This is a good game to learn how to play chess strategically. I tried the advanced version, and it did not disappoint! I am still working to beat it since it is very challenging. Recommended for those who love chess in an RPG-setting!
This is the chess game I've always wanted. An RPG in the style of old school Pokemon where the battles are over the chess board instead of between people or monsters. This game really pulls out all the stops by adding a storyline and adding lots of fun characters to meet along the way. The game includes opponents with puzzles, items for gaining an edge in games, and a beautiful wild west setting to explore. If you're a fan of chess and RPGs, this is your game right here.
Loved the animation and soundtrack. I'm liking the characters a lot, definitely worth the price
This is different to a lot of chess games on steam (e.g. passant, pawnbarian) in that you are never working with or against anything besides regular chess pieces. As a chess fan, I actually like that purity and it allows the game to lean a little bit more into challenges that someone who likes chess would enjoy (this opponent forces you to play the scotch, this opponent challenges you to a pawn endgame). You will be posed interesting questions like "how do you checkmate with only knights?" or "how do you break through the defence of an opponent with 3 rows of pawns?" As a string of chess exercises, it is enjoyable. The rest of the game is basically an absolute bare minimum RPG, just enough to try and mask the fact that you are actually just playing a bunch of chess scenarios in a sequence. The weaknessses here are obvious in that the world is empty and frankly not fun at all to be in, so I always found myself eager to just hurry up and find the next chess challenge and not really wanting to explore. I do think that the pokemon style "go back to the checkpoint" on loss was a bad decision for this game. When I make a mistake, I want to retry the challenge, but if I know it's gonna send me back, I might just get lazy, use a blank and cheese my way through the exercise, never truly conquering it.. It feels like an inconvenient mechanic that makes sense in a real RPG, but not as much in a chess puzzle game pretending to be an RPG. For the price, I appreciate this game for it being a decent try at making a chess videogame without distorting the chess portion of it to the point of it not being recognisable. For me it was basically a gamified way to force me to explore new positions in chess. I'm a 1600 player and played on the recommended difficulty, and from what I saw, it seems like experienced players will breeze through a lot of it without really having to think too much.
So far, the game is immersive and a blast to play. Nothing beats serving those McNasty checkmates while Levy Rozman yells, “And he sacrificed the ROOOK!”
Even though there's some bugs and programming mistakes, i think it's a very fun game to anyone that loves chess
YES CHESS YES
Good premise, and not without charm, but lazy and badly designed/balanced (among other issues, a major one is that the Blank powerup is busted, basically guaranteeing an easy victory even on Impossible difficulty if used at the right time), with a strong AI slop smell. I would love to be able to change this to a thumbs up, as this is the only RPG (loosely speaking) I'm aware of that uses my favorite turn based strategy game of all time as its battle system, but it's gonna take some hefty updates from the dev.
