Causality ——
Neat, Novel, & New
Having slogged through so many puzzle games recently, Causality managed to reinvigorate my interest in isometric puzzles with its novel time manipulation mechanic. This bittersweet feature will have you pulling your hair out as you try to navigate multiple characters through time paradoxes, butt loads of switches, death traps, enemies, teleporters and more. This 60 level pit of glory and frustration is sure to provide veteran puzzle solvers a unique and tough challenge.
Playing With Time
Starting out, Causality’s time manipulation seems to be just a glorified rewind mechanic. Initially, clickable directional tiles are the major challenges, populating the levels to help redirect oblivious, auto-moving astronauts to their destinations. As you progress, crazier obstacles will be added, compounding to create some semblance of difficulty. Several levels later, you’ll be crying when you see spatial teleporter tiles. What makes these tiles so unique is that they aren’t quite teleporters in a traditional sense. Causality provides a clone image that will eject from the teleporter’s exit before you actually step onto the teleporter’s entrance. Sometimes the clone will eject 3 spaces before the original enters, while precise finagling may get the clone to eject 10 or more spaces ahead of time. This clone is essentially a fully-fleshed character that is free to interact with anything. Naturally, you may be thinking that it’s odd to create a clone if you haven’t entered the teleporter yet. What if you decide not to go into the teleporter after positioning your clone? In adherence to the law of time and space travel, in agreement with any logical thinker, Causality will erase the clone if you decide not to commit to the teleporter. Furthermore, the game’s leeway with the time you get to spend with two copies of one astronaut may lead to a time paradox – a situation where both copies (original and clone) head towards the teleporter entrance. At the bottom of every level is a nodal timeline, outlining how many steps you have remaining to get to the goals. The timeline also notes the points at which certain traps or static hazards will activate. One of the biggest uses of the timeline is determining the beginning and end of a teleporter “feedback” loop – how many steps you have with your clone before the original disappears. In addition, the complex nature of teleporters will, more often than not, suddenly create clones in the middle of the level while you are altering directional tiles. The timeline helps visualize things and allow you to go back to the point at which the clone spawns on the teleporter exit.
Complete Gameplay Walkthrough Playlist
Do NOT refer to this walkthrough unless you’ve tried everything; it’d definitely ruin the fun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3mBo2R0gW4&list=PLeavCsRFiP57OhUA0Ge-UPQR5vrtEAUnq&index=1
Verdict
From what I can remember, the majority of the levels will be relatively easy (YMMV), able to be completed within minutes. A bulk of the levels will take a bit longer to solve, upwards of 15 minutes or more depending on whether you can or can’t see a viable path. The remaining handfuls/bonus levels will take quite a while – they doubled/tripled my overall playtime, and I still haven’t completed every bonus level (I got stuck on the final level for ~3 hours until I was spoonfed a path). These devious levels are extremely much more complex than the standard levels. Although I really enjoy the teleporters, they unfortunately seem to be the only true time-manipulating challenge. I definitely wish there were others, like something similar to Ratchet & Clank’s Time Puzzles, but for such a neat and novel game, I can’t find too much fault here. A part of me wants to recommend this game to others just so they can experience the hellish levels I managed to overcome, but setting my ego aside, Causality is much more than its mind-wracking torture. The colorful backgrounds create an immersive experience and an optional color-blind mode adds some nice polish too. This makes it easy for me to recommend Causality to any fans of novel puzzle games.
Causality is a 2.5D puzzler where you control the passage of time. Your astronauts are perpetually running along a network of catwalks and you have to use the arrows to redirect them to avoid monsters and open/close barriers to allow everyone to reach their own destinations before the timeline runs out. You can use LT/RT on the controller or simply drag the mouse to rewind or ff, both methods feel easy and satisfying. There is no real-time clock so you can take as long as you like. Move it forward a bit, decide that's not gonna work, go back a bit and try something different etc. I imagine a dance choreographer would be good at this.
Sound & Vision
The graphics are nothing short of stunning. There are not a whole lot of elements but it's all presented with subtle reflections and transparency that really gives it a smooth, rich ambiance. There's no music but a haunting, spacey sound with robotic sound effects which all suits the mood nicely.
Menus
The level overview looks good too, with sparkly tiles floating in starry space. There's volume control, fullscreen or configurable window sizing, language options - yes, you can change to various languages just for the few words on the options screen - and a colour blind mode. They clearly want the game to be accessible to everybody... even Mac and Linux users (like myself)!
