Earnest Evans Collection

Can't believe there are no reviews up for this yet. Not a fan of limited run games business practices but I snapped at the chance to get this simply because it's much more affordable than hunting down the cartridges and cds, not disappointed, Earnest Evans is janky as all hell but extremely interesting from a technical perspective. El Viento is an actually good game, and the included Sega CD beat em up is a nice touch, more Sega CD releases on steam are always welcome.

I hate to say this, but I don't recommend this collection. I'm Earnest Evans' strongest soldier, and this collection is not worth the price for what it has on offer. The emulation isn't the greatest, featuring occasional graphical error and sound popping. As well as emulation issues, there just isn't much on offer to justify a purchase. There's scans of the manuals and small pieces of original scans for the promotional artwork, but that's all this collection has in terms of extra features. Limited Run Games is also an awful company. You can just look up scandal after scandal with Limited Run.

Mainly bought this to see if I should duble dip and get the physical release by Limited Run Games, but after trying out each game, I think I'll save my money towards a future LRG preorder. Should I change my mind, I'll edit the review. That's not to say the Earnest Evans Trilogy is bad. Each have their strengths. Earnest Evans: Good game with great soundtrack, hampered by janky controls. This goes for both Mega Drive & Sega CD versions. El Viento: Probably my favourite of the bunch. Kept getting killed by a tank. No seriously, that's the first boss in the game. Annet Returns: An okay beat 'em up. Overall, if you're unsure, get it during a sale. But if you love the games, buy this AND the physical version to support physical media. So yeah, cautious recommendation.

The complete lack of display options, not even a way to get out of fullscreen mode at all (even alt-enter doesn't work) makes it evident this was not intended for a release outside of consoles & the PC version was very last-minute & half-assed. I'd be grateful we got a PC release at all, but the price is way too high for the lack of effort that went into it. Get it on sale, a big sale.

Rewind feature is so poorly tought out that it becomes unusable. Another retro collection with worse features than any emulation solution out there...

A collection of mostly terrible games. Each of the games in this collection had potential but is let down by poor execution. Earnest Evans looks okay at first but ultimately reveals itself as a low quality Castlevania rip-off with a character who moves like a puppet, poor controls and cheap difficulty spikes. El Viento is probably the best game in the collection but again is ruined by cheap difficulty and poor level design. Anett Returns is a playable but rubbish beat-em up with poor hit detection, weak graphics and terrible enemy AI. Given that this originally came out years after Golden Axe and Streets of Rage the developers should be embarrassed by how poorly it compares. The only good point is that the games seem largely well ported although even here there are issues. I did encounter slowdown in a few instances and the rewind feature is very imprecise compared to other Limited Run game collections I have played. Just avoid this.
