Good game, bad sequel to the hit horror classic Candyman. When will Hollywood learn these sequel cash grabs are never as good as the original.

pixel art platformer with simple movement mechanics, the complexity of the game comes from enemy placement being similar to bullet hell and essentially requiring you to do perfectly timed jumps to dodge swarms of enemies. Pretty cute art style!

This is a pretty fun minimalist platformer but I HATE the fact that you can't save.

Candyboy is a retro-inspired side-scrolling platformer developed and published by Staring Skull Studio that pays homage to the design philosophy of classic 8-bit era games. Released as a free title on Steam, the game embraces simplicity, nostalgia, and challenge, drawing clear inspiration from the platforming adventures that defined early console gaming. Rather than offering an expansive campaign with modern mechanics, Candyboy focuses on delivering a short but focused experience centered on precise movement, careful timing, and the playful theme of Halloween candy collecting. The premise of the game is deliberately lighthearted and whimsical. Set during Halloween night, the story follows a small character named Candyboy whose mission is to gather as much candy as possible while navigating a neighborhood filled with unexpected dangers. What begins as a simple quest for sweets quickly turns into a hazardous journey, as the streets are populated with hostile creatures and mischievous bullies that attempt to stop Candyboy at every turn. The narrative itself remains minimal and mostly serves as a backdrop for the platforming gameplay, but the Halloween theme adds charm and personality to the overall experience. Gameplay revolves around traditional side-scrolling platform mechanics where players guide Candyboy through a series of levels filled with obstacles, enemies, and collectible treats. Movement is built around simple controls that allow the character to run and jump across platforms while avoiding hazards scattered throughout the environment. The stages require players to carefully time their jumps, anticipate enemy movement patterns, and navigate narrow pathways that demand precise positioning. The design closely mirrors the style of classic platformers where mastering the layout of each stage becomes the key to progressing successfully. One of the more unusual aspects of Candyboy is its pacifist approach to platforming. Unlike many platformers where the protagonist can defeat enemies through attacks or special abilities, Candyboy has no offensive options. The character cannot fight back against enemies and must rely entirely on agility and awareness to survive. This design choice changes the tone of the gameplay significantly. Instead of focusing on combat, the player’s main goal becomes evading enemies and finding safe routes through the levels. This emphasis on avoidance creates a unique rhythm where players must carefully read enemy behavior and react quickly to sudden threats. The enemies themselves play an important role in shaping the challenge of each stage. Various creatures and antagonists appear throughout the levels, each behaving in slightly different ways. Some enemies patrol back and forth along the ground, while others move unpredictably or approach from the air. Because Candyboy cannot eliminate these threats, players must constantly remain alert and adjust their movements to avoid collisions. Even a single enemy can become a significant obstacle if encountered in a narrow section of the level. Another element that encourages replayability is the presence of multiple endings. Depending on how players perform throughout the game—particularly in terms of candy collection and progression—the final outcome of the story can change. This feature motivates players to replay the game in order to achieve different endings and explore alternate conclusions to Candyboy’s adventure. While the branching outcomes are relatively simple, they add a small sense of discovery that extends the life of the game beyond a single playthrough. Visually, Candyboy strongly embraces retro aesthetics. The game uses colorful pixel art that evokes the appearance of classic 8-bit console games. Characters, enemies, and environments are designed with bold outlines and vibrant colors that create a playful atmosphere. The levels feature nighttime settings, spooky decorations, and Halloween-themed elements that reinforce the seasonal setting of the adventure. Although the graphics remain intentionally simple, they successfully capture the nostalgic charm associated with early platform games. The soundtrack complements this retro presentation through the use of energetic chiptune music. The electronic melodies match the pace of the gameplay and help maintain the arcade-like atmosphere that the game strives to evoke. Sound effects are similarly minimalist, providing clear audio feedback for jumps, candy collection, and enemy interactions without overwhelming the experience. Together, the music and sound design contribute to the overall nostalgic tone of the game. One of the most appealing aspects of Candyboy is its accessibility. The game’s mechanics are easy to understand, allowing players to start playing almost immediately without lengthy tutorials or complex systems. This straightforward design makes the game suitable for quick play sessions and casual gaming moments. Players can jump into the experience, complete a level or two, and enjoy a brief challenge without needing to commit to a long gaming session. However, the game’s simplicity also highlights one of its biggest limitations. Candyboy is a relatively short experience, with only a handful of levels that can be completed in a short amount of time. While the difficulty and multiple endings encourage some replay value, the overall amount of content remains fairly limited. Players who are accustomed to longer platforming adventures may find themselves reaching the end of the game sooner than expected. Another limitation is the lack of mechanical variety. Because the game focuses primarily on running and jumping while avoiding enemies, the gameplay can feel somewhat repetitive over time. Additional mechanics such as power-ups, environmental interactions, or more varied level designs might have added greater depth to the experience. Despite these shortcomings, Candyboy succeeds in achieving what it sets out to do: deliver a charming and nostalgic platforming experience inspired by classic arcade games. Its pacifist gameplay concept provides a small but interesting twist on traditional platform mechanics, and the Halloween setting gives the game a playful identity that helps it stand out among small indie titles. Overall, Candyboy is a short but enjoyable tribute to the platformers of the past. Its retro visuals, simple controls, and challenging enemy avoidance mechanics capture the spirit of early gaming while adding a lighthearted seasonal theme. Although its limited content prevents it from becoming a large or deeply complex platforming adventure, the game still provides a fun and nostalgic experience for players who appreciate classic arcade-style gameplay.
