CHOP is a solid entry in the fast paced, short round arena combat style of local multiplayer games. One of the appealing thing about CHOP that ensures it a long-term entry into a games roster is that it doesn't just take the successful mechanics of other games, or pin it's hat on a single gimmick. While some concepts, such as one hit deaths and short round-based combat may have been inspired by other games, the mechanics are very much built from the ground up. The headline innovation is the victory condition of the flagship game mode, escaping through a portal. Once you kill an enemy, a portal appears on the map matching your colour. You need to escape through this to win the match. Even with only two players, the dead player spawns fast enough to stop this, and environmental traps may need to be avoided as well. There are two options for combat, a melee attack and throwing your sword. Once you have thrown your sword you need to pick it up before using it again, and your melee attack is replaced with a grapple. When you pick a character you can also pick a special ability which modifies your throwing weapon. This is a great mechanic, as these can prove to be relevant to more than just combat. For example, one option is to command your sword to return to you, getting armed faster and getting a second cut at the enemy on the way back. Another option is to teleport to your sword. The returning blade makes scoring a kill easier, but the teleport ability can be very useful in reaching your portal without being killed. This makes for interesting play style variations based on the ability you choose. The pickups have a unique feel to them as well, some provide your thrown weapon with unique properties, such as laying down a layer of ice, while others change the attack entirely into rapid fire guns. Even small details are original, for example instead of wall hopping you cling to and crawl up walls and roofs. While many things may feel familiar, such as looping entry and exits on the map, natural hazards, and dynamic, moving platforms, the game feels like an entirely new one. The grizzle cell shading graphics style works well and is a welcome alternative to some of the tackier 2.5D art that you can sometimes get in low budget indie games. Cell shading is underutilised in local multiplayer games, and it is great to see it put into use so well. In short, if you are looking to add a game to your couch gaming roster, this is a solid choice. Doesn't have much content at the moment, but promises an entertaining gameplay for couch multiplayer. Bloody, chaotic, random and fun! Looking forward to see more updates to get out of early access.
The cheeky, borderlands-esque, art stands out above the crowd of arena games and I hope they add more content :) I'd recommend it, but only if you are hungry for a new arena game.
I played many local multiplayer games in steam (roof rage 8 players, gang beasts 8 players, serious sam bogus detour, shinobi bad buddies, broforce, duck game, etc...), and this game is definitely at the top!!! It would be more awesome if it supported more than 4 players locally (perhaps 6 players?)
*edit July 2024* - As it is currently 90% off, I wanted to give a heads up. Although this game is still great and well worth the price tag, be aware that it was completely abandoned sometime shortly after release. The last update was at the end of 2019, consisting of a skin pack. Unfortunately, the developer (as a company) just doesn't exist anymore. --Original review-- Down and dirty since it was just released... This game has a lot of potential, and it feels really, really good, but there are so many bugs (visual, gameplay, round math, etc) that need to be ironed out, and quickly so we can get back to killing soon. *Played this on a friend's computer (MacBook Pro 2018) for about 4 hours and just had to buy it.*
CHOP is one of the best couch co-op experiences you're going to find nowadays. As a bonus, the development team are an awesome group of people who do listen to requests and respond accordingly. I don't need to describe how fun this game is; there is a no-risk demo available for download. Check it out for yourself and enjoy.

Really fun couch-game with friends. Let's Chop!!!
This game is a lot of fun with friends, and the bots aren't bad either. Solid four player madness. I enjoy the character abilities, but I am hoping they get the support to throw in some more characters and customization. I've got some ideas for abilities. Holla at me
