Really Good Game. I had lots of Fun Playing this game. Whoever Made this game did a amazing job. This feels like a Real Chess Game to Play for Fun. Also Regarding Controls if you are confused like me at first - 1. First Press Space Bar Key to skip Intro. 2. Then you can Hold Left Mouse click on any Menus to Select that option. E.g 1. Left Click Hold on File then drag mouse towards Quit. Then click to Quit Game. 2. Left Click Hold on any other option like Game then drag down to change difficulty and stuff. Also there are options like Hint and Undo Move on Right Bottom side of screen which are good too. Overall I think it's a great chess game worth playing.

Got it on sale for $2 USD because it's Steam Deck verified and I have fond memories of chess club in middle school (even though I was never the best at it) so I thought it might be fun to tote around physically since I like a couple of Capstone's other games. But that said, I don't recommend this shovelware gutter trash, even at that price. Presentationally, it's dated as f*ck compared to modern alternatives. When the best part is the title screen, you're an abject failure. No music, no nothing except this irritating droning sound that sometimes happens as the computer is making its move. "Erm, having music would break the player's concentration," stfu. Then Capstone could've included a mute option. They'd already included a bajillion piece sets and board options, which is cute, but it's about the only praise I can levy this game's way. Continuing, the "3D mode" (which is just an isometric view, wahoo?) disables the ability to see the computer's calculations as it precisely figures out how to annihilate you irregardless of if you get advice from the game or are just winging it, playing with no input. They advertise this game as having a teaching mode on the storefront, but for the life of me I can't find it anywhere on the menu options at the top of the main screen. And if you're supposed to teach yourself with the aforementioned "advice" the game gives you during matches against the computer, you'll have more fun willingly getting curbstomped and watching your teeth scatter like dust to the wind. This "advice" isn't meant to teach you jack sh*t and instead just tells you what move you should make to deal with any momentary precarious position you're in. It doesn't plan ahead like the computer does or give *actual* advice like a game that's trying to teach you really would. Even on Beginner mode, the computer is obnoxious to play against because, like a computer, they've got a built-in f*cking algorithm to predict your most likely move and set up and strategize beyond anything a beginner would know how to deal with. Playing against the computer is an exercise in frustration, as you will never beat it. I'd say just play this game locally with a real person who doesn't have a built-in algorithm designed to corner you and predict your every move, but who in the right mind is gonna play this specific DOS rendition of chess with you rather than play on a physical, tangible board? To make sure nobody can make illegal moves or something? Just don't bother with this trash, it's got as few reviews as it does because it's not worth anybody's time nowadays. Play on chess.com or with friend/family in-person, this would only be worth its weight if it were made freeware.

Amazing chess game. What more do you need? How is it that only this chess game (that I know of) has a pure D&D style piece set? Actually, there's TWO such sets here. There's BEHOLDERS! Dragons, centaurs, fairies trolls, barbarians, elven warriors, clerics... it's all there. 2D and 3D board options, plus you can customise the board itself. It has levels of mastery I'll probably never get to (filthy chess casual and all that), and is charmingly simple with its timeless pixel graphics. So, for me, it's wonderful - the best chess game ever made. 10/10. All the chess you'll ever need.

Grandmaster Chess is ofc dated now - but it was the premium chess game back in the day. Get: Pure Chess.
