This is another bit of weird junkware assimilated by DIG Games and published as a "minimum viable product" on Steam. It's possible one of the worst shoot 'em up/bullet hell games ever made, with graphics that look bad for pixelcrap. I personally think it's truly remarkable when people take something that's bad and somehow manage to make it even worse.
The godawful visuals are fully representative of the rest of the game, sloppy controls, painfully slow bullet cycle times, floatiness... it's unpleasant to play.
I think it might have been a joke game or something... the tutorial for the controls just says "Work it out yourself", which is pretty rude. It makes you wonder if they genuinely thought this was a game for gamers, or if it's an exercise in publishing garbage onto Steam Direct just to pollute the store. Some developers do this for a living, and it's bad for everyone.
DIG Games have a known history of trying to scam people into paying them money for someone else's work, through this account or through closely linked/alt accounts. One example of DIG Games doing this is [url=https://store.steampowered.com/app/1022040]Candy Mandy[/url], which is really the "[url=https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/templates/systems/match-3-jelly-garden-kit-43260]Match 3 Jelly Garden Kit[/url]" asset, written by the actual developers, Candy Smith.
Taking this shovelware seriously as if it was a genuine attempt to make a game, it doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
The game only displays in 4:3 pillarboxed aspect ratio, due to the age of the game, it predates the 16:9 widescreen gaming standard established back in 2006. It's possible they're marketing this towards people using an old CRT they found in a dumpster, or this game is being specifically marketed towards people gaming on PC's from 1995... either way, this isn't really acceptable in the modern era of PC gaming. It's obviously not going to look right on a modern 16:9 gaming display.
A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result.
The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts.
Those technical flaws drag this game well below the minimum quality standards expected of a modern PC game.
The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was [b]only 4 players[/b]. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 130 million gamers on Steam and well over 140,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
Next is pricing and value. Is this game worth buying from among the 140,000+ games on Steam?
Captain Jackson is relatively cheap at $2 USD, but it's not worth it. This is also competing with over 14,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
There's enough defects and quality problems with this game that it's really impossible to recommend to gamers.
Finally, I'm here to try help save gamers time and money by filtering out the noise and substandard games... there's up to 50 games launched on Steam Direct every day! They aren't all great... most of them suck. If you don't agree with my assessment of the defects in this game, go ahead and buy it... maybe you'll find the same defects I did, maybe not. Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date).
