Reviews
This game has much to offer and since the latest patch has ironed out those (only a few) early bugs. With some unique and interesting, clever game design this is more than just a low-budget Bioshock meets Dead Space, there is a superb game here for fans of sci-fi, suspense and horror, with a little psychological horror added in just the right places. Jump-scares are not there for the sake of a cheap thrill, they're thoughtfully placed into the gameplay at just the right moments! The distance between save-points, which I have read as a negative point in a particularly inaccurate review here, creates tension and challenge, and will only be a frustration to those gamers who wish to have their hand held throughout the whole game (and the patch has added a little more, so this should be a good balance now for a wider audience). I miss survival horror that used to challenge me, and with that challenge would feel rewarding when completed, with so many series being dumbed-down, it was a breath of fresh air to experience the puzzles and mysteries of Chasmal Fear. I have a very mid-range PC, very average, and it was no trouble setting resolution at 4K, with all graphic settings at 'epic' and experience FPS of 60+. Very smooth camera, tight controls, all very enjoyable. The atmosphere is superb, and there is much lore and back-story to enhance immersion. As a Resident Evil & Bioshock fan I loved all the written & audio files, that offered a fascinating narrative that drew me in further and made me want to explore as much of the environment as possible. With attentive developers who have already quickly responded to some early fan critique, with a patch that ironed out some minor creases, this game is only going to get better. At a time when triple-A studios are charging £40/£50 for games that offer not a lot more for all their enormously higher resources & production levels, the £15 (10% off currently) I paid for Chasmal Fear, is an absolute bargain, and glad to support indie-studios making great games.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3467977907

Played it for hour and a half and i was really surprised by this game. It is made in Unreal 5 and the performance was amazing on my mid range PC. The fact this game is made by 2 indie devs and the amount of content that they have created amaze me! Good job! I will continue playing this game and keep you posted about the whole experience! But so far so good! P.S. those dogs scared the cr** out of me!
Chasmal Fear, developed by MystiveDev and published by Wandering Wizard, is a first-person survival horror experience that builds its identity around tension, vulnerability, and a strong sense of environmental dread. Set within a deteriorating underwater research facility, the game places players in a confined and hostile space where survival depends as much on caution and planning as it does on reflexes. Rather than leaning into fast-paced action, it emphasizes a slower, more deliberate style of play that aligns closely with classic survival horror design. From the beginning, the game makes it clear that you are not meant to feel powerful. Resources are limited, ammunition is scarce, and every encounter carries risk. Exploration becomes a careful balancing act between curiosity and self-preservation, as venturing into new areas may yield valuable supplies but also expose you to unpredictable threats. The layout of the facility encourages backtracking and familiarity, but the sense of safety is never guaranteed, as previously explored areas can become dangerous again under certain conditions. One of the more distinctive elements of Chasmal Fear is its approach to enemy behavior. Defeating enemies does not always mean eliminating them permanently, as certain conditions can cause them to return in more dangerous forms. This mechanic adds a layer of tension that lingers beyond individual encounters, forcing players to think about the long-term consequences of their actions. While the idea is compelling and reinforces the game’s themes of instability and decay, its execution can feel uneven, occasionally creating frustration when outcomes seem unpredictable rather than strategic. The game also experiments with variability in how situations unfold. Encounters can shift depending on player choices or environmental factors, and certain elements are randomized to keep each playthrough from feeling entirely scripted. This unpredictability helps maintain tension, as players cannot rely solely on memorization to progress. However, these systems do not always have a strong impact on the overall structure, sometimes feeling more like minor variations than fully realized dynamic features. Visually, Chasmal Fear stands out through its use of a bodycam-style perspective and detailed environmental design. The underwater facility is depicted with a focus on confined spaces, dim lighting, and a constant sense of disrepair. This presentation enhances immersion, making the environment feel oppressive and immediate. At the same time, the camera style can be a double-edged sword, as its shakiness and restricted field of view occasionally make navigation and combat less precise than they could be. Atmosphere is where the game consistently