Reviews
I just want to start out by saying I do not post reviews very often, but after a fair amount of time in game and emailing the developer back and forth after playing the demo, I feel like I need to. I have been following Chaos for some time due to my love for "Souls-Like" games and the fact that this is a small one man indie studio piqued my interest more so than usual. The developer seems to be a pretty genuine guy and I do not just base this off of a few emails. He did a Podcast and Twitch stream awhile back speaking on Chaos and his journey making it. I "try" making games on the side and realize the sheer amount that it takes to build something from scratch, so forgive me if I am not as harsh as some reviewers are that expect every game to be AAA releases out of the gate. Anyways on to the actual review.
Title
Pro: I like the title screen and logo a lot and would love to see some effects emitting fire particles around the circular design. Con: I am still trying to figure out what "Chaos" ultimately means as there is not a tremendous amount of story involved and how it ties in to the actual game. There are some H.P. Lovecraft quotes scattered throughout so I wonder if it ties in with something from one of his creations.
Story
Pro: I found that you have a lot of background information more so on equipment than you do in the world. I like that each item you paint a picture of its origin. Con: Again, not a ton of story, just an opening cutscene that something is summoning some bad stuff and you are there to kill it. I would like to see some more back story as to what is going on. It doesn't have to have tons of interactions and over the top action shots, but something that you pepper around your levels to fill you in more with the lore of your world and some of it’s locations.
Cutscenes
Pro: Cutscenes are one of those things that too many and you're playing an RPG, not enough and you're lost. I think the cut scenes in the game are enough to point you in a general direction if you pay attention to the levels. Con: The actual cutscene quality at times was pretty bad and should be redone at some point.
Graphics
Pro: The graphics are not next-gen console, but are not bad either. Overall it was not something that bothered me after getting further into the game. Con: A lot of the large open areas have some slow down due to the sheer size of the level and in the distance things can look bad at times. I noticed in the
Underground Lake
a lot of bad clipping graphical issues with the water at times and just general screen tearing and mesh popping.
Level Design
Pro: After playing for a while I noticed that there was a definite feel of Dark Souls III with how you start out the game. It doesn't hold your hand by any means and gets right into the meat. There is a tutorial like feel for the first part of the game and then it kind of lets you go on your own and you will understand what I mean when you play. Con: I would like to see more consistency between looks of the game with assets. Again, understanding your one person and cutting corners but at times you can tell the difference of asset packs. Also your end game castle looks a lot like Hogwarts lol.
Enemy Mechanics
Pro: There is a fair amount of monsters and bosses scattered around each having their own type of attack patterns. Con: I would like to see more "Tells" when something is about to happen to help prevent aggravation due to not knowing what is going on and why I died. There are some cues here or there, but they need to be fleshed out further. I would also like to see some mix up with range enemies and not so many melee based.
Sound
Pro: I like how there is unique boss music per each boss and don't use the same thing over and over again. Con: Sometimes the volume can be too soft on some things while being too loud on others. This happens a lot when you go from playing the game to a cutscene.
Verdict
My final verdict is I genuinely enjoyed playing the game and hope to see you continue to work out the kinks to see what potential this game has going for it. It is rough around the edges at times, but I think if you continue putting work into balancing out some of the equipment along with continuing adjusting the combat you will have a solid 15-20+ hour game on your hands.
There is obviously a ton of effort that has gone into this game. Unfortunately, it just isn't very much fun. Souls-likes tend to live and die on their gameplay and the gameplay in this is extremely clunky and not enjoyable. I played as the sorcerer. Essentially, when you are casting you cannot move. Don't worry though because it won't matter until AFTER the first boss who will stomp towards you and then make zero other sounds. The controls are sluggish and the game just looks kind of bad. It is a promising first entry for a solo dev but my recommendation would be to work with a team on your next game or even polish this one a LOT more. https://youtu.be/Ud6MMbcqXzY
Great first attempt by a solo dev. I found after a few hours I was hooked and am currently pursuing 100% completion. Obviously it is a nod to Dark Souls but I have more fun playing this than Dark Souls, personally. Great game, and I'm glad to see the developer is actively updating things based on feedback from streamers and stuff.
Great game with a great atmosphere. Chaos takes you on a dark adventure which is well supplemented by it's lore. The gameplay is challenging and engaging, and allows you to change your play style to suit your needs. Solid variety in bosses and enemy types helps keep the game feeling fresh the entire way through. Chaos also features many hidden areas, bosses, and items so you are rewarded for exploring the well crafted world. Fun and challenging end to end.
This game is awesome! I love the homage it pays to souls-like games. Great game for a first time developer. Looking forward to what the future holds! Keep up the good work.
