Honestly some of the most fun I have had in a 90's FPS.I think the movement is really floaty but in a good way and makes for some fun combat. I enjoyed reading the terminals I even found the hidden bungie terminal in the 2nd to last level. This is going to be a hot take but the classic marathon machine gun >>> chain gun from doom and it even has a grenade launcher!

Maratonul Clasic?
mucho mejor que el marathon mas reciente
TLDR; While the gameplay is mostly fun and the story is decent, the level design has aged exceedingly poorly. Before I start the review off, I am mostly not so horribly negative because the game is free, and makes a little piece of gaming history very very easily accessible, and that is something to always be appreciated (*cough cough* nightdive *cough cough*). With that out of the way, Marathon has many neat ideas (i.e duel wielding, secondary fire modes, objectives) that were pioneered in other games after Marathon... and if it weren't for the game now being free, I'd advise you play those games instead. Because for every little nice thing is some horrible and dated aspect to it that always makes you think "Why wasn't it like the other games to begin with?". For instance: Reloading. Why isn't there a reload key? Why do I have to shoot the wall or floor every time I'm low on ammo just to reload? Isn't it obvious just to have it there? Or how about objectives: No briefing screens before levels, no voice over to tell you what to do... just wall panels of varying length telling you what to do (Which aren't ever hard to read, but it doesn't pause the game, and you will just die sometimes). There's a lot more than just these things (LIKE THE SAVING, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥) that are so painfully confusing why they just had to do them the way they did and that also hold the game back way more than it even should for modern audiences. "Neat" (or not so neat) additions aside, compared to its contemporaries like Heretic, Doom 2 and Rise of the Triad, it has aged better in the gameplay aspect for the most part. It still suffers from the horrible being backed into walls and absolutely murdered by the enemies of most 2.5d FPS games of that period, but that is also mostly level dependent... which it also unfortunately suffers from a lot... like a lot a lot... because the game is a maze. A horrible horrible maze where the floors kill you toward the end or sometimes just the whole ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sector will kill you. There's actually a whole level with the once and never again used oxygen mechanic where you have to go around a big circular maze hitting switches... to get to the end point to, guess what? You have to hit switches! At least they have the courtesy to show you what the switch does, but that doesn't mean much when you have no idea how the ♥♥♥♥ to get to where what was shown, nor when there's like 3 different exits and 3 locked doors and you don't know at any point when a door is unlocked or opened. There are way more examples of pointless ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like this, but instead of telling you examples, here's a few levels full of pointless ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ or are just lame ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mazes: G4 Sunbathing; Fire! Fire! Fire! Fire! Fire!; Habe Quiddam; and last but not least... Ingue Ferroque. All of these are not only awful mazes, but truly great examples as to why the 90s weren't actually the best era of games because I am still so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ glad we moved away from padding out game runtime with pointless mazes. If you think you can withstand a ton of god-awful mazes alongside some very aged gameplay and (even for its time) bad sound design, you'll probably enjoy Marathon. I almost did, but someone who must've had a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ minotaur for an uncle had the idea that mazes were the best dopamine releasing thing since whoever discovered wanking. All in all, just play Marathon 2. Infinity is uhhhhh........
I think the level design was making fun of me and that's okay.
