Wait for a sale or bundle. full price is ehh but i played it for 2.5 hrs so i guess time well spent, kinda. when i first launched the game i wondered why my gpu was blowing up and my computer was screaming for dear life. set FPS settings off of default unlimited ASAP. nice premise, eh execution. pros. story \ setting is a neat premise, just barely touched upon by the characters or snippets of info you find thru out the game. Neutral? hunted down by charles once in a blue moon. think he appeared 5-9 times throughout my entire playthru? Cons 1. you fetch quest everywhere and everything. 2. mostly barren open world 3. can easily run past anything, no point in trying to 'stealth' in this game at all. can play the entire game as a speedrunner with unlimited sprint stamina beat the game in 2.5hrs. with some time dedicated to trying to save my computer from the default UNLIMITED FPS, and ALL MAX GRAPHICS SETTINGS
One of the best horror games I have played! If you love being chased by a scary train with guns then this is a perfect horror game for you! 10/10 recommend this!
2.5 hours of absolute nothingness. You drive round an empty map and complete basic fetch quests to upgrade the train, then summon the boss fight. I can count how many times I encountered Charles on 1 hand. Not sure if it was bugged but I barely saw him... Performance is shockingly bad, and the game has a weird mix of photo-realistic and cartoon graphics which don't blend well together. If they committed to 1 art style it might have looked decent. For the same price you could buy Bendy, SOMA, or Amnesia, all of which are better experiences. Avoid this YouTuber slop.
Nightmare is beyond awful
Its an okay game for me personally. I had to get it out of my backlog so I had to sit through it for a few hour. It was a craze a few years back so, I had already spoiled myself. I don't hate it too much but its not something that is mind boggling either. I can recommend it in sales, and to personally experience Charles in the flesh(digitally) Tasks/Achievements were fairly straightforward except Nightmare mode (Goodluck with that)
Choo-Choo Charles stands out because it takes a very simple idea—"what if Thomas the Tank Engine was a giant man-eating spider?"—and builds an entire game around it with surprising confidence. It's not universally considered a masterpiece, but it became a cult favourite for several reasons. What makes it so memorable 1. An instantly iconic villain Charles is one of those monsters you recognize immediately. The combination of a steam locomotive, spider legs, and a creepy face is bizarre enough to be funny, but also genuinely unsettling. That unique design made the game go viral long before many people played it. 2. Constant tension Unlike many horror games where you explore buildings, you're often riding your own train across an island. At almost any moment, Charles can appear on the tracks behind you. Hearing the whistle and seeing him gaining on you creates a unique kind of suspense. 3. The train progression is satisfying You collect scrap to upgrade: -Speed -Armor -Damage This creates a rewarding gameplay loop where each trip lets you venture a little farther from safety. 4. Open-world structure Instead of a linear horror experience, you're free to explore the island, meet eccentric NPCs, complete missions, and choose your route. It feels like a small sandbox where you're constantly balancing risk and reward. 5. Horror mixed with humour The premise is so absurd that it never becomes relentlessly oppressive. It manages to be: -Creepy -Funny -Exciting That combination appeals to a much wider audience than pure psychological horror. Why it became such a viral hit The game was developed primarily by a single developer, Gavin Eisenbeisz. People were impressed that one person created: -An open-world map -Train combat -AI enemy encounters -Voice acting and quests -A memorable monster That "solo developer" story generated a lot of goodwill. It also became hugely popular with YouTubers and streamers because every Charles encounter creates dramatic, unscripted moments. Watching someone panic as a giant spider-train suddenly appears is entertaining even if you've never played the game yourself. Where it falls short Not everyone loves it. Common criticisms include: The game is relatively short (around 3–5 hours). Side quests can become repetitive. Combat is fairly simple. NPC interactions are functional rather than deeply developed. Once you've fully upgraded your train, some of the tension fades. Overall If you're looking for a polished AAA horror game, you may find Choo-Choo Charles a bit rough around the edges. But if you enjoy creative indie games with memorable concepts, it's easy to see why it earned such a passionate following. A fair summary would be: Concept: ★★★★★ Atmosphere: ★★★★☆ Gameplay: ★★★★☆ Story: ★★★☆☆ Replayability: ★★★☆☆ Its biggest strength isn't that it reinvents horror mechanics—it's that it commits wholeheartedly to one unforgettable idea and executes it with charm and personality.
Choo Choo Charles is slop, but in a good way. It has all the telltale signs of a mascot horror game that's trying to be the next big cash grab, but somehow it still feels like it has a soul. It's unique, short, and fun. It doesn't overestimate what it can achieve, and it never drags things out just to stretch the playtime. I'll also admit that reimagining Thomas the Tank Engine as a horror icon is a pretty fun idea. Obviously, the story is pretty bad, and the game relies heavily on Unreal Engine free assets, but that's okay. The game knows exactly what it is and never tries to pretend it's something bigger. Would I recommend it? Yes and no. If you're just looking for a fun, silly game to waste a few hours with, then absolutely. If you're looking for a genuinely scary horror game or a well written story, then definitely not. But for what it is, I had fun with it.
You've probably seen this game featured on plenty of Youtube channels back when it came out, so I'll keep it short. You, an island, train tracks, a horrible spider train. You collect scrap to somehow magically upgrade your own train, so you deal more damage and don't die as much. Long story short, the regular game mode is fun and keeps you entertained for around 2 hours. After 90 minutes or so, expect a drop-off, however, since stuff becomes less fun with a fully upgraded train. And while that is all nice and fine, STAY AWAY FROM NIGHTMARE MODE! That is a programming attrocity. A warcrime, you might say. Besides it not being that much harder (Permadeath, so stick close to your train at all times), the final fight against Charles is straight-up ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Hitboxes mean nothing anymore. He sprints at you with Mach 5, then hits you and in the same breath teleports elsewhere. His model is gone by the time the hit connects, throwing you for a loop. Basically, because it's programmed so poorly, for 300ms, give or take, 2 Charles exist at once. One hits you, the other sprints at you from his new teleport point. The normal mode deserves an 7/10, however because the nightmare mode is so ♥♥♥♥, I'm deducting points, leaving Choo-Choo Charles with a total of 5.5/10. Something you'll play once, enjoy, then forget it exists and move on.
its fun but without a personal weapon you're just giving cultists your scraps
