Clean the Sea!

Clean the Sea is a simplistic game that scratches that cleaning (and completionist) itch decently well. I finished all of the maps in about an hour with no issues getting all achievements. I think the music adds a lofi chill vibe, and the gameplay is smooth and easy to get the hang of. Each map has its own inhabitants that come back once the pollution is gone, which I think is a sweet touch. I really enjoyed the content, but I wish there was more. There's not a whole lot of replay value, unless I want to go in and clean up extra bits of trash as they float up, but after completing the maps it feels a bit tedious in comparison. I upgraded my ship to about half and had all of my fleet hired at level 2 before I finished; I think the grind to get more money for upgrades may be a bit tedious as well. Aside from adding more maps, I think this could be fixed with some sort of respawning map (or randomized event) that gives the original "clean up the pollution" setting. Overall, I think this is a sweet and fun game that is well made and quite enjoyable, albeit a bit short. I hope they add more content for this game in the future!

I genuinely love games like this, and no one can convince me otherwise. I beat Clean The Sea! in one sitting, which I can't even brag about. The game takes about an hour to fully complete, and even less to get all the achievements for (which is kinda wild). You really have to like cleaning and/or incremental games to get the most out of this one. Thankfully, I'm a sucker for both. It reminded me of a lower-budget version of Spilled!, which I beat last year. That sounds hilarious, because Spilled! was made by only one person, so I didn't think the bar could go any lower. In Clean The Sea!, you start with a slow boat that can carry 15 pieces of garbage. You collect the garbage that continuously spawns, dump it in the recycling bin, earn money, and upgrade your boat. If that sounds repetitive, that's because it is. Hence, why I said you really need to like a game like this to get the most out of it. There's something so calming about a repetitive, simple, and satisfying task. This game surely isn't going to win any awards, but I had my hour of fun with it. However, it's certainly not without its faults. For one, I like to see my progress in a cleaning game like this. Unfortunately, the garbage constantly spawns in the water, even after you've fully completed a section of the level. I'm sure it's so that you can keep upgrading the ship as much as you want, but this just makes me wonder what the point of cleaning is in the first place. It's almost a little too realistic, in the sense that your actions have virtually no meaning, leaving me feeling more nihilistic than satisfied. But I digress. Also, coins are absolutely busted in this game. One coin is worth $400 in cash. You pick up coins randomly, but they have a good chance of spawning. I often arrived at the bank with 25 coins to hand in, because that's really the only thing they're worth spending on. This matters because you can basically speed through most of the game by just farming coins again and again. It's an absurd amount of cash for how often you find them. In my opinion, coins should be converted to $50 in cash. Another gripe I have is that it's hard to know when the area is fully clean, or when you're even done the game. In Clean The Sea!, your goal is to clean the entire city, split into different sections. As you complete each section, a new one opens at a price. Once you've fully cleaned an area, you can move on to a new city and start the process over. But when you clean the last section in the final city, nothing happens. You don't get an achievement, credits don't roll, and not even a sound plays. I left thinking, "That's it?" I appreciate the game adding a New Game + mode that lets you play from the beginning with your upgraded ship. But it didn't warrant another playthrough. Despite my gripes, I had fun with this. If you liked Spilled! and want something similar, play this game. It's only $2.50 during the Steam Spring sale, so you really have no excuse if you're even remotely interested in a game like this. Just don’t think too hard about the infinite stream of garbage magically reappearing five seconds later. Your actions do matter (he says as he aggressively cleans the same patch of water for the 12th time).
