In A Nutshell
🔵 Pros + Excellent physics-based puzzler gameplay, always fun and exciting. + Minimalist but clean and pleasant graphical style. + Interesting tools, usable in many different ways to complete levels. + Level Editor and Workshop integration to share and play levels online. 🔴 Cons - Not a lot of content in the base game. In Cefore you will play as an engineer tasked with recovering alien artifacts (blue cubes) from several places, using explosive charges and various other tools to get the job done. These include: grappling hooks to attach blocks to, force-fields to merge many blocks together, remote-controlled drones, and of course explosives, lots of them, in various sizes. The game starts off very easily, explaining basics and how tools work, to only get progressively more difficult, adding new challenges like Red Blocks that do not allow you to collect Artifacts if present in the collection areas, moving contraptions, and generally much more complex level designs. The good thing is that there are a lot of different ways to solve a single level, as the game gives you total freedom of movement and tool placement: combine this with decently realistic physics, and you have your imagination as only limit on how to solve a puzzle. Generally speaking puzzles never get very complex or intricate, they can offer a good degree of challenge on later stages, but do not expect a complexity on the levels of Portal or other well-known puzzle games. The campaign only has 26 levels in it, which can appear a lot, but half of those are mostly tutorials or very quick to complete, leaving a total content amount of 2-3 hours maximum to get the whole thing done. Luckily, community levels are quite numerous and can offer a lot of additional, and possibly more challenging content, once done with the story. Overall, Cefore is a very pleasant and engaging game to play, the only problem is there isn't enough of it! I recommend this title to all puzzle game lovers, they will not be disappointed.
In-depth Feature Analysis
🎮 Gameplay The gameplay of Cefore consists in solving different puzzles in each level. To do so, you have a set amount of tools in each stage, and will have to use them wisely in order to round up all the Artifacts in the collection area (deployable wherever you want). Tools can be freely placed onto blocks, rocks, metal, nearly everywhere really, and also their effects can be combined together to solve tougher puzzles. Each tool has specific functions: explosives generally are used to move many blocks in a direction or destroy structures, while force-fields merge many blocks together as if they are a single block, avoiding them being scattered because of explosions. Grappling hooks pull things around, while drones can transport blocks in the air and release them, but have limited fuel. Other than the (short) campaign itself, the game has a Level Editor mode featuring all the assets and props seen in the campaign, and also some new ones, to create custom levels to share with the community. The developers probably aimed for this to be the main source of content for the game, and I have to say there is a decent amount of levels in the workshop, though not all of them are playable or well made. 📖 Story There isn't a real story at all, except for some scattered dialogues with your boss (or colleague), introducing you to at least what's going on and why you're blowing up stuff left and right. But yes, don't expect any form of story or lore, because simply there isn't any. 👊 Combat System N/A 💰 Content & Pricing The base game offers around 2-3 hours of content and is priced at 10€ base tag, while Community levels are quite numerous and can offer an indefinite amount of additional playtime depending on how many will be made in the future. If you decide to become a creator yourself, making levels from scratch takes quite some time and also can be additional content, for those who like doing so. In conclusion, i'd say the game offers good enough gameplay and content to be purchased at full cost without regretting it. 🔗 Balance & Challenge Challenge in the base campaign is on moderate levels overall, with a few puzzles really bending your mind a bit, while Community levels have a wide range of difficulties and some surely can prove hard.
Technical Analysis
🎥 Graphics Minimalist style without any complex model, no amazingly detailed textures, or enchanting effects, but I have to say this type of style is suited well for this game, and takes quite some inspiration from Besiege. Physics, explosions and destruction are well done and can lead to some spectacular outcomes. 🔊 Sound Average sound effects and voice acting, with no particular mentions to make. 🔩 Performance & Stability Performance is solid for being an Indie Unity game, surprisingly not consuming outrageous amounts of resources like many other Unity games usually do, sign of an above average optimization level. [i7 4820K, 16GB RAM, GTX 1080, 1440p]. 💻 Artificial Intelligence N/A 🏠 Quality of Life Menus and interface are well polished, controls are responsive, and generally everything works well. There are no problems in this aspect of the game. 🐛 Bugs & Issues Apart from the cursor disappearing once for some reason, there was no other bug worth mentioning, or any particular issue.
