Core Devourer
This game takes a lot of inspiration from 20 Minutes Until Dawn, down to having a lot of exact copies of the same upgrades, upgrades which don't combine well with one another. This along with bugs and the game just being really easy makes for a not so fun experience. I want to like Core Devourer because it has a unique style in the sea of crap bullet-heavens but it currently has enough issues that I'd personally say it's worth waiting for more updates before picking this up.
Gameplay
The gameplay loop of Core Devourer is surprisingly quick, where other bullet-heavens have you waiting out a 20-30 minute timer, here you simply must kill enemies and bosses to proceed leading to runs taking less than 10 minutes in most cases. There are 3 maps with only slight differences in enemies and I believe the same bosses in most cases, it makes it so that while quick, runs are repetitive, I'd personally prefer more unique enemies per map. The game uses the Nova Drift style of upgrades that 20MTD also uses, where upgrades you take lead to expansions of those upgrades, these also provide a passive stat buff based on rarity, I wish the rarity also effected the upgrade in some way. Upgrades feel very Samey, there are a handful that summon 1 tentacle/laser/orb etc. that have upgrades that make them have 2 tentacles/lasers/orbs etc. leading to everything you pick not really mattering, I think beyond my 3rd game I stopped reading the upgrades and just took based on rarity instead. The upgrades also don't really interact with one another so you just end up with 20 or so separate things. I do like how they have done the meta-progression here, Augmentations are your basic stat increases typical to bullet-heavens but you can overload them for a stronger buff that comes with a downside, I really hope they expand this tree because I think it has a lot of potential, it only took me 4 hours to complete the whole thing. There are also components that you acquire from victories that you can equip and have random stats and are upgradeable. There are 3 meta-currencies in the game which are not balanced well, after 7 hours I have completed all uses for Energy and Catalyst but have a significant amount of upgrades left that require Mythril, either some re-balancing of what costs what needs to be done or some future meta-progression needs to use more of the first 2 materials. The game also has a few bugs that need to be resolved, when you come out of the upgrade screen holding your movement key your character is stuck in place until you re-press your movement key which lead to most of my damage during my playtime. There is also no delay for picking an upgrade choice when the screen opens so dashing at the wrong time will select an upgrade.
Achievements (58/58)
The achievements are really easy for basically just playing 3 or so runs with every class and beating average difficulty modifiers. Achievements are also tied to in-game unlocks.
Settings/Accessibility/Misc
4 save slots. Game hitches a lot on max settings, needs some optimization. In-game achievements menu to see progress. Colour blind mode. Rebindable controls for keyboard and gamepad, game softlocks if you rebind gamepad controls without a gamepad. 11 languages supported.
TL;DR
Early bullet-heaven with potential. Decent upgrade system, but upgrades are repetitive. Fast gameplay loop, but boring/repetitive maps & enemies. Fun meta-progression. A few bugs. Easy achievements.
Check out my Curator page
If you don't have a great deal of other games in this genre, this is a pretty good one, its competently made. If you've got lots of others, it doesn't offer anything new and more interesting. Its the same but different.
completely bland and suffers from two annoying problems: 1. One of the resources you use to upgrade stuff becomes useless well before the end of the game, and you can't convert it into something useful 2. After leveling up, you sometimes can't move left or right for a brief moment, and it's long enough to potentially mess up your run
Feels like a lazy assets flip tbh
its a fun roug-lite game but i would like to see more updates :d
TL/DR - 3/10 playable but unbalanced, buggy, and abandoned by the developer so none of its "core" issues will ever be fixed. for the 5$ price tag it is an absolutly horrible purchase compared to so many far better games in the roguelite listing. game is embarrasingly short with few enemies, 3 maps, and a progression tech tree thats largely useless, weapons that have potential but could be so much more fun with more upgrades and flushing out. sadly it all requires time and effort that this game will never see. i would give some leeway to the dev if its his first tame at such a game learning how to do the code, but most of these kinds of games are coders learning with their game, and so many games being so much better this excuse is not valid. it feels like a school project.. pushed out with the bare minimums with almost no love thrown into it then tossed aside when he released it and moved onto other things. would be ok for a 99 cent alpha, but as it stands this title is NOT worth 5$
Jeu très prenant, avec un système de power-up intéressant, une progression et une augmentation de la difficulté assez fluide. Je pense que ça va m'occuper un moment !
it ok
