Played through a few cases so far and I am definitely enjoying it by far! Doing the research is a tedious task but it's definitely an interesting mechanic for mystery game like this! In my own opinions, at some parts the Voice Acting for some parts are a bit stiff and maybe can be worked on in future games but still good eitherways!
I give a good as a kinda sorta kinda way. 6/10? like there is way too much stuff you need to google like I am trying to write a crappy dan brown novel. I like the art tie in the cyberpunk stuff but a in game search engine wouldn't hurt. like seriously whenever I google game related stuff a walkthrough pops up and ruins the keyfabe of the game. Some of the puzzle is fun but seriously. I don't wanna open chrome all the damn time. its still pretty buggy. voice over is mid. but if you into dan brown novels you will dig this.
I would tentatively recommend it to someone. Fun game, cool premise, and interesting mechanics. Some of it was slightly tired by the end but overall a good experience.
jeux d'enquête avec un Gameplay sympa et une histoire bien construit
+ • Retro-Grafik • unterschiedliche interessante Stories • wiederspielbar, da Entscheidungen unterschiedliche Story-Outputs geben • interessante Charaktere • atmosphärisch • viele Erfolge • gut vertont - •
____________________________________________ + • Retro graphics • various interesting stories • replayable, as decisions lead to different story outcomes • interesting characters • atmospheric • plenty of achievements • well-voiced - •
the game required a lot of research outside of the actual gameplay, which added a meta layer to it, but personally, it didn’t make it more exciting for me.
• the story was okay for me, but I wouldn’t play it again just to hunt for the remaining achievements.
Conclusion
A solid point-and-click game with puzzles, but despite its replayability, it didn’t capture my interest enough to make me want to play through it more than once. My single playthrough logged 14.6 hours, so it’s relatively short. However, with multiple runs, you could easily get significantly more hours of gameplay. For me, it landed in the middle ground in terms of overall rating.
Chinatown Detective Agency delivers an evocative exploration of 2037 Singapore, anchoring its narrative in a gripping cycle of corporate espionage and systemic government corruption. Players navigate a haunting neo-noir landscape where the line between legitimate detective work and dark, state-sponsored intrigue blurs with every lead pursued by the agency. Investigating various international locales requires navigating a flight booking system that spans London, Cairo, Paris, and Istanbul, effectively grounding the investigation in a vast, interconnected world. This sense of global scope reinforces the tension as you track down leads, ensuring that the mystery surrounding the rogue AI Prospero feels truly expansive. Researching historical quotes, translating obscure languages, and identifying coordinates via a real-world browser provides a distinctive fourth-wall-breaking layer to the standard gameplay. Such mechanical innovation forces players to look beyond the screen, transforming mundane search queries into the primary conduit for cracking seemingly impenetrable cases with true satisfaction. Detailed pixel art brings the gritty environment to life, though technical audio glitches frequently undermine the immersive tone established by the visual design. Persistent bugs involving looping footstep sound effects and fluctuating voice audio levels often prove intrusive, distractingly pulling one away from the otherwise tight atmosphere during long, investigative sessions. Selecting between Kieran, Tiger Lily, and Robert promises diverse thematic paths, yet the final chapters play out almost identically regardless of the chosen companion. This rigid narrative structure reveals a disappointment regarding missed potential, as the initial flexibility regarding client interactions ultimately leads to a surprisingly linear, restrictive path toward resolution. Unintuitive puzzle logic occasionally forces a halt in momentum, particularly with a Sumerian numerical safe code that demands an extreme logical leap compared to earlier challenges. Minor UI frustrations, such as a minuscule mouse cursor and mismatched subtitles, also suggest that the polished aesthetic requires some additional technical fine-tuning for clarity. Overall, the journey offers a rewarding intellectual challenge that stands out for its bold departure from traditional point-and-click conventions. Despite the recurring audio bugs and the surprisingly linear nature of its overarching mystery, the core investigative loop remains a uniquely engaging experience for anyone who appreciates clever, research-driven detective work.
Just got through the first two missions. Not a huge adventure game fan but a friend recommended this to me. I'm huge into mystery and crime and the overall vibe and game mechanics is really up my alley although the ui can be a little finicky sometimes. The art is lovely, and so far the voice acting is great. Looking forward to diving into this a bit more.
You cannot save the game (at reasonable intervals) and must keep the game open between playing sessions. (on linux proton configuration)...
A different take on the mystery point and click, Chinatown Detective Agency is a fresh take on the genre, especially if you enjoy the occasional Wikipedia rabbit hole deep dive. The story grips you with the desire to explore a near future of the island of Singapore while solving multiple mysteries, beautifully presented in pixel art. Testing your knowledge on world history and geography, Chinatown Detective Agency expects you to solve its hard riddled cases after extensive digging through your web browser as they are based off of factual real-life events. Just make sure to exclude the tag “Chinatown Detective Agency” from your search to avoid potential walkthrough spoilers! Amidst the rabbit dive, the occasional gun shootouts and careful time management kept me on my toes while my movements to use the least amount of resources. Juggling all of this while scrolling through webpages after webpages for that one eureka moment gave me a high that I haven’t felt in game for a while.
I love a game that makes you actually go looking for information instead of spoon feeding it to you. It's more puzzle game than point and click - there's no real inventory and few dialogue options. But if you enjoyed OG Secret World's investigative quests and keep a notebook by the computer for puzzle solving this is definitely worth your time (but check the humble store for sales!)
