You play the role of a school girl turned electrician while fumbling around in the dark and barely looking up from your map screen, except to count which exit you're taking, in this water downed Clock tower clone. Sometimes, a dog, robed man or a tentacle rid shovel wielding miner chases you and you either chuck ♥♥♥♥ at them, hide or blatantly run into them then slam the A button because they're blocking your path and you can't be ♥♥♥♥♥♥ backtracking. Multiple endings exist that do nothing to help the clichéd and unclear narrative. But I love this ♥♥♥♥, so will keep playing in 30 min stints until I can figure out how to unlock 100% notes achievement. (After clocking this game I'd recommend using a walkthrough to unlock the addditional endings as it was ridiculously bu££$hit and unfair to find.) Not a bad port, but not a good one. Slight jarring and freezing at times on my PC. The invetory is awkward as fu(k to use, obviously intended for the Nintendo DS stylus. Five twelths of the screen is used for map, inventory (so on and so forht), five twelths of the screen for navigating your character through the maze and two twelths of the screen is reserved for black bars that hold no purpose. Why the ♥♥♥♥ does anyone need to crouch or sneak in this game ever?
The audio quality is bad. The resolution is capped at 1080p. The framerate is capped at 30 fps. It's an obvious DS port showing both the top and bottom screen at once. I lost 13 minutes of progress in the first chase, I died offscreen somehow due to a bug. No atmosphere is established due to the audio quality, it's just not worth bothering at all.
Mom can we have clock tower ? No there is clock tower at home Clock tower at home : I really enjoy my time with this game actually, it's a short game with exploration and multiple ending. Sadly the port is really bare bones, they don't even bother change how the screen look.
For Intro/Plot Spoilers/Thoughts on everything else: https://backloggd.com/u/gamemast15r/review/3750643/ The gameplay for Creeping Terror is again very Clock Tower adjacent: you’ll play as Arisa as you have to manage your health/stamina, your flashlight battery and inventory spaces as you run, hide and throw objects at stalker chasers throughout the mansion and hospital. When you run into a stalker, they’ll chase you down and attempt to kill you of course, which you can escape from if you go to one of many different hiding spots without them being five feet within reach. If you run into them you’ll need to mash the A button quickly to escape and temporarily stun them while you run in whichever direction that you need to but at the cost of your health/stamina, which will go down only when you’re being chased. If you have a rock or a plank of wood, you can throw it at the Shovel Man and the Robed Man to stun them, or if you have a bone then you can throw it when the dog is around to distract them as you run away. Other pickups include rations and phone chargers, which heal you and charge up your flashlight battery respectively, and you have about six inventory slots to manage. Let me tell you now that it sounds scary to deal with but it’s really not, starting with the flashlight battery. I’ll tell you now that I NEVER needed to worry about it because they give you A LOT of drops throughout all of your areas and describe the objectives enough to where I never really felt like I got lost. Also the game is so well lit that in all honesty the flashlight is only really useful for making sure Arisa doesn’t bump into or trip over rocks, which I’ll be honest I did A LOT as again I forgot about the flashlight’s existence. As a result I was confused during my second play session a week from the previous one where I was looking for a jump button and ironically named this game a “Rock Tripping Simulator”. Basically the flashlight is only useful for making sure Arisa knows not to trip over rocks even though you can clearly see them right in front of her cause she needs a new set of prescription lenses for the non-existent glasses on her non-existent face and by the end I was looking for excuses to use the phone chargers. Throwable items like rocks, planks and bones are infinite because you find them in piles in various areas in the game and as such if you wanted to you can fill your inventory with them and it would be a valid strategy throughout the game. The health items? Again there’s a lot of rations but I would say that this and having a couple of throwables would be the best strategy for when hunters do end up grabbing or tackling you in the case of the dog. The stamina/health bar is one of the most important aspects of the game, as again when a stalker chases you then your stamina goes down. The most annoying part about this is mainly that Arisa’s stamina goes down so quickly that before you even get to the next portion of the screen you’ll hit the bottom. It is essential that you stop JUST before it runs out so that it refills faster and you can use it again quickly if a stalker is almost on you because otherwise you have to WAIT until it refills all the way and sometimes these guys can be pretty quick. That being said, the amount of damage you take doesn’t really matter much unless you’re trying to die for the achievement or you’re unfamiliar with said genre of stalker games. It gives you plenty of ways to navigate around the stalkers depending on where you want to go location wise because it covers the screen with red fog when they’re around and the encounters are structured enough to where once you get them to chase you and they disappear, they don’t come back around again for a while. Puzzle wise there isn’t really much in the way of puzzles other than “explore”, though there are two sections towards the end that I want to address: the elevator and the “final boss”. The elevator is something that I don’t think most people would understand unless they had a guide as you have to ride it six times before heading into the lab which doesn’t feel natural in order to get a key to the safe that unlocks two of the four endings. No clues, nothing really in that manner and it could’ve been at least hinted at for the sake of immersion. The “final boss” is probably the most the game ever gets in difficulty, which amounts to
“lure the Shovel Man between two wires and then throw the switch to shock it four times in a specific order”, though I’ll admit that the final arena had me lost at first.
If I were to sum up my feelings right now, what are they in terms of the gameplay? I’ll say that I was never bothered by the easy difficulty and I had a solid time for the most part but I do feel like they could’ve added more difficulty options for those who don’t want to play “Baby’s first Clock Tower game”. They give you so many resources and light up the game so well that the only real annoyance was trying to manage my stamina while running away from stalkers, having to run and tap repeatedly as it will. Also the controls might be a tad confusing at first, they work fine but keep in mind that X (or Square) is to control the bottom half of the screen (i.e. inventory, documents) while Y (or Triangle) will have you use whatever inventory item you have equipped. I wasted a couple rocks here and there by accident trying to get used to this camera system but once you get used to it, it honestly doesn’t feel bad. Overall the gameplay is fine and has some suspenseful moments but I’d also say that it didn’t “scare” me as much as I’d like it to, though I do feel that the aesthetics and sound design kind of carried the game for me? The release of Creeping Terror, like with the info on how it was developed, would basically have zip in terms of attention with any actual attention from critics basically surmounting to “servicable” and “boring”. As of now in terms of Steam reviews you’ll mainly be getting only a couple of reviews at most despite the intriguing mystery behind the game’s development, and other than that the only thing I was able to find was talk of a Nintendo Switch port called “Creeping Terror Re.” which was supposed to include costumes and an easier difficulty to an already pretty easy game. With crickets in terms of actual exposure, the next question would be what are my thoughts with this game? (Final thoughts in Backlogg'd review, but I thought it was fine as "baby's first Clock Tower game").
Its not a bad game but has a very SNES feel to it. It isn't scary for anyone that regularly plays horror games and the mechanics of the game get old. The story isn't anything special but this game killed a few hours during the covid-19 quarantine so eh, it did its job.
