This blatantly mimics much about Super Mario Land, from the level themes to the UI layout to the bosses to World 2-3 being an underwater shmup (that's the level I just finished before writing this). I think the trailer makes it pretty clear that this is all the game aspires to do, though, and it doesn't outright copy levels and it even offers new mechanics (character has a whip when health isn't low, health bar instead of mushroom or flower powerups, and there are hidden keys for getting the bonus stage), so it's not a 1:1 ripoff. Recommended on sale, it's a solid piece of fun if you liked SML and you just want more of that; just don't expect a meaty adventure.
Pros: it faithfully replicates the aesthetics of Super Mario Land to a T Cons: it faithfully replicates the aesthetics of Super Mario Land to a T
This one is a 'Yes' but with caveats. Baseline here is clearly Mario styled games. It doesn't even try to hide the fact that Mario is the inspiration. But there are differences: Pro: - Secrets, like so many secrets and placed sometimes so roughly they become a hindrance as you hit your head on invisible blocks all the time. Someone with a enterprising spirit should make guides where the secrets are. Starting from World 2-1 and forward they are not that straightforward to find. Annoying but intriguing also. Make random jumps to places and lo and behold likely there is a secret, but also perhaps a secret beyond that. Finding that top level exit key can get interesting. - Heart upgrades spice things. Bonus levels. 1UPs placed strategically before tough spots can give you a life line if you are having problems. - Generally a game that seems to reward trying out things to advance. Not bad for a small game like this. Saving system though is a hindrance here but you got Continues also after all lives are spent. - Pretty decent game on it's own. It doesn't just ride on Game Boy green-screen nostalgia too much. Con: - Platforming is harder. There are puzzles where you need to jump and land on a square and from there either jump again or drop down a square and jump again accurately. You get tons of extra lives but they are just as easily spent too with this kind of platforming so this is not that easy as it looks once you advance a bit further. - Bugs. Underground rooms that you cannot exit from -> Back to save point. - Limited menu controls. May follow the Game Boy theme but still i don't really care for no proper exit from the game and Esc for fullscreen is a function i would pass. I don't quite agree on normal price 5.89€ but any discount price and this one is worth it.
ENGLISH: A fresh game with a certain Mario vibe, but nothing compares to the classic and unbeatable original Mario from the Classic Game Boy, which, by the way, is the only one I like. In this case, we have a game that, in addition to the typical jumps to collect coins, also features an arcade mechanic where you have to hit enemies with a whip. The game itself is amazing. I love these kinds of games with this aesthetic. From the entire collection, these three are my favorites since I’m not really into puzzles or fighting games. The soundtracks are fantastic and, although inspired by the classics, they’re truly memorable. PLEASE MAKE MORE GAMES WITH SPACESHIPS AND ARCADE MECHANICS LIKE THIS! The only Mario game I’ve truly loved is Super Mario Land, both for its soundtrack and its unique gameplay. That’s why I’ve embraced this clone by RETSUZAN with great enthusiasm. The game features a graphical style clearly inspired by the Nintendo Game Boy but introduces completely new gameplay mechanics. The music is outstanding and immediately reminds me of the iconic Mario Land melody. The graphics are simple, just the way I like them, and the mechanics are very enjoyable. Perhaps the only downside is that some jumps feel a bit awkward, as shown at the end of the video where I couldn’t reach the other platform. An excellent game that has immediately earned a spot in my favorites collection on Steam.

Cham the Cat Adventure is a charming homage to Super Mario Land, one that features many connections to the game that inspired it while doing enough different to have its own identity. The game looks a lot like SML, down to the level motifs looking very similar to their SML counterparts. We even get a couple of horizontally-scrolling shmup sections. The music is also very reminiscent of SML's soundtrack, with tunes clearly following the same musical themes and instrumentation (the tune when you beat a boss in particular seems to come dangerously close to being a copy-paste from SML). Playing this will probably stir up some nostalgia if you played SML in your childhood. Where Cham strays a bit more from SML is in its primary mechanics (which works to its benefit). Instead of Small Mario, Big Mario and Superball Mario, we have Melee Cham, Whip Cham and Projectile Whip Cham. It's nice that Cham always has attack options besides jumping on enemies (which she can also do), and her whip attacks are more intuitive and effective that the Superball. In yet another nod to SMW, her whip can pick up coins (100 coins gets you a 1-up, naturally). The platforming feels remarkably similar to SMW, with near-identical run and jump physics. Even the hit detection being slightly off for coin collection is here. There are bottomless pits with enemies jumping straight up out of them, enemies that jump towards you (pausing between jumps), consecutive moving platforms... there are times when it feels like I'm navigating a remix of SMW. When I got to the cave level, I wondered if there would be a hidden block that would allow me to walk on top of the cave roof like in SMW... I was delighted when that turned out to be the case. Also like SMW, at the end of each level there is a harder-to-get-to top exit that gives you a chance at a bonus stage. Unlike SMW, accessing this exit also requires finding a key hidden somewhere in the level. The ending hints towards an extra level if all the keys are found, encouraging re-playing and more thoroughly exploring the game. The bonus stages are also a little more involved than SMW's, as you ride a pig through coins and power-ups. I don't think someone needs to have played SMW to appreciate Cham the Cat Adventure, but fans of Mario's first GameBoy game are likely going to find a lot to like here. I'm also a fan of this dev's GameBoy output in general (these games genuinely seem like they would be able to run on GameBoy hardware) as I have a soft spot for the monochrome aesthetic and chip tunes. I have two gripes, though: No button remapping option (you have to use A & B when I want to use X & A), and no achievements. Still. I had a lot of fun with Cham the Cat Adventure and recommend it to fans of GameBoy gaming.
It's basically Super Mario Land.
途中のステージでシューティングが挟まるのが好き。あの頃のゲームっぽさを感じる
