Exploring the (somehow) still untapped potential of the RTS-MOBA landscape, Coregrounds is a step in the right direction and into the inevitable, amazing future - but unfortunately, a subpar product in of itself. While the core gameplay loop hits that sweet spot of frantic, calculated action and micro and macro management of true RTS and the numbers and wide view of a battle arena, it is riddled with problems that make it an interesting indie experiment but not a game to sink your teeth into. Controls are minimal, with the keyboard being largely underutilized; the interface is clunky; the framerate drops to 30 frames per second randomly (and notice this is a 2D game without **any** eyecandy - at all, really); unit and abilities icons are non-expressive so you need to memorize what each one does; the impact of individual minion types on the battlefield is impossible to discern just by looking at it; and the main menu and most screens are crowded and hard to navigate. Coregrounds is a cool experiment in gameplay, but in its current incarnation, not a multiplayer experience that your typical gamer will want to spend tens (let alone thousands) of hours climbing its ladder. The abstract look-and-feel of the main game mode holds it back immensely. Maybe one day the devs will revampt the interface to make it look more like a traditional RTS and the game will be better off for it - not necessarily fancy: even something as basic as something to resemble the first Command and Conquer games would go a long way towards turning this from a concept piece into an actual game that could sustain a large, passionate community around it. Make no mistake: Coregrounds is taking a step into the future of real-time strategy gaming, and it definitely gets what a RTS/MOBA hybrid needs to be to break new ground and make it work. It's just sad that it comes in an abstract and rather hard ot enjoy packaging, as of its initial release. If it can renew itself before others venture into the genre, it'd be a cult hit.

Nice minimalist tower defense with elements of moba.
simple gameplay, but strategic and hard to master. A little confusing to learn at first until you learn the rules and mechanics of this game. Nice to kill time, or to potatoes pc. evaluation note 7/10 In early access, but has potential. What i no liked:

hard to figure what each different minion does and associate with the sprites since the formats and colors are similar.(but maybe this remember difficulty is related to me XD)
the frenetic spawning break a bit the immersion, and at first can passes the impression of no need strategy. I think less spawning but more impactant choices, timing, and location matters like in Clash Royale aspects would be good.
I for one, really enjoy tower defense style games, I was surprised to see a game quite like this released free. Its pretty neat and I would recommend any fans of the tower defense genre check it out, it puts a unique spin on things with the inclusion of MOBA elements in its design. The game is currently in early access, so I hope it finds its niche and sees continued development.
Having lots of fun with this game so far! - Requires strategy during draft, and making a game-plan - Requires intensive micro during the fights themselves, spawning turrets and minions, moving towers, using abilities, building walls, etc' - Completely free to play. Money only buys you skins. Getting a complete set of "runes" aka modifications is very easy since you can equip the same one multiple times. - Daily rotations on towers/minions. Only downside is not enough players, but the bots can be very challenging!
Had to figure out some stuff in the beginning but it was definitely worth the effort. One of the most in-depth TD games I ever played with loads of different towers / units / abilities and possibilities to mix them and find a good strategy. I Also like the pvp idea though i mostly played against bots so far. Plus, what i REALLY like about this game is that is not pay-to-win or any kind of that rip-off fake free game. Yes, there is premium currency but everything what makes you stronger can also be unlocked by earning ingame-money via playing matches. Graphics and sound are appropriate for a TD game. All in all a good game for players who like to delve into a game and try and figure out a good tactic although the game mechanics might be a bit overwhelming at the beginning.
Updated Review (July 16th): The comments are right. Stating this system is "pay-to-win" is definitely too much. It's probably "pay-to-gain-early-advantages" because there's no lock contents behind microtransaction and every player will eventually unlocks everything from just playing the game. All the towers, minions, and modifications (Damage, Armor, Health Regen, Attack Speed, Armor Penetration, etc.), which gives you a small boost, can be bought early through indirect microtransaction. While you can buy all these mods, you can only equip 5 mods on each categories (Offense, Defense, Utility), to a total of 15 mods per loadout. Yes, there's a loadout system that you can equip before the start of each game; that is pretty neat. Anyway, the boost are minimal. The game is small, unique, and free. Give it a try because this is only a one-man experience on the game. Old Review (May 4th): Pay-to-win system that upgrades your Towers and Minions with damage increase, health regeneration, armor penetration, attack speed, cooldown reduction, and armor through indirect microtransactions. You can purchase Premium Currency using real money and trade Premium Currency into Base Currency; indirectly purchasing Base Currency using real money to buy all those modifications.
Really Great Game! The Community is also really great to talk to
Alright so the game is very new and doesn't have much more content than a mobile game BUT it runs smooth and easy like something this small should. Its fun for what it is and where it is in development. The creators are asking for money in the best possible way: being simple and clear about it. It's not pay to win or anything but you can buy cosmetics if you want. It's clear these folks want to make a good product and hopefully they will keep up the good work. It's certainly not for everyone but it is a fun little game and well made at that. Not a lot of content but I think they'll get there. I would pay $0.99 for this on mobile aftre a few more cosmetic tweaks.
