This game does not explain anything to the player. You HAVE to buy all the initial weapons and armor from the blacksmith to unlock the next ones. But the worst is that this game has 4 dungeons and then the final boss but when you finish the first dungeon you get a bug for "waiting other players" and cannot continue. So you can only play 1/5 of the game. And the developers have not fixed it. Worst expirience I had in a game.
Funcom makes frequent use of Denuvo DRM malware, they make fun of people who object to this and censor arguments against Denuvo. Funcom is also in the pocket of Tencent, and by extension of chicom.
There is a game-breaking bug: when you finish the first dungeon, you get a bug for "waiting for other players". And you can't continue playing. I don't understand the devs not fixing such a huge bug. Other than that, the game is really fun, but this just makes it not worth investing time.
Fun game and great to play. Conan Chop Chop is a mixed bag that will give back plenty if you put a few hours into it, but the quality of what it gives largely depends on what you want from it to begin with. Room to room based combat and meta progression are a genre staple at this point, and the core gameplay of this one in particular is fun, but not without a few problems. First and foremost there is no option to rebind keys. I personally had an issue that only happened in online co-op (more on that later) where the game decided I was using a controller while I had none plugged in. This lead to me not having a cursor on the screen, making aiming with my sword and/or bow interesting to say the least. Speaking of the bow, it is naturally bound to left CTRL. Oof for some. There are two currency based progressions in the game. One is your character's skill points. Each character has multiple skills to unlock that range from basic +max health starts to unique traits. The other form is unlocking items such as weapons, armors, shields and charms (perks such as having a pig or chicken follow you around, or coating your weapon with fire, etc.)
Conan Chop Chop is a colorful roguelite action game developed by Mighty Kingdom and published by Funcom. Instead of presenting the grim, brutal tone typically associated with the Conan franchise, the game takes a dramatically different direction by embracing a playful, cartoon-inspired interpretation of the Hyborian world. Characters appear as exaggerated, chibi-like versions of legendary heroes, and the overall presentation leans heavily into humor and lighthearted chaos. This creative shift transforms the traditionally dark sword-and-sorcery universe into something far more accessible and comedic, giving Conan Chop Chop a distinct identity among action roguelites. The story revolves around the sinister sorcerer Thoth-Amon, one of Conan’s most infamous enemies, who orchestrates a dangerous challenge known as the “Wrath-a-Thon.” This twisted competition lures warriors from across the land with promises of glory, but the true goal is to resurrect an ancient evil that threatens the entire world. Players can choose from several heroes drawn from Conan lore, including Conan himself, the pirate queen Bêlit, the fierce warrior Valeria, and the noble captain Pallantides. Each hero enters the challenge for their own reasons, but all must fight through monsters, traps, and cursed lands to stop Thoth-Amon’s scheme before it brings ruin to Hyboria. Gameplay follows the core structure of a roguelite adventure, where players repeatedly venture into procedurally generated regions filled with enemies, loot, and hazards. Each run begins from a central village hub that acts as the player’s base of operations. From there, players travel into dangerous territories such as forests, ruins, and deserts, each populated with waves of enemies and mini-boss encounters. Combat is fast and energetic, built around hack-and-slash mechanics that emphasize quick dodging, careful positioning, and aggressive melee attacks. Players can also use ranged weapons, explosives, and special abilities to overcome the many creatures lurking in these chaotic battlefields. Each playable hero offers a slightly different approach to combat, encouraging experimentation with various playstyles. Some characters excel in raw melee strength, while others rely on agility or ranged attacks to survive. As players explore the world, they collect a wide variety of weapons, armor pieces, magical charms, and upgrades that dramatically alter how a run unfolds. These items can grant new abilities, enhance damage output, or introduce unusual effects that combine into powerful builds. The randomized nature of these items ensures that every run feels different, reinforcing the replayability that defines the roguelite genre. Failure is an expected part of the gameplay loop. When a hero falls in battle, the run ends and the player returns to the village hub. However, progress is not entirely lost. Players retain certain resources gathered during the run, which can be used to unlock permanent upgrades and new equipment options. Over time, this progression system strengthens the player’s capabilities and allows them to tackle more difficult areas and bosses. This gradual sense of advancement helps balance the challenge, ensuring that repeated attempts feel