I like Cosmic Ascension. I recorded some of my progress, complete with relevant commentary as I play it. Please take a look if you like a more Audio / Visual Experience. 👍 https://youtu.be/gIBHEUeMtSU
Get all the TP, & Unlock Obscene Power!
💪 Cosmic Ascension is an Indie, Sci-Fi Action Roguelike offering 2D Space, Arcade Action in the great hunt for TP! Get all the TP, & Unlock Obscene Power! You think I’m kidding? The main Meta Currency is TP (Tech Points). Meta Progression is present in the form of this sweet TP, which you score from enemy kills, and which you use between runs to boost the power of your ships systems. You can also mine TP, blasting it out of dirty space hulks, asteroids, and space debris, acquiring used TP to be repurposed onto your sweet space ride. Mining used TP; the future is just so bleak! But TP is powerful, well worth getting your hands dirty, and reaping the rewards! Increased weapon damage, crit chance, crit damage, armor, useful stuff like that, all used to help ensure a clear sweep through your foul foes! All the other space captains will be so jealous of your tidy and near peerless weapon ports! There are also upgrade modules, which are used to unlock additional ship types, and Artifact crystals you can acquire that grant odd powers. All of which can be purchase with the almighty TP. TP; the currency of the future!
Gameplay Flow
Gameplay wise, think Asteroids, but there are enemies, and other sectors to warp to and collect resources. Or think a less flashy Nova Drift, but tougher, where the battlefield is much bigger, and damage sticks, as You don’t rapidly heal after taking damage. By default, healing is much less common compared to something like Nova Drift, and healing your hull quickly takes a special upgrade, so be careful space commander, you don’t want all your treasured TP to go to waste!
Maneuvering Thrusters Active!
You also have maneuvering thrusters, so you can strafe left and right, as opposed to just having a forward thrust. Meaning, you have much more control over your ship, enabling far more precise control of your craft. Nova Drift doesn’t have that!
Cosmic Ascension Suggestions and Critiques:
While I do like Cosmic Ascension, I did have some thoughts that occurred to me during play, that if implemented, could make the game feel even better, do let me know if you think I’m off-base on any of this.
1. General Movement Feels a bit Slow
The dash is nice, but the general movement outside combat feels slow, maybe a “sprint” or afterburner option to speed your movement, at the cost of energy. Maybe your speed should increase after you clear a sector of hostiles, that way, it is less punishing to get back to a warp point if you wander off in the wrong way.
2. Fill Me Up WormHole! 😋
You should enter each new sector with full energy, as long as you cleared the last sector of enemies. This would remove unnecessary player wait time before the next jump, which some players might feel necessary due to optimization, while still retaining the cost of opportunity of fleeing a sector under fire.
3. Patch Me Up a Bit During the Drive
Maybe the auto repair ability should heal you to full in between warp jumps, as it will heal you to full if you just wait before jumping, but that wastes player time for no real gameplay purpose. :( This will also increase speed of play. Maybe also give a bit of a heal for each sector you clear, representing the time spend repairing between sectors during the jump.
4. Fire The Flares! Engage Point Defense Laser Cannons!
Maybe some flares or point defenses to help handle incoming missiles or gun fire, that would add more granularity and build potential to the gameplay.
5. More Interactable Objects and Features in the Sectors.
I really liked how I could charge my energy from the sun, and how I could harvest the precious TP from asteroids and space debris. More interact-able objects and features like that in the environment would feel great. I wonder: can you scoop energy from gas giants, or many mine planets in the future? Maybe even descending down into the atmosphere, and mine and battle there? Some Ideas for the future maybe Anyway, let’s embark on a Cosmic Ascension adventure! Into space, and into the great hunt for TP! Care to observe my TP fueled space Adventures? Come on, it’ll be fun!
A young Warren Buffet suggested this game to me and I wanted to try it out. It's insanely good, like starship Synthetik. The starships are all support different playstyles. I'm a big fan of the aircraft carrier that lets me summon starfighters because I can't aim for ♥♥♥♥ but they do all of the hard work for me.
At first I thought the game was going to be boring or "just another space shooter" and at first that is what it felt like, But as I played on I quickly found the progression outside of each run to be very enjoyable, giving me motivation to play over and over again because each run I felt a little more powerful and it gave me options to try new ships and new strats. There might be a few minor balancing issues as some of the abilities you can get and level up make the game feel slow, but if you just try and play the game the way you know you are supposed to, you will hardly even notice them, plus if the games gets updates these will smooth out for sure. :) Ether way it's an awesome game that reminds me of Atari's Asteroids, but like, 36 times cooler and more interesting! I recommend for sure! :D
Good replay potential, skinner box mechanics, love it.
First 20min Gameplay here At first, I made a 'first 20 min. gameplay,' but soon realized that to be able to show you something, I had to play a little more. And one thing is for sure: Play the tutorial first to get to know your way around before starting the adventure because it's going to be awesome =) I really didn't think that the game would be that captivating, but I was wrong! You can upgrade your ship, trade 'items,' get different ships, and warp your way around to clear the 'level.' On each stage, you receive upgrades from which you have to choose wisely since it will define whether you pass your next stage or not. - Just don't stay in the minefield when fighting the end boss! You can always warp back (which takes time... which also means you can't warp back if there are enemies, or you'll die:)) It's really more like FTL goes ship hunting and collecting resources. Great game, great replayability since it's a grinding game if you want to beat each Warp level. Thumbs Up!
Fun gameplay, interesting meta progression. The runs themselves don't vary a whole lot, as there aren't many individual strategies with high synergy, so most run-based upgrades just come down to what's the most powerful. Still, quite worth a few dollars and hope to see more games like this or more expanded content.
I r8 8/8, m8
There are a lot of space shooter games out there, and this one is a lot of fun. It's not especially challenging, which is sort of a good thing, as there are a lot of games in this genre that fall into the category of "gets harder and harder until it feels unfair and you die." This one has a winnable campaign instead. Cosmic Ascension is a bit more casual, but still requires some concentration to win. I've only won with the base ship thus far though, so I don't know everything about it. I've only won with the base ship as of this writing, but there's clearly some replay value in the other ship types and other upgrade strategies, so I think this is well worth the price. For some reason it doesn't work properly with my controller, and nothing but the joystick works which is my main criticism, but I found that the classic RPG controls and mouse works best for me anyway. Also, I found some of the weapons are notably better than others, so there is an element of luck in getting access to the right upgrades. This isn't necessarily bad, but it does feel a bit random at times.