I'm only 3 hours in the game now when i'm writing this, so it might change when i beat it (if i beat it of course) So first impressions were not really good to be honest but it's also because i'm used to play with medium or high settings as my computer is not a beast. The textures were a bit poor and unpolished so i tried the "ultra" settings and it was much better. Even though i had to turn it back down to "high" when i reached the prison because the game was lagging A LOT ! But it might come from my machine, maybe. The controls and the combat feel slow and clunky, it took me some time to get used to it. I was actually about to rage quit when i encounter the Cyclop. And then i tried again, 2 more times and understood the mechanics and got him. So i thought "ok, let's continue and see" Right now i just killed the 3rd boss and i'm getting used to the gameplay and rythm of the whole thing. So basically i thought it was hard to get into as i was expecting some Dark Souls like experience and in a way it is a bit like Dark Souls, with less polish of course as it's made by one guy only and not a whole team I want to say thank you for doing this, thank you for the effort and congrats for your work. It's not perfect, it's note quite done yet but i'm enjoying this. I guess i'll send an email to the dev with some stuff that i noticed that could (i guess) easilly be fixed. EDIT : i just beat the game after 10 hours roughly and i have to say i really enjoy playing it until the end. I got more and more into it and i didn't care anymore about the unpolished aspect and other issues. I'll play NG+ now and try to get the last achievement i guess. Thanks for your work ! Keep on doing it !
I played 30 Minutes of this because that is all I could play. This game was so... unique that I made a garbage YT Video review just showing the first, starting, area. First off, I want to say that I am not a GOD at Souls-Like games, BUT I do enjoy them here and there. Secondly, There are better options, IF you want Souls-Like. Code Vein, The Surge (1 and 2), Dark Souls, Demon Souls, Bloodborne... yea. NOW FOR MY REVIEW!! (FOLLOW CHILLIOUS REVIEWS FOR MORE!!) To start off you see the splash screens and then the main menu, the main menu is fairly bland. AND it is worth mentioning that IF you play with a controller the mouse STOPS WORKING, It no longer responds to movement or clicks, instead the Left Joystick moves the cursor, and at sickening speed. The game also launched in Windowed Mode for me, which was annoying. Games should never start in windowed mode. So you start the game, New game, pick a name, I made my first character Fartimus, and his son Fartimus II was the character in the video I made. Playing on HIGH Graphics, everything looked LOW quality, textures looked AWFUL, the details on the characters were blurry, the lighting/shading were flat, it looked pre-2005, Halo CE looked better. Starting up, the game takes a while to load, and then froze for about a minute and then dropped me in. NOW going back, I want to say, the little art part of the intro, kinda cool, could hear little noise or music until the very end when the camera slow zooms on Krampus, Farting a BlackHole/Butthole into the sky. The art however, I liked it alot, not sure if it is original or ripped from somewhere else. Back to the game... Poorly Optomized, frame drops like no other, World is both too bright and dark at the same time, did not have similar sense of dread in the air or HORROR in the air like Dark Souls does, or any other souls-like that I have played. Game started at 1400 FPS, WOW, but then dropped to 5, and then stayed around 80, until I CHANGED THE RESOLUTION AND MADE IT FULL SCREEN, then the game froze, like it crashed... then started up again. Do you like responsive controls that respond when you click? Won;t find them here, they took a little bit too long to respond causing me to die to the lowest of Plebian enemies (I don't even die to that crap in DARK SOULS). Not to mention when an enemy combo attacks you... they walk THROUGH YOU and damage you regardless. It has poor collision. Enemies should not be able to walk through the player. Visually, the world left me feeling Meh to Alright, like it was cool, dragon flew across the screen and that looked SO AMAZING. Not kidding, it was cool AF, but then walking through the graveyard I phased through a tree, the mountains looked flat and I just lost the will to keep playing. Thus I made a video for youtube showing things like this off. Basic game design no-nos that were still in game in 1.2.1. NOW to close it all off, game DOES have potential, I see it, but it is not something I would recommend when people can buy Sekiro, Dark Souls, The Surge, Code Vein, Bloodborne... or you know, well done games. This is an indie game that has potential, and that is all I can say. If you are a dark souls fan, buy it, but imo, would not pay more than 5$ as this looks like a beta, or even an Alpha of a game that is yet to be done. Sorry dev, you tried, and I can see that. I hope you take this as constructively as possible. I wanted to leave a good review, but your game just did not do it for me.
this is the first game that i have played from a SOLO developer and i must say, it is pretty fun! sure set the bar high for other SOLO developers. graphics and movements are real smooth and they stay on top of the updates. you can also email bugs into the developers and they will fix them right away. overall really good quality! i assume the game is not 100 percent complete with how often it is updated which is not a bad thing. youre not buying this game expecting it to run like dark souls are you? no, but i admire the work thats been put into this game.