rewarding rather than frustrating. One of the most enjoyable aspects of Conan Chop Chop is its cooperative multiplayer mode. The game supports up to four players working together either locally or online, and the chaotic combat becomes significantly more entertaining when friends join the adventure. Team members can revive each other, coordinate attacks against bosses, and share the excitement of discovering powerful loot combinations. Multiplayer sessions often lead to unpredictable moments as players scramble to survive massive enemy encounters or accidentally trigger traps during heated battles. This cooperative design gives the game a strong party-game appeal and greatly enhances its overall entertainment value. Visually, the game stands out for its bold cartoon aesthetic. Characters are rendered with exaggerated proportions and expressive animations that emphasize the comedic tone of the experience. The environments feature bright colors and stylized designs that contrast with the traditionally harsh world of Conan lore. While this artistic choice may surprise fans expecting the darker look associated with other Conan games, it works well in reinforcing the game’s humorous personality. The playful visuals also make the combat easier to read during hectic multiplayer battles, where dozens of enemies may appear on screen simultaneously. The sound design complements the lively visuals with energetic music and exaggerated combat effects. Sword clashes, monster roars, and explosive traps create a lively battlefield atmosphere, while the soundtrack maintains a fast pace that keeps players engaged during intense encounters. The lighthearted tone carries through to the game’s dialogue and character interactions, which often feature humorous lines that parody the seriousness of traditional barbarian stories. Despite its charm, Conan Chop Chop does have a few weaknesses. While the roguelite structure provides replay value, the gameplay systems are relatively simple compared to deeper titles in the genre. Combat mechanics can begin to feel repetitive after extended play sessions, especially when playing alone without the added excitement of multiplayer cooperation. Some players may also find that the progression system lacks the complexity or long-term variety seen in more elaborate roguelites. As a result, the game often feels best enjoyed in shorter sessions rather than extended marathon playthroughs. Even with these limitations, Conan Chop Chop succeeds as an entertaining and approachable action game. Its colorful presentation, humorous storytelling, and accessible mechanics make it easy for players to jump in and enjoy the chaos. The cooperative multiplayer experience, in particular, elevates the game from a simple roguelite into a lively adventure that thrives on shared moments of victory and disaster. By embracing a playful interpretation of the Conan universe, the developers created a game that stands apart from the franchise’s darker adaptations while still delivering plenty of sword-swinging action. Overall, Conan Chop Chop offers a fun and energetic take on the roguelite formula, combining cartoonish humor with chaotic combat and cooperative gameplay. While it may not provide the deepest systems or most complex progression mechanics, it delivers an enjoyable experience that works especially well when played with friends. For players looking for a lighthearted action adventure set in the legendary world of Conan, the game provides plenty of barbarian mayhem wrapped in a charming and comedic package. Rating: 7/10
After defeating the first boss I got the "Waiting for player"-bug and quit the game, only to see my progress completly scraped. There seems to be a workaround, but the game was not too great to begin with, so this game has lost my interest.
Conan Chop Chop isn’t bad. It’s actually pretty enjoyable in short sessions, and there are some fun upgrade combinations that can turn your character into a spinning blender of destruction. The cartoon art style is easily the strongest part — very clean and fits the silly tone much better than a serious Conan game would. The problem is it never really stands out. After a few hours you’ve basically seen most of what the game offers. It’s a light roguelite, not a deep one, and the repetition hits faster than expected. Many players say it feels more like a good side-mode than a full standalone title. This is absolutely a “buy on sale” game — and even then, a good sale. + pleasant, clean art style + fun short sessions and builds + decent co-op − little variety long-term − shallow progression − overpriced at full price
Fun and chaotic with friends, with plenty of moments that make you laugh. However, it gets very repetitive quickly and is quite buggy, which hurts the experience. I cant recommend this with games like castle crashers.
This one is hard to recommend. It could be fun with friends, but is held back by numerous bugs and technical issues. Some bugs are minor and easy to ignore, like taking damage from traps that never visibly triggered after an area was cleared. Others are much more serious, such as losing access to shop slots in town. Setting up remote play together was also frustrating, sometimes controllers wouldn't work, forcing us to restart the game and try again.