Difficulty
There are 60 levels divided into 4 sections. Section 1 is a lot of fun but didn't give me too much trouble. Halfway through section 2 I started to struggle and from there it gets steadily tougher. These are hard puzzles, not for those looking for a quick and easy route to 100% achievements. The teleport function deserves a special mention. It has a variable time setting so that sometimes you have a ghost of yourself travelling at the same time, other times not. Wrapping your brain around this is a task in itself. The only downside is the linear level progression. You have to solve one level before you can move on to the next, so if you get stuck (which you certainly will at some point) you have no option to try a different puzzle to refresh your brain and then return to this one later. It can get frustrating, knowing there's a lot more of the game available but out of reach. [UPDATE] You can now skip ahead one level! Thanks devs!
Value
This is RIDICULOUSLY underpriced! It's worth 2 or even 3 times the asking price. OK, so it doesn't have too much replay value but the production quality and level design belongs in a much higher price bracket. The hard challenge of later levels will keep you occupied for many hours.
Steam
Achievements - one for each completed section plus several for completing certain levels in a limited number of moves. Steam Cloud. No Trading Cards yet.
Verdict
I have to say, the Steam store page doesn't do this game justice. I was expecting a quick, cheapo puzzler with a clunky menu system to keep me amused for an hour or two then forgotten. I was gobsmacked at the high quality of the whole thing. It really does have a WOW factor as soon as you launch it. Needless to say, I STRONGLY recommend Causality. It's a tough challenge with creative level design, it looks gorgeous and the price is a bargain. If you do like this game I also recommend Induction, another good quality timeline-based puzzler.
If you enjoy puzzles, you would like this game a lot. The whole point of the game is using time travel to get through the puzzles, where you have your characters go through portals into the past during the same puzzle, essentially causing other events to happen simultaneously. The game is a handful of hours to play, depending on how well you are at figuring out the puzzles. The game does not really give you much direction for most of the puzzles, though sometimes you will know how to start out (i.e., you will see that you lose the puzzle if a given character goes in any direction except for one at the beginning, etc.). There are 4 different sets of puzzles, with different gameplay mechanics. Each puzzle set has 15 levels, where the first 10 "complete" the set, and the other 5 are bonus levels with more difficult puzzles. I think that the last set of the game is almost the easiest, actually, because of the mechanic it adds into the game. The enemy makes it more obvious what directions you cannot use at different times. The graphics of the game are simple, but interesting. Minimalist, essentially. I do not really remember much sound or music from playing a few days ago, so I guess that is not really a big part of the game. Causality can be really, really difficult to figure out, but it's worth trying.
Great game, here's a let's play I did https://youtu.be/yQuFJW6y7jI
A neat little puzzle game :) Impressions: The mechanics do an awesome job with screwing with the player's mind. There's weird time-traveling and cloning teleports, paradoxes mixed with somewhat more classical switches and falling tiles. This is probably how I'd sum up the game in one sentence actually. A proper ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of a mix of calssic and modern puzzle game mechanics. Causality definitely tries to do something new here but builds it on solid foundations of the genre. Content: There's 4 sets of puzzles, 15 levels each. You need to beat first 10 puzzles of each set to progress to another one. The levels are designed in a way that the obligatory 10 are somewhat easier than the optional 5 which can really force you to spend more time on them. That said the game isn't long and doesn't overstay its welcome. It took me just a few hours to beat the mandatory 40 puzzles. Graphics: Visualy it's simple but good looking. Slowly animated backgrounds don't distract you from cracking the puzzles presented to you in the foreground. It feels rather minimalistic but that's all that's needed. Issues: Now onto the flaws. For a game that does a good job at steady pacing of the difficulty curve it really sucks at explaining things to you. It could *really* use some form of an as-you-play tutorial to explain some of its more innovative mechanics. Meanwhile you’re thrown into it and left to figure it all out by yourself. Which might sound like a fun sort of a challenge but sometimes leaves you guessing and making random choices just to “see what happens” instead of thinking what to do next. And that’s what puzzle games should be about. Performance and ethics: Technically everything is perfect. No framedrops, no bugs or crashes. Great job on part of the devs here. Also kudos for no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with pre-order stuff. It’s a good game that doesn’t need silly marketing to appeal to the fans of the genre. Summary: Overall, Causality is very solid, especially at such an attractive price. If the devs have even more creative mechanics in mind I’d definitely like to play some downloadable content for it.
