Chaos Squad, developed and published by 螺母游戏 (Nut Games), is an ambitious indie strategy title that blends turn-based combat, roguelite exploration, and survival mechanics within a grim, Lovecraftian fantasy world. The game’s premise revolves around assembling a squad of heroes to traverse a continent shattered by mysterious forces. You must lead your team through hostile regions, battling abominations, scavenging for resources, and piecing together fragments of the world’s lost history. It aims to combine tactical decision-making with the unpredictability of roguelike structure, offering both methodical combat and a constant sense of risk and uncertainty. The foundation of Chaos Squad lies in its turn-based tactical system. Each battle takes place on a grid-based map where positioning and timing determine success. You can choose from ten distinct heroes, each with unique skills and passive abilities that cater to different playstyles—ranged attackers, melee tanks, healers, and support specialists. Every turn demands careful consideration: move too aggressively and your party risks being overwhelmed, play too cautiously and the enemy will slowly grind you down. The inclusion of limited resources and procedural map generation adds to the tension, forcing you to balance between pushing forward for rewards or retreating to conserve strength. It’s a structure that encourages strategy, adaptation, and long-term planning rather than brute force. In concept, Chaos Squad is rich with potential. The roguelite progression loop—explore, fight, upgrade, survive—gives the game a sense of constant forward motion. Treasures and equipment collected during expeditions can dramatically change how your squad performs in later stages, and no two playthroughs unfold the same way. The dark-fantasy setting, filled with grotesque creatures and ominous ruins, successfully evokes the atmosphere of cosmic horror. The world feels mysterious, dangerous, and unpredictable, which suits the game’s central theme of chaos. For fans of strategy games with a survival edge, it offers a fresh, if imperfect, interpretation of the genre. However, the game’s execution struggles to match its vision. While its mechanics are solid in theory, the balance and pacing can feel inconsistent. Some battles swing wildly in difficulty, relying more on random factors than on player skill or preparation. Bugs and technical issues further hinder the experience, ranging from interface glitches to crashes that disrupt progress. The artificial intelligence occasionally behaves erratically, making enemies alternate between reckless and passive behavior, which undermines the sense of tactical precision that turn-based games rely on. These flaws contribute to a sense of frustration, especially during longer runs where an unexpected bug or unfair encounter can erase hours of effort. Visually, Chaos Squad embraces a dark and foreboding aesthetic that complements its grim tone. The character and monster designs are imaginative, drawing inspiration from Cthulhu mythos and apocalyptic fantasy. The backgrounds—snowy peaks, barren wastelands, cursed forests—are atmospheric, though not particularly detailed. The game’s presentation reflects its indie roots: functional and moody, but lacking the polish of larger productions. The sound design does its job well enough, featuring ominous ambient music and combat effects that enhance the tension. Still, the overall atmosphere feels more promising than immersive, as the visuals and audio sometimes fail to fully support the weight of the setting’s horror-inspired storytelling. Despite its flaws, Chaos Squad’s underlying framework shows potential for growth. The hero system is diverse enough to allow for experimentation, and the combination of turn-based combat with roguelite progression creates satisfying moments of strategy when the systems align. The developers’ ambition is clear—they aim to craft a game where every choice carries consequences, where every encounter feels like a test of endurance. If future updates address its technical shortcomings, balance issues, and repetitive structure, it could evolve into a deeply rewarding experience for fans of the genre. As it stands, Chaos Squad is a game that feels caught between inspiration and imperfection. It offers intriguing mechanics, a compelling world, and a foundation that could support a rich tactical experience, but it struggles to maintain consistency. The result is a title that may frustrate as much as it fascinates, appealing mostly to those who enjoy experimenting with flawed but inventive indie projects. Beneath its rough edges lies a dark heart full of ambition—a world of chaos waiting to be refined into order. Rating: 4/10
