Definitely on the shorter side, but given the intent is to constantly replay levels and seemingly more content coming later I highly reccomend.
really good! if you played neon white, this game is pretty akin to that (and i imagine heavily inspired by it), and a blast to play, even if the design isn't as tight as neon white's is. visually, the game is capital-g Gorgeous; i think the dev really knocked it out of the park with how the game feels visually. the game is fairly short, but it's also really well done for what it is, and i do recommend it!! i'm hoping there'll be more of this game, if enough people buy the game. i don't know if the file selection at the beginning is a teaser for an expansion to the game; i'm hoping it is. soundtrack is a banger, and of course crisp is involved in every indie game that's on my radar because crisp is just prolific like that. shoutout crisp. now, a few complaints: my biggest complaint is how the sound is mixed. THE SOUNDS ARE REALLY REALLY REALLY WAY TOO LOUD and drown out literally everything else! thankfully, i can adjust them individually (my config is music 1.0, sound 0.55, voice 0.7), but the sound that plays before the announcer speaks is similarly way too loud, and imo should be part of the "sound" and not the "voice" slider. ideally, the defaults get adjusted to a config similar to mine so the sounds just arent so overwhelming some of the levels are REALLY easy to get lost in. 5-3 is a big offender, it has a linear-ish layout, but with the inclusion of the enemy that you teleport to when killing it, the pathing gets lost really really quickly, making you lose track of where you're supposed to go, or making reaching some areas 10x more difficult, and generally not knowing where the hell the cores are. i think the two main things that would go a very long way would be to add a "compass" that points to the nearest core, as well as rethinking how espers fit into levels (maybe getting rid of the teleportation mechanic altogether. i know its a speedrun/score attack game and teleportation adds a lot of freedom with how to clear levels, but i feel like its more of a crutch than anything else) and less complaint, more of a nitpick, the visual style, while insanely good, imo doesnt blend in as well in e.g. the smooth movement of some UI elements where the rest of the UI is blocky and flashy, as well as the
vn art
being almost jarring with how different it is from the rest of the visual style

I really enjoyed this game, its pretty similar to neon white and its basic movement kinda reminds me of ultrakill, but its different enough to be its own game. The high energy breakcore music is great and really gets you in the flow as you play the levels and the "blocky" artstyle while simple makes the game more charming. My only complaints would be: 1 - That the scoring system is kinda boring, as it doesnt really reward you for speed or quick kills, but instead giving you more points for mindlessly stomping every enemy possible 2 - Crashing, im not sure if it just happened to me but i would experience a lot of crashing on my playthrough, specially on 5-3 and on 6-1 3 - The ULTIMATA achievement(which requires 33,333 kills across the game) is completely unreasonable, after i finished the game and got all other achievements i had around 7k kills, and took me around 10h of mindlessly farming to finally get it 4 - This one could be just skill issue, but a lot of times i would straight up not know where i should be going and get lost in the levels, also the enemy placement in some levels seemed pretty random, but again, could just be skill issue But overall i would really recommend this game! As we probably will never get a neon white 2 i kinda thought i would never get another game to scratch that itch, but cicadamata was the perfect game for that!
OBLIGATIONS NO LONGER BIND YOU. THIS IS WHO YOU ARE NOW. TEAR FLESH FROM BONE.
If you like Ultrakill you will probably like this game. The movement is extremely fluid and feels like there could be some cool techs but I haven't figured them out yet.
I rarely leave reviews but feel like this game deserves way more attention so here I go CICADAMATA is a movement FPS similar to Neon White - you traverse through the stages quickly as you collect four cores and extract, while killing enemies along the way. Controls are incredibly simple: triple jump, dash, stomp (vertical dive) and one gun with basic shotgun spread as primary and zoomed hitscan shot as secondary. Overall a pretty basic premise, but what elevates CICADAMATA to the peak of gaming excitement is the smooth yet heartpounding gameplay and unique presentation. It is a sensory overload in the best possible way. Crunchy sound effects, amazing OST, gorgeous artstyle (slightly nuMarathon coded but closer to PS1 era graphics and style like Wipeout) and tight, fast gameplay. It is short but I feel that it works in favor as the game is so intense it would be exhausting if it was 10 hours long. There is still a ton of replayability if you are a completionist and want to get DMND rank on every stage. Which brings me to only nitpick really which is the scoring system. Score is weighted a lot towards farming points on enemies with ZONE buff rather than speedrunning. Of course you still need a route locked in for the time bonus, I just found efficently chaining enemies for speed boosts/ability refreshes much more satisfying. The only suggestion to the wonderful developer I have is to implement a level builder for community to make and share maps as it would go a long way towards longevity. At the present it is an extremely satisfying experience well worth the low asking price. Overall 10/10, video games are back yo
