcane ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sorcery. I dont know if thats on purpose to try and get you to play this like a survival horror game, but if that was the intent it failed miserably, because even in a Resi game they know to make the guns feel powerful and enjoyable to use, even if you only get a handful of ammo. Love the look of this game, hate pretty much everything else about it.
I gave this game close to the 2 hour limit to impress before refunding, it didn't. The visuals were very good, but that's about it. The gun play felt horrible, like it was trying to implement the Dead Space dismemberment system, but poorly done. It was like trying to cut down a redwood with 22 short ammo, where it could take magazines to kill a single enemy and if there were more than one, you just had to run or die. The game was not fight or flight, it was just flight or flight (faster-ish), And this was on normal/medium. Then came the VA & dialog. The young girl just grated the wrong way on my ears and who ever wrote her dialog really missed the mark, it was like a "how do you do, fellow children?" kind of bad. And not in the fun kind of way to the point that I wish I could skip ALL dialog involving her. The fun just wasn't there and what was there, wasn't enough to keep me wanting to play.
Interesting idea weighed down by its own flaws, including: 1) Ridiculous amounts of padding - every single story chapter has a mandatory ´´find three/four X or Y´´ which kills immersion, especially with the already slow-paced gameplay 2) Abysmal voice acting - the vast majority of English VAs are at best unconvincing and at worst actively grating on the ears...the worst offender being the primary supporting character, which makes it even worse (and many of her lines are eyeroll-worthy) 3) Very little enemy variety even well over halfway in 4) No music whatsoever 5) Highly underwhelming unlockable character perks The game does have some good parts, like some of the level visuals and the idea of using blood/HP as ammunition for your guns. In terms of exploration it is a fairly typical RE-esque experience, except the inability to revisit previously explored locations. The in-game puzzles range from okay to tedious, which only further help kill the pacing altogether. The story feels rather basic and does not really surprise with anything. All in all, with a bit more polish, improved ambiance and better character writing (and VAs) this could have been a solid game. As is however feels more like a slog to get through. Only play if you are highly patient.
How can I give this a negative review when I enjoyed it enough to finish it? Well it's either a thumbs up or down, so down. Wait for a sale, don't believe the hype. Despite enjoying the gunplay and the game enough, the actual gameplay is from the early 2000s, it feels very dated. Sure there are elements of survival horror but barely. Most of the voice acting is terrible. Once you've played an hour or two you've seen most of what the game has to offer. The environments change but it all feels samey. Oh and the puzzles are atrocious, blergh! This is no where near the RE games. Wait for the price to come down
10/10 recomendando
