По итогу игра оставила весьма приятное впечатление, и я могу смело порекомендовать Cards of Patience всем любителям необычных карточных пасьянсов. cards of patience attempts to merge good old solitaire with good old rpg elements and permanent progression between runs. it's a very amateurish attempt though, as I expected from the store page, full of issues of varying seriousness. the solitaire part is simply finding cards on random boards that are either one above or one below the card currently on display. the deck is endless, you defeat the enemy when the board is cleared up. combat is turn-based, drawing the next card prompts the enemy to do its thing, already shown during your turn, so you can prepare (or not). it can be nothing, hurting you, manipulating the cards, and so on. even though there are not many animations (except for the gambler's spells, they need to be instant), gameplay is still not smooth and quick, feels sluggish with all the waiting for the enemy to do mostly inconsequential (and often unfortunate) things. cards, instead of having the usual suits, possess one of four icons that represent resources, plus whatever status effect they might have. gathering enough resources lets you use spells, as many times as you can afford and want within the same turn. they can restore health, manipulate cards, give potions, etc. potions aren't the only items, there's armor and various other things that provide some sort of benefit. you can carry 4 potions and 4 items, they don't stack, so multiple copies of the same thing take up multiple slots. outside solitaire levels you're presented with decisions at every turn. depending on available options you can fight, open a treasure chest for items and gold, grab a random potion, enter a shop or use a healing well. there's a boss at the end of the road, which I somehow reached after a few attempts and without any upgrades and beat it on the first try. rng, am I right? the 'overworld' (for lack of a better term) is also where spells for the current run can be upgraded with gold. higher levels mean more resources, so you might not get to use them as often as before, but they're obviously more potent. this is also where items can be sold with right click, whether you're in a shop or not. in fact, it even works during combat. diamonds are the other resource, used to unlock permanent upgrades. they're rewarded for defeating enemies (and look like pearls to me), though I didn't always get one and sometimes got more. it probably depends on combat difficulty, which still doesn't explain why it's not always awarded. there are 4 classes to choose from, 2 need to be unlocked with diamonds, along with more starting hp, gold and a bunch of other stuff for increased survivability. the presentation would be fine, but enemy design is really bad. some sort of rabbit? a big white mouse with a scarf? a chess piece? but also a big bad wolf, an orc and a magic crystal and whatnot, so I guess it's supposed to be serious(ish) but it's just a messy mess. music is nothing special, sfx is a mixed bag, there are separate volume settings and a few languages, but only in the main menu, not while playing. no windowed mode or resolutions, alt+enter only produces a non-resizable window, so please make your way to the windows registry and change it yourself, as the developer can't be bothered to provide basic functionality. progress is also stored there, btw. further issues include spelling mistakes and not being able to go back from character select to the main menu. tooltips are inconsistent as well, not available on character select or in the collection where you can check found items and defeated enemies. they could show names and how many of each enemy you killed, and stats would be fun, like number of runs, wins, enemies killed overall, potions drank, etc. another thing I found unfortunate is you can't have more health than the starting amount. I expected potions to increase it further during the run, then back to 10 for the next attempt. alas, nope. also noticed random bugs, like cards not flipping over, having enough resources but the spell remaining inactive, the dice not disappearing after using that spell, etc. further bad news if you want to or have to quit, as there's no mid-run saving and single battles can already drag on way too long, let alone complete runs. the dev couldn't implement it properly but said runs don't take long (which is simply not true), so he ditched it, incompetence wins again. there's not even an exit button anywhere outside the main menu, have to press esc in a completely mouse-driven game. and there's more: can't replace one of the 4 items or potions from a chest or potion event if your inventory is full. right click sells one, sure, and it works while the event is being examined to see if it's something better, but even if you sell something, the new item will disappear into thin air instead of landing in your pocket. if you're full, it does the same, of course. the shop works fine, can't buy if you're full, sell something, buy item, done. nothing wrong with a simple concept, it can still provide plenty of (or at least some) joy, variety, even depth, but this one has too many issues to be recommendable and it's often more tedious than fun.
Reviewing card games is what we do!
