Chronicles of Forgotten Tears, developed and published by Old Owl Game, is an ambitious indie fantasy title that blends narrative-driven adventure with deckbuilding combat and choice-based progression. Set in the fictional world of Vaegoth, the game presents a realm shaped by political instability, magical influence, and fragile alliances between races such as humans, elves, dwarves, and orcs. From the outset, it is clear that the project aims to offer more than a straightforward fantasy quest. Instead of guiding players through a rigidly linear storyline, it encourages exploration of branching paths, personal relationships, and morally weighted decisions that can significantly alter the outcome of events. The narrative forms the backbone of the experience. Much of the game unfolds through dialogue sequences and character interactions that resemble visual novel structures, allowing players to engage deeply with the cast and the world’s lore. Conversations are not merely decorative; they often influence alliances, unlock new narrative routes, or close off other possibilities entirely. The writing attempts to balance political intrigue with personal drama, weaving together themes of loyalty, ambition, and emotional conflict. As a result, the story feels personal rather than epic in scale, focusing on individual motivations within a larger web of turmoil. Multiple endings and branching outcomes add replay value, rewarding players who are willing to experiment with different choices across subsequent playthroughs. Combat introduces a strategic dimension through a deckbuilding system that differentiates the game from traditional action-adventure titles. Rather than relying solely on reflexes or real-time mechanics, encounters often revolve around assembling and utilizing a customized deck of cards that represent abilities, spells, and tactical maneuvers. This approach encourages thoughtful planning, as players must carefully consider how their card combinations interact and how to respond to enemy strategies. Deck customization evolves over time, allowing experimentation with different builds that reflect the player’s chosen path. While the system adds depth, it can also present a learning curve, especially for those unfamiliar with card-based combat systems. Visually, Chronicles of Forgotten Tears employs 2D art and character illustrations that emphasize style over technical spectacle. The environments and character portraits serve primarily to support the narrative and gameplay rather than overwhelm with graphical detail. The presentation feels consistent with its indie origins, prioritizing atmosphere and readability. Music and sound design aim to reinforce the fantasy tone, with ambient tracks accompanying both exploration and dialogue sequences. While the audiovisual package may not rival larger studio productions, it successfully maintains immersion within the scope of the project. The game’s early access status has contributed to mixed reactions within the community. Some players praise its creative ambition, particularly its integration of story branching with deckbuilding mechanics and relationship systems. Others point out rough edges in pacing, balance, or technical polish that occasionally disrupt the flow. As with many indie projects striving to combine multiple genres, the scope can sometimes feel broader than the refinement allows. Nevertheless, the commitment to player agency and layered storytelling stands out as a defining strength. Ultimately, Chronicles of Forgotten Tears is a genre-blending fantasy experience that prioritizes narrative choice and strategic experimentation. It offers a world filled with political tension, personal relationships, and tactical combat decisions, all interconnected through branching paths. While it may not achieve complete mechanical polish, its ambition and focus on meaningful player decisions give it a distinctive identity. For players who appreciate story-driven adventures enhanced by deckbuilding strategy and replayable narrative routes, it presents a compelling, if imperfect, journey into a richly imagined fantasy realm. I don't give many negative reviews, but I have to here, and it's a damn shame. This is such a good game...I loved the love interests, the animations weren't bad, the story pretty good. But...it's abandoned and possibly stolen from what I've heard. This had so much potential, the card combat I really liked. Again, but...I can't recommend something that will never be finished. If you don't mind a half finished game, then by all means, get it - it's what I did. But get it cheap/on sale cause like I said, it'll never get finished.