Conclusion
Cefore is a really nice little Indie puzzle game, that doesn't have a lot of base content, but can still deliver a fun experience and has growth possibilities thanks to the community-made content. A solid Indie game you won't regret getting. Very bad dev: Does not listen to buyers, and the devs have little cofidence in their game. It is early access, move on, looks cute , plays like trash. Many more games to see. Normely, I wouldn't even comment but this dev team seems to have bipolar. I mean they made it clear they are a teamof two. They openly curse and call people names and use vulgar profanity. Then the same day say they are nice and welcome support. Stay far away from this trash. ITS JUST GAME [developer] 10 hours ago We are a team of two you ♥♥♥♥ing nugget ♥♥♥♥er. We have to make decisions you idiot. Wake the ♥♥♥♥ up this isnt some triple AAA budget. Lack of dedication and love for our game? Try spending several thousand dollars on something on a period of more than 2 years if you dont love it. ♥♥♥♥ head get the ♥♥♥♥ out. Would you want to support a company and hand over your cash to people like that?
TL;DR:
Great artstyle, cutesy audio, fun gameplay, and a decent price make this a game worth getting. Even in the alpha stage, this has full game quality (though only 18 levels can be played in alpha). Launch was a bit rough with no game files present, but forgivable as Devs worked hard to get the problem fixed within 45 min. Feels like a $15+ game, when it's going for $9.
First Impression Gameplay:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-2i86xeuPc
Detailed Review:
The game starts simple, introducing you to game mechanics and giving some context to the game. I dislike annoying tutorials, but this wasn't too bad, as it actually has you do stuff to learn. The main object to the game is to get certain data cubes into a small radius for collection. Sounds simple, but level progress in difficulty. Tools are unlocked as you go to aid in your task. So far I've unlocked various size bombs, a grappling winch, a device which welds blocks together, and balloons. Levels don't take terrible long to complete, but feel satisfying once you do. Art style is very similar to Beseige. From the plain white backdrop, to the pink tress you see throughout levels. It does pretty good though. Audio is very good with some cutesy voice acting. Sounds like a cartoon character in a toddlers TV show. Controls are what you expect (which is good), with no issues to report. I did not experience any bugs, glitches, or in game errors. Only thing worth mentioning is a not so smooth launch with missing game files. Devs got the issue fixed pretty quick. I'm surprised at how flushed out the game is while only being in alpha. Sometimes you don't see as much polish in completed games. All in all, I recommend Cefore. It's fun, cutesy, and at times, challenging. At $9, it's a solid buy.
FANTASTIC GAME! but... It's not worth picking up yet simply because it doesn't have enough content atm. There are only 18 levels, which is about 1-2 hours of gameplay. Unless you're looking for a neat physics sandbox I'd pass on this until they add more.
25 levels of pushing things together without actually solving the intended puzzle only 2 levels actually require solving the puzzle level 28 is a static screen telling you to play community created levels (BETA feature) no way to skip a level if you are stuck. bug: stuck on 'you died' screen with no retry or any other button, have to exit out and start over tutorial. bug: item duplication bug: moving cubes just by placing tools and not having to spend them bug: able to move cubes just by running into them, although slow.
Cefore is one of those games that you will either love or hate, as I personally feel it hard to find a middle ground on. Myself personally, I like the puzzle conception games and find Cefore to be refreshing and new! However when it comes to learning the new tools and following the tutorials, they seem just a bit lacking and frustrating to say the least. While I have not played Cefore to it full potential, I am willing to say that the tutorials are just a learning curve and in time will be over come or adjusted. If you are looking for good replay value, graphics and FX, this game has it all and the fact that it is in early access only just makes you wonder what else is really left to come! Total thumbs up for Cefore!
Good puzzle sandbox strategy game with an explosive twist. I like the minimalist graphics and the good tutorial. A game for all the future explosion masters! More content via workshop integration, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sR3GFe7-FN0
I played Cefore in the first Alpha release on steam back in september, and I have to say its still a fun game. There's a lot more improved in the early access release and with passionate devs that are quick to make fixes I most certainly see myself playing this more and more as more updates come out. As previously mentioned it's in early access and for that reason I spend a majority of my time trying to find funny bugs, glitches and exploits to send to the devs via the super active Discord. Of course devs are more then happy to help and laugh alongside you when it comes to these such things. Gameplay is straight forward and has a very rewarding feeling when you've completed a level, which is extra rewarding when a level is beat in a not so typical way. The progression system presents with you very cute introductions to mechanics of the game, so as to say it has very nice level pacing. The sandbox creates a great oppurtunity to be highlighted for your creative structures, as you can turn the last 10 seconds into a gif to be displayed on the main menu, not just to yourself but everyone looking at the main menu. Not to mention it's pretty fun to just mess around in. TL;DR its a good game, it's in alpha, you can have fun with devs. p.s. you can get a hat of your own choosing added to the game, i.e. thread with the hat I requested