succeeds. The combination of sound design, lighting, and environmental storytelling creates a persistent sense of unease. Quiet moments are filled with distant mechanical noises and subtle audio cues, building tension without relying heavily on sudden scares. The setting itself—isolated, submerged, and unstable—adds to this effect, making the environment feel as much like an adversary as the enemies within it. Despite these strengths, the game struggles in areas related to mechanical refinement. Combat can feel awkward, with movement and weapon handling lacking smoothness. Enemy encounters, while initially tense, can become repetitive over time, especially when patterns begin to repeat. Technical inconsistencies and pacing issues occasionally interrupt the experience, reminding players of the gap between the game’s ambitious ideas and its execution. The narrative is presented in a fragmented way, relying on scattered logs and environmental clues rather than direct storytelling. This approach fits the tone of isolation and mystery, but it can also make the story feel underdeveloped. While the premise is intriguing, it doesn’t always come together in a way that feels fully satisfying, leaving some elements open without enough context to make them impactful. An optional cooperative mode adds an alternative way to experience the game, allowing players to tackle its challenges with a partner. This changes the dynamic significantly, reducing the sense of isolation but introducing a more tactical approach to survival. While it adds variety, it also shifts the tone away from pure horror toward a more shared, less oppressive experience. In the end, Chasmal Fear is a game driven by strong ideas and a clear vision of what it wants to achieve. Its emphasis on atmosphere, vulnerability, and unpredictability creates moments of genuine tension, but its lack of polish in key systems prevents it from fully realizing its potential. For players who value immersive environments and are willing to overlook mechanical roughness, it offers a compelling and occasionally memorable experience. For others, its inconsistencies may make it harder to fully appreciate what it attempts to do. Rating: 6/10
First of all i dont normaly write reviews but when i saw that this indie game was build by 2 brothers it kind of resonated with me because me and my brother are also into game development so i appreciated it that much more. I normally dont play many horror games but when i saw some clips of it on youtube it looked pretty interesting to me so i decided to give it a shot. Ive played the game solo in single player and i really like the fisheye effect on the camera, it adds another level of immersion to the world especially the horror aspect, the resources are scarcely placed to make the player be more resourceful instead of shooting at random, it makes you take a slow and steady approach which i like. The atmosphere and the ambiance are what did it for me, i love the vibe of a gloomy and dark underwater city, it feels scary on its own but the sounds and the graphics add another layer to that. Overall even though horror games arent my favorite genre of games i enjoyed the time i spent in the game, i cannot speak for the multiplayer as i havent played that yet but i would love to give it a try again with a friend. For the 19.99$ i payed ive had a fun time, i could go into nit picky details like the mobs sometimes not following and attacking me, or them clipping through the floor when they are killed, or some of the textures or lighting not matching but then again for the price and the fact that it was done by 2 developers makes all of those none issues, none of that took me out of the game or hindered my progress, my only criticism would be maybe the task tracker to be updated more frequently as lve gotten kind of confused on where to go at times but then the tracker got updated and it was all good.
It blew away my expectations. What started out feeling like a mix of Dead Space or Bioshock quickly revealed itself to be something far more unique. With tight mechanics, tense monster encounters, and smart resource management, the game nails the survival horror vibe. Atmosphere is phenomenal, claustrophobic corridors, cool sound design, and monsters that actually feel dangerous. I genuinely got stuck on the firepipe puzzle for a bit, but it was really satisfying once I found how to solve it. The *first? boss? Brutal, but so rewarding once you get the timing down. What I appreciated most was how thoughtful the horror is. The scares aren’t cheap—they’re well placed, and they hit hard because the tension is already doing most of the work. Save points are spaced far enough apart to keep things tense without being unfair (especially with the latest patch adding a bit more balance). It respects players who want that old-school challenge without holding your hand. Performance-wise? Flawless on my mid-range rig. Locked 60+ FPS on Epic settings. Smooth movement, responsive controls, no crashes. And the devs—huge props to them. They already dropped a patch that smoothed out some early rough edges, and their attention to community feedback shows they actually care. The game is an absolute steal. Good Job indies!