Cards of Patience is a lightweight mix of roguelite and solitaire. The enemy design is a bit problematic, and the upgrade system is flimsy but for its price it's a decent game. I did wish it played a bit faster and solved the issue with dead turns where you wait for a good card. The gameplay is essentially drawing a card and picking from the board a card higher or lower than the drawn card. This replaces your drawn card which means you can chain cards. Each card also has a symbol which corresponds to attributes. When getting cards off the board you earn those attributes which charge up your skill which usually helps you get a chain going. There are also items and potions which provide you with passive benefits or give you attribute boosts. Those aspects work all fine and well. The upgrades though can be a bit problematic. Often times upgrading increases the cost of the skill which makes it much much harder to play and get the ball rolling. What's worse is this new cost is not communicated pre-purchase. The upgrades themselves sometimes work in a slightly different way that the original skill which can be circumstantially worse. Monster design is the biggest problem. There are some monsters that hit like a truck and because of the RNG nature of the card draw, it's possible to get wiped off before drawing a good card to start removing cards from the board and gather resources. On the other hand, some enemies are easily cheesed like the timebomb one by simply placing positive effects on the available cards. Luckily all of those issues can be patched out and once addressed I am sure it will become a much better game.
The positive
+ Simple mechanics that work. You can go straight into the game and play without tutorials but still find some challenging parts. + Items, potions and skill. These all add another layer of decision making which make the game much more fun.
The neutral
* EDIT: This was fixed. Skill upgrades. It can be a real letdown upgrading a skill and then only finding out it's too expensive to use anymore. Upgrading multiple skills at once can un-intuitively lead to a death sentence. * Dead turns. Sometimes you are out of resources and there are a few cards remaining on the board which devolves into hoping you draw the right numbered card and pressing end turn until you do. Doesn't happen too often and you can plan for it to a degree, but wish there was a more elegant solution for this.
The negative
- Monster design. I am not keen on the current monster design. Some chose actions that are not a threat and make no sense (e.g. exploding non-existsing bombs), some can be cheesed while some do too much consistent damage in a game where luck plays a big role to get off the ground.
Conclusion:
Small, lightweight game that's simple to learn and fun for its price. Some things could be improved, but the core gameplay is solid yet simple. It's a fun card game. It has a lot of replayability as you get to buy a lot of upgrades. It's also quite challenging, so it's definitely good for a couple of hours. Worth the money.
Solitaire meets rougelite and it actually works. It's a fun and easy to learn cardgame with quick runs. Each enemy requires a different strategy and the classes and items enable different playstyles. Currently the balancing feels a little bit off, but the game has an active and engaging developer behind it who is always open for feedback and known for quick fixes.
If you've ever played Solitarica, you'll see a lot that's familiar in this game. However, Cards of Patience does not have some of the QoL features Solitarica does, which makes this game just a step beneath in my opinion. The concepts are the same -- you advance along a pathway to defeat enemies until you get to the boss. Okay, so that's what every game in this genre does. But Solitarica doesn't allow you a choice of pathway, while CoP does, in a sort of Slay The Spire sort of way. Both games also feature element-building which you can trade for effects and spells to play on cards in battle. But there, the differences become a little more profound. In Solitarica, enemies will give advance notice of their intentions, with some actions being real punishers -- but CoP does not do that. You don't know what the enemy will do. And, since there don't appear to be enemy descriptions in CoP (at least not in my limited play), it's a total crapshoot as to what you're going to get until you've seen the enemies a few times and get to know their capabilities. Additionally, the spells and passive items don't seem to generate a lot of synergy, which is a nice element of Solitarica. You build with a little more purpose in that game. Also, there are a lot of "dead turns" in CoP which leads to an RNG race to see which side can get what they need to advance. It's challenging, progression is hard, and it takes awhile to get a character to the point where its viable. These are all classic roguelike traits and this game does them well. With a little more attention to the small things, though, you'd have an even better game. It's good. It can be better. Thumbs up for the challenge, with the hope that any future patches fill up the small holes in the game play.
awful ripoff of Solitairica
I bought this cheap on sale, not realizing that it's an extremely low quality clone of Solitairica (which is fun, but you should play the mobile version). Whereas Solitairica has great art this appears to be public domain clip art and there's no animation. More importantly even the mechanics are worse, most obviously in how powerful enemy attacks don't seem to take a few turns to activate like they do in Solitairica so you get no time to prepare. I like unique card games even if they have zero-budget art, but this is just a pale copy of a better game. Stay away from it.
10/10 Klondike/Patience (sort of) combined with simple random-generated Dungeon-Diving. Starts card game in-progress against enemy. Discard from Line into Pile while managing items, potions and spells. Work through dungeon to boss. Bosses not easy. Upgrade character after game with diamonds. Saves character development from game to game.
Easy to learn, hard to master. Cards of patience is a fun card game.
